Read previewJodie Foster says she almost played Princess Leia in "Star Wars," but had to turn it down because of a scheduling conflict. The late Carrie Fisher made the role famous in George Lucas' classic space saga, which launched with "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" in 1977. However, the character could have looked different if Foster had chosen to take the role. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. "The Silence of the Lambs" star recalled her brush with "Star Wars" on Wednesday's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

Howard Weaver, a self-described “poor kid from a shabby neighborhood,” was 24 years old and terrified when he was assigned by the floundering Anchorage Daily News to expose a rapacious chapter of the Teamsters union that was corruptly profiting from Alaska’s oil pipeline boom. “Any way you sliced it,” he recalled, “the odds were against us, a mismatch of Goliathian proportions.”But Mr. Weaver was hungry. Hungry enough that after months of investigative reporting, he and his colleagues exposed “a complex maze of political, economic and social power,” which, they wrote, “challenges at times both mighty industry and state government itself.”Three weeks before The Daily News declared that it was on the brink of bankruptcy, the scrappy newspaper with a circulation of about 13,000 was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1976 for its reporting on Teamsters Local 959. It was the smallest paper and the first in Alaska to win the coveted medal.

I had my first child at age 38 and the second at 41. What I didn't anticipate, though, was that there are also many benefits to having children later in life. But somehow, we've been able to recognize each other as part of the same secret society of older parents. AdvertisementI also often find myself editing the way I talk around other, younger parents . Because although being an older parent can be a mixed bag, it's one I'm very grateful to have been handed.

For an incumbent president, primary races -- the state-by-state competitions that nominate a political party's official presidential candidate -- are normally a perfunctory affair. Pro-Biden Democrats' volunteer-focused effort, with just a $100,000 budget, will encourage primary voters to put Biden's name on the New Hampshire ballot. Lyndon B. Johnson, then the Democratic incumbent, shunned the New Hampshire primary in 1968 due to over-confidence, only to see an insurgent campaign from Minnesota, U.S. Biden write-in organizers have largely settled on asking voters to write in "Joe Biden," but believe that other names like "President Biden" and "President Biden and Vice President Harris" satisfy a state law that says to count the vote if the reasonable intent of the voter is clear. "They're gonna use this as a way to say, look, we are good Democrats and organized this to protect President Biden," Smith said.

According to Ad Age, in 2022 the Progressive Corporation spent more than $2 billion on advertising in the United States, pouring more money into the effort than McDonald’s, Toyota or Coca-Cola. (The insurance industry’s total annual media-ad spending is estimated to be just shy of $11 billion — more than was spent by all the top beer brands combined.) It is an interminable folk tale about buying insurance, propelled by the charisma, or connoted soothing attentiveness, or gently grating peskiness, or something, of Flo, its central character. Flo debuted in 2008, working the checkout of an eldritch white store uncannily devoid of shadows or edges. New York CNN —Friday morning in Las Vegas saw labor peace, and not a threatened strike along the Strip, as the Culinary union has reached its third tentative labor deal in three days with a casino operator. Since that peak, rents in Las Vegas have come down slightly, following national trends, and the typical rent in the city was $1,808 in September of this year. Overall, the city has about 150,000 hotel rooms, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. It also eliminated a lower tier of pay for many union members and gave bigger pay hikes to some part-time workers. And about 15,000 union members have been waging a series of set-duration on-and-off strikes against 65 hotels in Los Angeles and Orange counties in California since July 4.

When Tina Swedrup, its current co-owner, received his message, “I of course Googled him,” she says. “My motto was ‘keep it simple,’” says Zanini, who counts traditional Swedish rag rugs and the distinctively glazed mid-20th-century pottery by Berndt Friberg among his inspirations. In preparation for the process, Zanini had to handpick threads in 1,800 different hues. The resulting mélange creates the illusion that the stripes are rippling like the surface of a stream. “I thought, ‘It will never match the beauty [Måås-Fjetterström] created in her lifetime,’” says Zanini, whose rugs are available made to order from the company’s permanent collection.

By then, county officials were seeing the area’s fatal opioid overdose toll tick up. “We were grossly underprepared, like I think many places across the country were, for the opioid epidemic,” Stuby said. Like hundreds of U.S. communities, it's launched a drug court where people can avoid jail if they work on recovery. They can lead to an entry-level certificate for work in the field — a partial answer to a recovery workforce crunch. His research has shown that recovery support services — such as housing, community centers and peer coaching — can help.

Known as a passionate and provocative theater advocate who pushed for boundary-breaking works and for classics to be adventurously modernized, Brustein founded both the Yale Repertory Theatre and the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard. He was dean of the Yale School of Drama from 1966-1979 and during that time founded the Yale Repertory Theatre. “They'll have an unresolved experience.”After a painful, highly publicized dismissal from Yale, Brustein in 1979 switched to Harvard, where he taught English and founded the American Repertory Theatre in 1980. At both Yale Rep and A.R.T., Brustein told The Boston Globe in 2012, he embraced popular theater with a nationalistic streak: “We were trying to liberate American theater from its British overseers. The light, absurd comedy, which gently mocks the lavishness of other musicals, premiered in 1994 at the American Repertory Theatre and was close to making it to Broadway.

Amboseli National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its massive elephant population and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro. In those three, one can track mountain gorillas in Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Another park to consider is the Kidepo Valley National Park, with its sweeping plains and valleys overshadowed by the brooding Mount Morungole. WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - When the CEO gets a 40% raise, what do the workers deserve? UAW President Shawn Fain initially asked for a 40% increase in worker's pay over the next four years - a figure based off an approximately 40% increase in CEO pay at the companies over the last four years at a time of stable profits for two of the three automakers. CEO pay and benefits have skyrocketed in recent decades, but worker pay has not kept pace. As the strikes began last week, Biden echoed Fain, saying automakers should offer more of the share of their profits to workers. Attempts to address rising CEO pay in decades past have not had the intended effect, said Rosanna Landis Weaver, director of wage justice and CEO pay at As You Sow, a non-profit shareholder advocacy group.

All are members of the top 1000 by market cap universe, have outperformed on a year-to-date basis, and are classified as a growth stock based on Morgan Stanley's proprietary factor classification model. "In our view, the best way to express that in a portfolio is to hold a barbell of defensive growth (select growth stories and more traditional defensive sectors like Healthcare and Consumer Staples) with late-cycle cyclicals (Industrials and Energy)."
