[1/2] SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) writers walk the picket line outside Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., July 25, 2023. Hollywood writers walked off the job in May, followed by actors in July. The motion picture and sound recording industries shed 17,000 jobs in August because of the strikes, according to U.S. government statistics. Writers and actors can apply for assistance from their unions, and some crew members are eligible for state unemployment benefits. In the meantime, stars including George Clooney, Dwayne Johnson and Meryl Streep have donated millions to Hollywood charities that assist industry workers.

New York CNN —The Writers Guild of America could be getting close to a deal to end a nearly five-month strike against Hollywood studios and streaming services. But filming of movies and shows would not be able to resume unless the union representing actors also reaches a deal. Many productions had halted even before SAG-AFTRA joined the WGA on strike July 14. But who appears on those shows should they return before the end of the actors strike is unclear. SAG-AFTRA members are prohibited by union rules from promoting their films and shows while on strike.

ELLEN STUTZMANEllen Stutzman was the one sitting across the table from Lombardini in the failed negotiations that led to the writers strike. Stutzman, also an attorney, took over as chief negotiator for the Writers Guild on Feb. 28, just two weeks before contract talks began. She still has the title from her previous role: assistant executive director for the Writers Guild of America West. Drescher's less-known counterparts on the writers' side — technically two unions that unite for negotiations and strikes — are Michael Winship and Meredith Stiehm. Winship is president of the Writers Guild of America East and Stiehm president of its counterpart in the West.

Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) chief executive plans to double the Magic Kingdom’s investment in theme parks and other experiences to $60 billion over the course of about 10 years. On the other, Disney’s dwindling cash and the increasing demands for it is cause for concern. One issue is that Disney’s free cash flow has plummeted. No wonder adding theme parks to the list is making shareholders skittish.

Bill Maher arrives at the Vanity Fair Oscar party during the 94th Academy Awards in Beverly Hills, California, U.S., March 27, 2022. The WGA, on strike since early May, said they will resume talks on Wednesday. The WGA said it was "difficult to imagine" how Maher could host the show and still comply with strike rules. The proposed return of "The Drew Barrymore Show" to CBS drew picketers from the striking writers' and actors' unions as taping resumed last week. Following Barrymore, other popular talk shows, including "The Talk" and "The Jennifer Hudson Show" will not be returning during the WGA strike and the Screen Actors Guild strike.

New York CNN —Bill Maher has changed his mind and isn’t bringing back his HBO talk show amid the ongoing writer’s strike. “My decision to return to work was made when it seemed nothing was happening and there was no end in sight to this strike,” Maher wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. Last week, Maher said he would bring back his talk show, which ignited outrage from members of the WGA since his show employs a number of union members. Over the weekend, Drew Barrymore changed her mind about bringing back her talk show this week after she caught a slew of backlash from Hollywood. Unions have nowhere near the pull, or members, that they did decades ago, yet something has changed. Fain became president of United Auto Workers this year, but his time with the union began at that then-Chrysler plant in 1994. CNN —Drew Barrymore announced on Sunday that she will pause the premiere of her talk show after receiving backlash over her decision to resume production as more than 11,000 television and film writers remain on strike. Barrymore’s statement comes after a turbulent week for the actress and TV host, who faced criticism from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) after defending her decision to resume production without WGA writers amidst the ongoing dual strikes in Hollywood. In its annual renumeration report, Stellantis reported CEO Carlos Tavares' 2022 pay was 23.46 million euros. That's a nearly 77% increase over then Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley's 2019 pay of 13.28 million euros.
