On Tuesday, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer dropped out of the speaker race. Two representatives publicly said they wouldn't vote for him given his vote on gay marriage. In 2022, Emmer was one of 39 Republicans to support the Respect for Marriage Act. He dropped out of the race before the day even ended, with two GOP members saying he wasn't fit for the job due to his previous support for a federal gay marriage bill. Rep. Rick Allen, a Republican from Georgia, told reporters on Tuesday that he was "very concerned" about Emmer's same-sex marriage vote and would not be voting for him.

President Zuzana Caputova appointed Fico and his cabinet after his SMER-SSD party won the Sept. 30 election and formed a coalition with the centre-left HLAS and nationalist SNS parties. Fico quit as prime minister in 2018 amid mass public protests against corruption after a journalist was murdered. Both Ukraine and migration may be among topics at an EU summit on Thursday and Friday that Fico will attend.

CNN —Private colleges and universities in Florida must now comply with a rule requiring students and faculty to use bathroom and changing facilities aligned with their sex assigned at birth. LGBTQ advocates have slammed the statutes as an effort to erase them from Florida schools and society. “Right now, in the public schools at least, the unisex restroom is the teacher’s restroom. So we have a situation whereby all the nonbinary and transgender (people) and the teachers all line up for this unisex bathroom. The rule does not yet apply to Florida’s state universities like University of Florida, Florida State University and University of Central Florida.
