Trump also had a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The phone call on Thursday marks the first time the pair are known to have spoken since Trump won the election. AdvertisementWhen approached for comment, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign told Reuters that they "do not comment on private calls between President Trump and other world leaders." Zelenskyy told ABC News that he thought Trump's proposal was a "beautiful" notion but was not grounded on "real-life experience." "Every time he comes to our country, he walks away with $60 billion," Trump said at the rally.

Their findings, set out in a study published last month, suggest it’s a mix of human-caused climate change and the region’s unusual geology. Graphic shows the process by which warming temperatures and the region's unique geography can lead to explosive craters, according to new research. Vladimir Pushkare/Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration/AFP/Getty ImagesWhat most scientists do agree on, however, is that climate change is playing a role, and may lead to an increase in these explosive craters in the future. As climate change accelerates, he added, it may lead to more permafrost degradation, powerful gas blowouts and new craters. Not only are the craters affected by climate change, they also contribute to it.

Democrats are, meanwhile, coming to terms with the massive fallout of their failure to stop Trump’s return to power, even as they dissolve into self-recrimination. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that about 11,000 North Korean soldiers are in the region, where Ukraine’s three-month military incursion into Russian territory has stalled. The New York Times reported Sunday that some 50,000 Russia and North Korean troops are set to take part in the assault. Reports that North Korea was sending troops to Russia began appearing last month, though both countries dismissed the allegations at the time. Russia and North Korea, both pariahs in the West, have forged increasingly friendly ties since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. South Korea’s military said North Korea disrupted GPS signals from border areas for the second-straight day on Saturday, affecting an unspecified number of flights and vessel operations. While warning aircraft and vessels near western border areas, South Korea’s military did not specify how North Korea was interfering with GPS signals or detail the extent of disruptions. North Korea’s GPS signal disruptions and balloon campaigns highlight the vulnerability of South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, its main transportation gateway, analyst Sukjoon Yoon recently wrote on the North Korea-focused 38 North website. He said that in 2024, North Korean trash balloons halted the airport’s runway operations 12 different times for a total of 265 minutes. South Korean officials say North Korean activities to disrupt GPS signals from western border regions increased as the country began launching trash-carrying balloons toward the South in late May, which the North described as a retaliation against South Korean civilian activists flying anti-North Korean propaganda leaflets across the border.

To be clear: Trump does not inherit a world at peace, where America’s unquestioning role as a beacon of freedom and moral superiority has brought enduring calm. Yet Tehran now has experience of Trump as someone willing to be wildly incautious and unafraid of international norms. As President Joe Biden - who did all he could to avoid war with Iran - leaves power, Iran looks incredibly weak. But in the current moment we are at in the war, Ukraine is equally in need of time to regroup and rearm. Does Putin risk Trump taking greater personal offense if that same deal is later betrayed, and their entente exposed as a sham?

In President-elect Trump, these ascendant insurgents across the pond see a key ally, someone who shares their mix of authoritarianism, populism and extreme hostility to immigration. “We have big plans for the future!” posted Hungary’s Prime Minister Vikor Orbán, an influential Trump friend and ally, calling it “a much needed victory for the World!”Orban visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida earlier this year. The AfD is an anti-immigration, anti-Muslim political party that is being monitored by the country’s domestic intelligence agency for suspected extremism — something it denies. Argentina’s far right, libertarian president, Javier Milei, told Trump he could “count on Argentina to carry out your task.” And Israel’s ultranationalist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir reacted with a “Yesssss.”

Yet Durham found that no senior FBI or CIA officials had committed crimes. Former intelligence officials disagree on whether Trump would seek to use the spy agencies against domestic political opponents, and if he did, how the intelligence workforce and courts would respond. Presidents face few legal constraints when it comes to their authority over the intelligence agencies, legal experts and former senior officials said. Supporters of Trump say dire warnings about the future of the intelligence agencies under a new Trump administration are hysterical and overblown, and that his record at the White House shows that he strengthened the spy agencies. “And the other is the risk that the intelligence agencies will be directed to do things that are either unlawful or inappropriate.”

Trump has praised the leaders of many of these nations, especially Hungary’s far-right prime minister Viktor Orbán. Those angles include attacking journalists, discrediting their reporting, applying pressure on media owners to induce self-censorship, launching legal challenges, and leveraging wealthy allies to buy up media outlets to turn them into government mouthpieces. Those outlets were then centralized into the powerful media conglomerate, the Central European Press and Media Foundation (KESMA). That hub now controls roughly 500 outlets, Wójcik said, “consolidating the majority of pro-government media under a single entity.”The few remaining independent media outlets that continue to operate in the country “face challenges, including legal obstacles and broadcast license denials,” Wójcik said. Kamenchuk also expressed optimism that the “levers and limits” on the executive branch enshrined in US law will work to protect the free press.

Hong Kong CNN —No United States leader has handled relations with North Korea quite like Donald Trump. There should be no enduring mystery about what a Trump presidency means for Ukraine. Trump has said he would end the war “in 24 hours,” but not how. Trump may appoint a cabinet that mildly adjusts the pace or tone of his instincts, but in the end he wants out. New York CNN —Press freedom groups sounded the alarm Wednesday on the potential dangers facing journalists under a second Trump administration, denouncing threats from the president-elect and his associates to undermine the news media. “On the campaign trail and during his previous administration, President-elect Donald Trump has frequently deployed violent language and threats against the media. His election to a second term in office marks a dangerous moment for American journalism and global press freedom,” Reporters Without Borders said. In the run-up to Election Day, Trump repeatedly threatened the Fourth Estate, often employing extreme and authoritarian rhetoric. In the wake of Tuesday’s election, press freedom advocates remain concerned about the longer-term implications of legal threats that journalists could face.

CNN —North Korean troops deployed to Russia’s Kursk region have fought Kyiv’s forces on the battlefield, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday, adding that the clashes resulted in fatalities. Zelensky said 11,000 North Korean soldiers are in the region, where Ukraine’s three-month military incursion into Russian territory has stalled. The New York Times reported earlier this week that a number of North Korean troops had been killed in a limited engagement with Russian and Ukrainian forces, citing senior US and Ukrainian officials. US officials had warned that around 10,000 North Korean troops are in the Kursk region and would be expected to enter combat against Ukraine. But Zelensky fears a greater role for North Korean troops if its allies fail to exert more pressure on Putin.
