Waymo robotaxis are now open to all users in San Francisco, expanding the self-driving ride-hailing service, which has been available in the city to a limited number of riders. In a blog post on Tuesday, Waymo said nearly 300,000 people have signed up for the service, called Waymo One, since the Alphabet-owned company opened its waitlist. As of February, the company had approximately 700 vehicles in the Waymo One fleet, including about 300 cars as part of its San Francisco service. The company said it has logged 3.8 million rider-only miles in San Francisco as of the end of March.

CNN —Waymo issued a recall for its 672 driverless cars to make them less likely to drive into telephone poles. The recall follows a May 21 accident in Phoenix, Arizona, in which a Waymo driverless car hit a telephone pole that was installed in the roadway in an alley. The vehicle was pulling over to pick up a passenger when it struck the pole at low speed, according to Waymo. While the car was severely damaged, no one was hurt, according to documents Waymo filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall applies only to the fleet of modified Jaguar I-Pace SUVs Waymo owns and operates itself.

CNN —The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating two autonomous driving companies following incidents in which the vehicles behaved erratically and sometimes disobeyed traffic safety rules or were involved in crashes. The investigations involve Waymo, the self-driving technology subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, as well as Zoox, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Amazon. In cases where the human driver was present, the Waymo vehicle’s autonomous driving system was shut off moments before a collision. NHTSA is also investigating self-driving vehicles operated by Zoox, the autonomous technology subsidiary of Amazon. In one case, a motorcyclist was slightly injured in the crashes, in the other a Zoox safety driver was hurt.

Ford Motor on Friday named the former chief financial officer of electric vehicle startup Lucid to replace its current CFO, who is being promoted to more closely oversee the company's ongoing turnaround plan. Tesla said on Friday that it's cutting the subscription price of its premium driver assistance system for customers in the U.S. Marketed as its Full Self-Driving, or FSD, package, Tesla customers will now pay $99 per month, down from $199 previously. "The FSD price will continue to rise as the software gets closer to full self-driving capability with regulatory approval," Musk wrote on Twitter, now known as X, on May 18, 2020. Despite its brand name, the company's FSD option today doesn't make Tesla vehicles autonomous or functional as robotaxis. Tesla didn't respond to a request for more information, including whether the price cut announced Friday is permanent or temporary.

Tesla is going to trial over a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the family of Walter Huang. The family alleges that flaws in Tesla's Autopilot system caused the 2018 crash that killed Huang. Waymo can now operate its Waymo One service in Los Angeles. AdvertisementWaymo is now approved to operate its driverless vehicles in Los Angeles and additional parts of the Bay Area. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed concern about Waymo vehicles blocking the roads when emergency vehicles are trying to pass, which has happened several times in San Francisco. Waymo vehicles have been filmed cutting off road access and blocking public transport and emergency vehicles. There are also a few incidents of Waymo vehicles injuring people.

Alphabet's Waymo robotaxi unit won approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to expand service to parts of Los Angeles and the Bay Area, according to a notice posted to the regulator's website on Friday. "Waymo may begin fared driverless passenger service operations in the specified areas of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Peninsula, effective today," the release said. In mid-February, Waymo initiated a voluntary recall filing notice with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, saying it would fix software issues.
