Advertisers love talking about AI, but they face a big problem: consumers are suspicious of the tech and don't want to be bombarded with messaging about it. This issue was on full display at the Olympics, where Google face-planted with an ad for its Gemini AI tool. To date, 575 companies have bought ads to market AI products in 2024, up from 186 in all of 2023. A study published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management in June found that describing a product as using AI lowers a customer’s intention to buy it. “Way before people even heard about AI, those movies shaped people’s perception of what robots that run by AI can do to humanity,” he said. …and a lack of transparencyAnother part of the equation influencing customers is the perceived risk around AI – particularly with how it handles users’ personal data. This lack of transparency is something that Gursoy warns has the potential to sour customers’ perceptions towards brands they may have already come to trust. “Rather than simply putting ’AI-powered’ or ’run by AI,’ telling people how this can help them will ease the consumer’s fears.”

Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, a Washington state Democrat, is expected to deliver opening remarks at the event, according to an advisory shared with CNN. Approximately 80 House Democrats and at least six Democratic senators are expected to skip Netanyahu’s speech on Wednesday, according to sources and public statements reviewed by CNN. Washington CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address Congress on Wednesday – seeking to shore up American support for his war in Gaza and redirect the attention of a nation that has been preoccupied for weeks by a stream of domestic political issues. Netanyahu’s address to Congress comes at a crucial crossroads for the war. Netanyahu, meanwhile, has accused the United States of “withholding weapons and ammunitions to Israel,” claims that American officials flatly rejected. After arriving in Washington earlier this week, Netanyahu met with some American relatives of hostages held by Hamas. Former President Donald Trump and Netanyahu will also meet Friday at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump announced Tuesday.

Sharks in Brazil test positive for cocaine, say scientists
  + stars: | 2024-07-23 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —Sharks living off the coast of Brazil have tested positive for cocaine, according to new research, the first time that the drug has been detected in free-ranging sharks. Cocaine levels were around three times higher in muscle tissue than liver tissue, according to the study, while female sharks had higher cocaine concentrations in muscle tissue compared to males. Cocaine consumption has risen massively around the world in recent decades, according to the study. Increased consumption and poor sewage treatment infrastructure has made for increased cocaine levels in the sea, say researchers. Hauser Davis said that it is “very likely” that crustaceans, fish and other animals that the sharks prey on are also contaminated with cocaine.

Boeing expects delayed suppliers to catch up on parts that have slowed production of its 787 jets to below a rate of five a month, as the U.S. planemaker works to restore output of two key commercial programs by the year's end. Earlier this year, Boeing lowered 787 output to allow "suppliers to catch up with us," a company executive told reporters during a June visit to its sprawling 777 widebody factory in Everett, Washington State. Boeing has said it would restore 737 output to around 38 by the year's end after production of its strongest-selling jet plummeted. Boeing halted deliveries of the 787 widebody jet for more than a year until August 2022 as the FAA investigated quality problems and manufacturing flaws. The planemaker, nevertheless, is eyeing higher Dreamliner production, after setting a target rate of 10 a month for the Dreamliner in the 2025-2026 timeframe at its 2022 investor day.

A dangerous heat wave, gusty winds and potential lightning strikes posed a critical fire risk for large parts of the Pacific Northwest on Sunday, as firefighters in Oregon battled wildfires that have burned over 400,000 acres in less than two weeks. About 1.7 million people in Oregon and Washington State were under red flag warnings, the highest National Weather Service alert for conditions that may result in extreme fire behavior. It is issued when warm temperatures, very low humidity and strong winds combine to produce a heightened risk. The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office said on social media on Saturday that the next 24 to 36 hours would be “extremely challenging.” It asked residents to take precautions to prevent sparking man-made fires.

Then on Jan. 5, about six minutes and 16,000 feet into a packed flight out of Portland, Oregon, a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9. The Federal Aviation Administration barred Boeing from increasing output of its Max planes and stepped up hands-on inspections at production plants. The 737 was dubbed "Baby Boeing" and went on to become the company's bestseller, helping to make Boeing the largest U.S. exporter. Pilots in those Boeing planes fought against a flight-control system, the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, that pushed the nose of the planes downward repeatedly. Boeing has said it aims to increase rates to about 50 Max planes a month in the next few years.
