North Korea fired multiple short range ballistic missiles into waters east of the Korean peninsula on September 12, Seoul's military reported, days after the nuclear-armed North marked a state anniversary. After North Korea fired several ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Thursday that he "strongly condemns" the move, adding that Tokyo has already "lodged a protest" with the Hermit Kingdom. Needless to say, the launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea is a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions," Kishida said. North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast towards the Sea of Japan Thursday morning local time, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. In a statement, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command also condemned the launch, calling on North Korea to "refrain from further unlawful and destabilizing acts."

Gold prices edged higher on Thursday, with traders focusing on the upcoming U.S. economic data that may offer further insights into an expected reduction in the Federal Reserve's interest rate next week. Gold prices edged higher on Thursday, with traders focusing on the upcoming U.S. economic data that may offer further insights into an expected reduction in the Federal Reserve's interest rate next week. Data on Wednesday showed that U.S. consumer prices rose marginally in August, but underlying inflation showed some stickiness, which could discourage the Federal Reserve from delivering a half-point interest rate cut next week. CPI data showed no major inflation spikes, which is supporting gold prices to hold above $2,500 and suggesting no immediate changes to Fed policy, Wong added. Palladium climbed 1.3% to $1,021.84, its highest since July 8, following comments on export regulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Following Donald Trump’s lead, Johnson has tied a six-month funding bill to the SAVE Act, which would overhaul voting laws to require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Democrats and some Republicans are pushing for a “clean” funding bill that would keep the government open until December, after the election. The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1 unless Republicans and Democrats strike a deal to extend funding. Because of their miniscule majority, House Republicans can only afford four GOP defections if all lawmakers vote. “I’m a firm NO on bankrupting the nation and a YES on election integrity,” Mills said.

SINGAPORE — Pope Francis arrived in Singapore on Wednesday from East Timor, on the final leg of an ambitious 12-day journey across Southeast Asia and Oceania. The pope will also hold private meetings with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and former Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Francis is only the second pope to visit Singapore, following a brief five-hour layover by the late John Paul II in 1986. On landing in Singapore, Francis was met by Edwin Tong, the Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and received flowers from local schoolchildren. Francis’ 12-day tour has also included stops in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Joe Wilson, R-S.C., was taken at the hospital Tuesday night and is receiving treatment after collapsing at an event in Washington, according to a congressional aide with knowledge of the situation. WASHINGTON — Despite mounting opposition from his own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed Tuesday to stay the course and put his government funding package on the House floor on Wednesday. His initial strategy to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month is expected to fail and deal House Republicans an embarrassing blow. Due to their paper-thin majority, Republicans can afford only a handful of GOP defections on the vote, and many more than that have publicly voiced their opposition. “I am in this to win this,” Johnson told reporters at his weekly news conference. Afterward, the speaker added: “We are going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together, and we’re going to move that through the process.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson’s strategy to tie a short-term government funding bill to a Donald Trump-backed proposal to overhaul voting laws was on life support Monday after a band of conservative rebels vowed to vote no on the package. Without a stopgap funding bill, money will run out and the federal government will shut down at the end of the month. Because of the GOP’s razor-thin majority, Johnson, R-La., can afford only four Republican defections if all members vote. Mills slammed Johnson's strategy as a “farce” and said it would do nothing to secure the southern border. Instead, they are pushing for a "clean CR" — short-term funding with nothing attached to it.

CNN —A Singaporean man has been ordered to repay more than 38 million Australian dollars ($25.7 million) after he lost big during a gambling spree at an Australian casino over the span of a few days. Queensland’s Supreme Court ruled Monday that Yew Choy Wong owed that amount to the Star Gold Coast, as well as the casino’s legal fees and interest. He had racked up losses of 47.3 million Australian dollars ($31.5 million) there between July 26 and August 2, 2018. Star Entertainment, which owns the Gold Coast casino, declined to comment on the case. The casino also paid Wong hundreds of thousands of dollars in goodwill payments following his complaints, the ruling said.

House Republicans have now settled on some lines of attack, which they'll highlight in politically charged GOP hearings and investigations into both Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. House GOP probesAfter spending much of the 118th Congress focused on investigating Biden, House Republicans are now shifting their focus to Democrats’ new presidential ticket. CNN —Authorities in Madrid have announced that they will revoke the operating licenses of e-scooter rental companies Lime, Dott and Tier – a move that will see rented e-scooters banished from the streets of the Spanish capital. Lime, Dott and Tier were the companies selected to offer e-scooter rental in Madrid, with permits granted for 2,000 scooters each. The council’s decision means “rental scooters will disappear from the city from October,” it said. A spokesman for Dott told CNN on Monday that the company had received an official notification from Madrid city hall on Thursday. Madrid is not the first city to take action against e-scooter rentals, which have become increasingly divisive.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

The long-awaited Google-DOJ showdown focuses on the $31 billion portion of Google’s ad business that matches website publishers with advertisers. “One monopoly is bad enough, but a trifecta of monopolies is what we have here,” said Wood, the DOJ attorney, referring to Google’s publisher ad server business, its advertising exchange AdX, and its advertiser ad network. Authorities have called for that group of businesses within Google — which is distinct from Google’s search or search ads business — to be broken up. Factoring in those other sources of competition drops Google’s share of the ad exchange market from 34% to 17%, said Dunn, Google’s attorney. Still, a breakup of Google’s ad tech business could potentially trigger a shakeup of the digital advertising industry and Google’s role within it.

The team then tracked the prices of the recommended stocks from the day the videos were posted up until June 21, 2024. The most profit that an investor could have generated from a single stock would have been Nvidia, which grew 63.08% in the period surveyed. If a person invested $1,000 in every stock recommended in the one video that got the most bets right, the gains would have amounted to $4,860. On the other hand, putting money into all the stocks recommended in the video that got most bets wrong would have led to a loss of $1,517.
