Royal Caribbean is set to release its quarterly results on Tuesday, followed by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ' report on Wednesday. That means the cruise lines may have more room to grow, she said. "The wider that gap, the better the opportunity for the cruise lines to have upside," Farley said in an interview with CNBC. However, Scholes said his research shows that out of the three major cruise lines, the Carnival brand is facing the most pricing competition from private cruise operator, MSC. I was on board Qatar Airways' first flight featuring Elon Musk's Starlink internet. AdvertisementQatar Airways launched its first flight featuring Elon Musk's Starlink WiFi on Tuesday — and Business Insider was invited to the event. I was flying in the QSuite business class for this media event, but Starlink WiFi is free for passengers in every cabin. By contrast, the Starlink WiFi was as high as 215 megabits — faster than most home internet speeds. Crucially, there's almost no downtime as Starlink operates gate-to-gate, while standard inflight WiFi is only activated at cruising altitude.

A report from travel news site Skift shows that seven major airlines have retreated from the country in the past four months. Longer flights require more fuel, which make flights more expensive. "Indeed U.S. carriers are making hard but very commercial decisions to drop Chinese services and redeploy the aircraft elsewhere," he said. China airlines' struggleLow demand has also plagued domestic airlines in China. Collectively, Chinese airlines have increased capacity to Europe, compared to pre-pandemic, even though the market and trade flows were much stronger then, said Grant.

Traversed centuries ago by camel-back traders, two long-lost medieval cities that once thrived along the ancient Silk Road have been uncovered by drones sent searching for their secrets. This groundbreaking research in southeastern Uzbekistan could shift our understanding of the Silk Road, a vast network of trade routes that spanned from China to the Mediterranean. But the new research shows the Silk Road network was larger than previously predicted. Although many large urban centers have been discovered in Central Asia, the vast majority of archaeologically documented cities are in lowland riparian settings. The research indicates the two cities produced iron or steel to sell, as well as providing fuel for Silk Road travelers, with the region being surrounded by dense juniper forests.

The U.S. Transportation Department announced a $50 million fine Wednesday against American Airlines over allegations it mistreated passengers with disabilities, which the department said in some cases caused injuries. “They repeatedly failed to provide prompt wheelchair assistance, and they damaged thousands of passengers’ wheelchairs, which left passengers without the device they need to live their life fully,” he said. American Airlines may not be alone in violations of laws that protect travelers with disabilities. Buttigieg said there are investigations into other airlines, although he said that “American Airlines appear to be one of the worst offenders.”“The problems that we have uncovered in our investigation are not confined to one airline,” Buttigieg said. American said last year that it transported more than 146,000 wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

The biggest travel trend of 2022 was to go big, spend big — with people eagerly booking bucket list-style trips to places like Bali, Rome, London and Paris. But two new reports show travelers are now in a very different headspace. Trend reports from Expedia and Booking.com show vacationers are forgoing splashy trips to global hot spots in favor of quieter trips to places that are lesser-known — and far less crowded. Some 63% of travelers said they are likely to visit an off-the-beaten-track destination on their next trip, according to Expedia's "Unpack '25," a travel trend report which surveyed 25,000 respondents from 19 countries. They want to move away and find equivalent destinations that haven't been discovered by that many people."

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures sat near flat Thursday night after the blue-chip average finished the preceding session at a record closing level. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures were rose 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively. Those moves come after a rally in Travelers propelled the Dow to finish Thursday at an all-time closing high. Spain's tourism is still booming, with record numbers of international visitors. A travel industry expert said mass protests are unlikely on their own to deter travelers. AdvertisementProtesters in Spain staged massive demonstrations against overtourism this year that made headlines worldwide — especially after spraying tourists in Barcelona with water guns. The tourism protests intensified in April when an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 people in the Canary Islands demanded tourism limits be enacted. The protests, however, could impact government policy in a way that may help curb or better manage tourism in the future, Eylon said.

Visitors walk on the Sannenzaka slope in Kyoto, Japan, on Sunday, June, 26, 2022. Visitor spending in Japan broke an annual record in just nine months, official data showed on Wednesday, demonstrating the economic power of a tourism boom fueled by the weak yen. Travelers spent 5.86 trillion yen ($39.27 billion) through September, preliminary figures from the Japan National Tourism Organization showed. That eclipsed the 5.3 trillion yen spent in all of 2023, a record for any 12-month period. Tourism spending, classified as an export in national accounts, is poised to become Japan's second-biggest export sector after autos and ahead of electronic components.
