He added, "Votes of union workers in the United States against tentative agreements tend to reflect the white-hot anger of union employees against their employers. Tentative agreements are their only chance for them to express their frustration with their employer and their anger at the way they have been treated." A BNSF spokesperson said it is planning to attend the formal national labor negotiations even as it has announced nine tentative union agreements, five of which have already been ratified. It also has tentative agreements with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), SMART-TD, SMART-TD-YDM (Yardmasters Department), the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, and Iron Ship Builders (IBB). To date, Norfolk Southern has reached tentative agreements with 10 of its 13 unions, covering approximately 67% of its craft workforce.

The fee turned up in September 2019, after Trump placed 25% tariffs on steel, and hasn't gone away since. Small-business owners have already been facing tariffs on billions of dollars of goods, most of them from China, implemented by Trump in 2018. So far, the tariffs in force under both White Houses have cost Americans $79 billion, the nonpartisan Tax Foundation estimated this summer. The nation's roughly 33 million small businesses employ nearly half the nation's workers and generate more than 43% of the gross domestic product, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates. "Whether we like it or not, Asia is the bike manufacturing hub of the world," said Zagata, who raised prices by between 18% and 22% after the Trump tariffs took hold.

Next week's presidential election could have a big impact on municipal bonds, according to Morgan Stanley. In that case, the federal tax exemption becomes worth more, said Dan Close, head of municipals at Nuveen. However, studies have shown a move of just a couple percentage points "doesn't really move the needle" for muni demand, Brandon said. The TCJA increased the AMT exemption and raised the income level at which the exemption would phase out. That's because banks and insurance companies in the U.S. own about a quarter of all outstanding muni bonds, he explained.

President Harris would probably put more pressure on Israel to reach a cease-fire and open up talks with the Palestinians. Ukrainians worry that a President Trump would force a quick and dirty peace deal favorable to Russia. They hope a President Harris would continue to support them on the battlefield. Under President Harris, that would probably mean continuity with the Biden administration policies that have become much more restrictive over time. Migrants from all over the world pass through Mexico to get to the U.S. border, and the United States can’t control the flow of migrants without Mexico’s assistance.

Comcast is thinking about separating or spinning off NBCUniversal's cable networks. NBCUniversal's cable networks aren't growing anymore. That vision never materialized, in part because the media world's attention shifted from traditional pay TV to streaming, which devalued cable networks. The small media company wants to be the vehicle for a cable network rollup, CNBC reported in 2022. But even if Starz doesn't achieve its vision of a cable network rollup, it's possible a private equity firm may have interest in harvesting a group of cable networks for cash.

In Apple's earnings report on Thursday, the company said it reached just under $25 billion in services revenue, an all-time high for the category, and 12% growth on an annual basis. Apple's services unit has become a critical part of Apple's appeal to investors over the past decade. After Thursday, Apple's services business alone, based on its most recent run rate, would land around 40th on the Fortune 500, topping Morgan Stanley and Johnson & Johnson.

As a former acting U.S. trade representative who also served on the National Security Council, I’ve engaged in international economic policymaking firsthand. Trump’s main economic idea is to indiscriminately impose tariffs on U.S. trading partners, but it is American importers, exporters and consumers who will pay the price. When Trump last levied tariffs, the EU, Canada, China and other trading partners imposed their own tariffs in retaliation. While President Joe Biden left most of Trump’s tariffs against China in place, he managed to negotiate agreements that led to the easing of many retaliatory measures. As president, Harris would lead an economy that helps everyone, not just those at the very top.

New York CNN —Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company’s Apple Intelligence AI tools would “supercharge” the iPhone 16 when he introduced the new device last month. Now the world is about to get its first glimpse of whether the promise of Apple’s artificial intelligence technology is also supercharging deflated iPhone sales. That means people who bought the iPhone 16 in the first month it was on sale didn’t have access to those AI features until just recently. That figure will include sales of earlier iPhone models that happened during the quarter, too, but could indicate that the iPhone 16 helped raise sales slightly. In the year-ago quarter, when the iPhone 15 launched, iPhone sales grew about 2.8% year-over-year.

Plagued by shrinking birth rates and a rapidly aging population, tens of thousands of Chinese kindergartens have scaled back operations, closed down entirely or pivoted industries to survive. One preschool in the eastern province of Zhejiang still operates as a daycare, but instead of serving children, they're now catering to senior citizens. Last year, Zhuang Yanfang, 56, repurposed her kindergarten in the city of Jinhua, Zhejiang, into a senior nursing center. Conversely, as preschools suffer, the senior care industry is thriving in China's aging population crisis. "China's aging will only intensify," said Harry Murphy Cruise, an economist at Moody's Analytics.

Rachel Reeves, UK chancellor of the exchequer, outside 11 Downing Street ahead of presenting her budget to parliament in London, UK, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — British businesses are smarting after Finance Minister Rachel Reeves' bumper tax-rising budget, with analysts warning that the measures could slow hiring and push up inflation. Under the new rules, employer NI will rise by 1.2 percentage points to 15% from April 2025, while the level at which employers start paying NI for workers will drop from £9,100 to £5,000. Rain Newton-Smith, chief executive of the Confederation of British Industry, a business interest group, described it as a "tough budget for business." That is because businesses could pass on the additional costs to consumers by increasing the price of their products.

The Bristol Myers Squibb research and development center at Cambridge Crossing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US, on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. Bristol Myers Squibb on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that blew past Wall Street's expectations thanks to its blockbuster blood thinner Eliquis and a portfolio of drugs it expects to deliver long-term growth. Bristol Myers previously said it expected sales to rise in the "upper end" of the low single-digit range. The results come as Bristol Myers moves to cut $1.5 billion in costs by 2025 and funnel that money into key drug brands and research and development programs. The move could prompt legal challenges, as a similar policy did in the first Trump administration. To pressure local law enforcement agencies to cooperate, the Trump team would cut off their access to Justice Department grants, the three sources said. After an appeals court sided with the Trump administration, the Democratic-controlled states appealed to the Supreme Court. And that legal maneuver, in essence, ran out the clock on the first Trump administration. Vitiello said a second Trump administration would also offer additional funding to state and local police departments that participate in the mass deportations.
