Netflix is rolling in cash. What a turnaround!
  + stars: | 2024-10-17 | by ( Peter Kafka | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
Netflix makes money. Netflix is actually bringing in so much money that it is turning a profit, while its competitors struggle to break even. And Netflix financed all that cash incineration by taking on many billions of dollars in debt. In 2019, Netflix had negative cash flow of $3.3 billion. That doesn't mean Netflix is going to go hog-wild on spending now that its thesis has been borne out.

In 2022, President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS Act into law, which included $39 billion in manufacturing incentives for chip production in the US. Last year, TSMC announced that the official opening of its first Arizona fab would be pushed back from 2024 to 2025. We did hold onto our rate-sensitive names like Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley , which were among the best performers since the last Monthly Meeting. Morgan Stanley: 16.2% Following the Fed's decision, shares advanced as investors became more optimistic about a soft landing for the U.S. economy. Morgan Stanley benefits from lower rates — and, in turn, a better economy — because it can usher in more Wall Street dealmaking such as initial public offerings and mergers and acquisitions. That's because the Club has been debating exiting Morgan Stanley altogether for a potentially better investment banking rebound play like Goldman Sachs. Morgan Stanley reiterated its buy-equivalent rating on Oct. 10, arguing that Eaton has a positive setup into earnings season.

Airbus to cut up to 2,500 jobs in defense and space

A logo sits on display outside the Airbus wing assembly factory in Broughton, U.K.Airbus announced plans on Wednesday to cut up to 2,500 jobs in its Defence and Space division, citing a "complex business environment" especially in loss-making satellites. It has been hit by 1.5 billion euros ($1.63 billion) of charges in space systems in recent quarters, led by the high-tech OneSat project, and delays and rising costs in defense. The job cuts, first reported by French news agency AFP, come on top of a more than year-long efficiency review in the defense and space business, code-named ATOM. Airbus has been drawing up specific turnaround plans for its struggling Space Systems business without waiting for the outcome of recent satellite consolidation talks that include Italy's Leonardo as well as France's Thales. Group CEO Guillaume Faury said earlier this year that Airbus was looking at opportunities to create scale in defense, space and particularly satellites where traditional players have been heavily disrupted by the success of new constellations.

Walgreens said Tuesday it plans to close 1,200 stores over the next three years as it seeks to further downsize its footprint amid flagging sales and changing consumer behavior. Walgreens announced the closures as part of its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year earnings, which beat Wall Street's expectations. In June, Walgreens said it planned to close a “significant” number of its underperforming stores by 2027. Both Walgreens and rival CVS are facing a difficult operating environment, fighting to be profitable as consumers shift their habits. In 2021, CVS said it would close about 900 stores, or about 10% of its U.S. locations, from 2022 to 2024.

Walgreens to close 1,200 stores in the US over the next three years. AdvertisementUS pharmacy giant Walgreens announced Tuesday that it will close 1,200 stores across the US over the next three years as part of its turnaround effort; 500 locations will close next year. CEO Tim Wentworth told analysts on the firm's quarterly earnings call in June that "changes are imminent" for the 25% of Walgreens stores that were underperforming. The news of 1,200 closures came as the firm announced its fourth-quarter and full-year results for fiscal 2024, reporting a $3 billion loss during the quarter. Along with closing unprofitable stores, the pharmacy chain is also dialing back investments in its primary care clinics — VillageMD — as part of its plan to cut costs.

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni apologized Monday for gesturing and jawing at fans in the final moments of a win during which restless fans booed a listless performance and “Fire Nick!” chants permeated pockets at Lincoln Financial Field. Sirianni — a habitual trash-talker — put a finger to his right ear and chirped at fans in the first rows at the Linc on Sunday. The fourth-year coach added the Eagles “don’t necessarily like it” when fans boo at home games. Sirianni struck a conciliatory tone for his behavior a day later after his boorish behavior was ripped by fans and media. He earned a reprieve from Lurie — only to find himself swirling in controversy again for failing to keep his emotions in check against Eagles fans.
