CNN —A man has died from an Ebola-like disease named Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) after being bitten by a tick in Spain. The 74-year-old died of organ failure on Saturday in an isolation unit at the La Paz-Carlos III Hospital in the Spanish capital, Madrid, a spokesperson for the hospital told CNN on Monday. Spain has developed a national plan to deal with tick-borne diseases, including CCHF, but people should take action to avoid tick bites, Lorenzo-Morales said. Consuelo Giménez Pardo, a lecturer in medical parasitology at the University of Alcalá in Madrid, told CNN that “there will undoubtedly be more cases” of CCHF in Spain. “I expect that we will see more cases in the coming years,” Thomson told CNN on Monday.

Bats are believed to be one of the carriers of Nipah virus, a zoonotic disease that spreads from animals to humans. Health authorities in the southern Indian state of Kerala are on high alert following the latest flare-up of the deadly Nipah virus. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said Tuesday that the close relatives of the teenager had tested negative for the virus, according to local media reports. The Nipah virus, which partly inspired the fictional "MEV-1" virus in the 2011 Hollywood film "Contagion," is considered one of the most dangerous pathogens circulating in the wild. The Nipah virus is transmitted to humans from animals such as fruit bats or pigs.

Children walking near stagnant wastewater on their way to a food distribution point in Deir al Balah, in central Gaza, last week. The large number of people treated for war injuries — almost 90,000, Gaza’s health ministry says — and the surge in illness have overwhelmed Gaza’s diminished medical system. The Israeli military has launched two operations at Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, fighting deadly battles with militants there. Before the war, Gaza’s health care system was “reasonably well functional,” said Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, the W.H.O.’s representative to Gaza and the West Bank. Now, fewer than half of its facilities remain even partly operational, he said, and its health care work force is severely depleted.

Suleiman’s denial is part of a policy recently communicated to medical missions going into Gaza through Israel. Before the war, Palestinian medics and medics of Palestinian heritage who held other passports could apply to Israel for entry into Gaza and have no issues getting approval. Ambulances lined up in front of the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing during a visit of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 23. “We reiterate that we STRONGLY advice (sic) against any attempt of entering Gaza with a Palestinian background/roots,” the email stated. The ad disclosed that “applicants with a Palestinian ID or Palestinian roots are not allowed into Gaza.” The post has since been deleted.

The pandemic signified a “historic backslide,” according to Dr. Katherine O’Brien, director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biological at WHO. WHO and UNICEF’s 2023 immunization coverage report, released Sunday, is the world’s largest dataset on immunization trends for vaccinations against 14 diseases. It analyzed estimates from 185 countries and used a third dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) vaccine — which is recommended for 1-year-olds — as the global marker for immunization coverage. The 2023 report also found HPV vaccine coverage in girls increased 7%, returning to near pre-pandemic levels. Analyzing immunization coverage in other areas of conflict is “a mixed picture,” O’Brien said.

Counterfeit Ozempic Is on the Rise

Experts have grown increasingly concerned about fake versions of Ozempic and popular weight loss drugs. These copycats can look deceptively real, and may contain dangerous substances or entirely different drugs altogether. In June, the World Health Organization warned that fake batches of Ozempic were found in the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil. Also in June, Eli Lilly issued a letter expressing concern that counterfeit versions of its own drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound, were being sold online, through social media and at medical spas. Those who study the counterfeit drug market say these findings are alarming, but not all that surprising.

CNN —Dead seals are washing up along beaches in South Africa’s port city of Cape Town, a coastal management official told CNN Friday, amid an outbreak of rabies in the marine animals. Cape Town, home to dozens of beaches and a coastline extending over 300 kilometers (186 miles), harbors thousands of Cape fur seals, a seal species native to southern Africa. He urged calm however, saying it is normal to find carcasses of Cape fur seals along the shoreline. While “lots” of dead seals have washed ashore this week, many of them have died naturally, he said. Oelofse said there was yet to be a seal-to-human transmission of rabies in Cape Town and the city’s authorities were working to prevent it.

“Making It Work” is a series is about small-business owners striving to endure hard times. Over six months of weekly video calls, Ms. Schiro, 45, learned how to pare down her overloaded to-do lists. Making changes like adding a line to her email signature saying that she does not respond to messages sent after 6 p.m. seemed like “stupid stuff,” she said, but it took an outsider’s perspective to pinpoint these adjustments. “When you’re burned out, it’s hard to think of those things and implement them,” Ms. Schiro said. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted how and where people work, the World Health Organization recognized burnout.

A Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital on Monday highlighted the growing number of deadly attacks on medical facilities, vehicles and workers in the country this year. It adds to data from the World Health Organization and suggests that more Ukrainians may be on track to be killed in such attacks this year than last year. The organization also recorded 44 attacks on medical vehicles in that period. In all of 2023, the organization tallied 22 deaths and 117 injuries from 350 such attacks, and 45 more specifically on medical vehicles like ambulances. In all, the bombardment killed at least 38 people, including 27 in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, local officials said.
