The social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, says it is struggling with a flood of posts sharing graphic media, violent speech and hateful conduct about the Israel-Hamas war. But it has received a broadside of criticism, including from a top European Union official, questioning the adequacy of the response. One former member of Twitter’s public policy team said the company is having a harder time taking action on posts that violate its policies because there aren’t enough people to do that work. “X believes that, while difficult, it’s in the public’s interest to understand what’s happening in real time,” its statement said. “With the global crisis unfolding, Linda and her team must remain fully focused on X platform safety,” X told the organizers of the WSJ Tech Live conference being held next week in Laguna Beach, California.

The rampant spread is "a direct result of Musk's policies," a misinformation expert told Insider. "The fact that people with verified accounts can monetize their content means they have the wrong incentive," he said. "They're incentivized to spread content that's going to get engagement, clicks, and ultimately make them money. Even if you keep saying don't trust verified accounts, it's still difficult for people to navigate that landscape." Van der Linden said although misinformation was also present on Twitter before Musk's time, the platform used to have better resources to tackle it.

Elon Musk recently laid off more Twitter employees working on the platform's trust and safety efforts, roles typically crucial to keeping a social media platform safe for advertisers. While this layoff only affected a handful of people, five to 10, it was focused entirely on workers in trust and safety. Such workers are responsible for overseeing daily communications on Twitter, and mitigating the appearance and spread of toxic content, mainly so businesses feel comfortable advertising on the platform. As Musk courts controversy , conspiracy , and antisemitism , the advertising business on Twitter, renamed X, has plummeted by more than half and usage has waned . By mid-November, Twitter's trust and safety team had no engineers and no agents, as Insider reported, leaving the team mainly in the hands of people who did administrative work.

The timing of the campaign targeting me and my alleged bias suggested the attacks were part of a well-planned strategy. But the success of a strategy aimed at forcing social media companies to reconsider their choices may not require demonstrating actual wrongdoing. What happened to me was part of a calculated effort to make Twitter reluctant to moderate Mr. Trump in the future and to dissuade other companies from taking similar steps. of Twitter, overruled Trust and Safety’s recommendation that Mr. Trump’s account should be banned because of several tweets, including one that attacked Vice President Mike Pence. So Twitter only disclosed the campaign over a year later, without fingering the Indian government as the perpetrator.

Among those attending the in-person event will be the CEOs of Anthropic, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Palantir and X, the company formerly known as Twitter. But crucially, the event could also shed light on the political feasibility of a broad, sweeping AI law, setting expectations for what Congress may achieve. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna will also seek to “demystify” a widely held impression that AI development is done only by a handful of companies like OpenAI or Google, Padilla said. Some authors have sued OpenAI over those claims, while others have asked in an open letter to be paid by AI companies. New AI legislation could also serve as a potential backstop to voluntary commitments that some AI companies made to the Biden administration earlier this year to ensure their AI models undergo outside testing before they are released to the public.

Elon Musk’s social media platform formerly known as Twitter has sued the state of California over a law requiring social media companies to publish their policies for removing offending material such as hate speech, misinformation and harassment. The first-of-its-kind legislation was signed into law a year ago by California Gov. The California law requires social media platforms to post their content moderation policies — which they already do — and twice a year submit a report to the state on how they address hate speech, racism, misinformation, foreign political interference and other issues. The company formed the council in 2016 to address hate speech, harassment, child exploitation, suicide, self-harm and other problems on the platform. The law's author, Democratic Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, said it is a "a pure transparency measure that simply requires companies to be upfront about if and how they are moderating content.

REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 29 (Reuters) - X, the social media company formerly known as Twitter, said Tuesday it would now allow political advertising in the U.S. from candidates and political parties and expand its safety and elections team ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Before billionaire Elon Musk acquired the company in October, Twitter had banned all political ads globally since 2019. The move to allow all political ads in the U.S. could help X grow its revenue at a time when many advertisers have fled or reduced spending on the platform for fear of appearing next to inappropriate content. The company said it would create a global advertising transparency center, which would let users see what political ads were being promoted on X, and added it would continue to prohibit political ads that spread false information or seek to undermine public confidence in an election.
