What Is CrowdStrike?
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( Claire Moses | More About Claire Moses | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Until Friday morning, many people had either not heard of — or were not thinking about — CrowdStrike. But as flights were canceled, broadcasters went off air, trains did not run and medical procedures were delayed around the world, its name quickly spread around the internet. CrowdStrike, which was founded in 2011, is a cloud-based cybersecurity platform whose software is used by scores of industries around the world to protect against hackers and outside breaches. “Once CrowdStrike is installed, it actively scans for threats on your machine without having to manually run virus scans,” according to an explanation on the University of Denver’s website, which offers the platform to students and staff. Cybersecurity software like CrowdStrike’s has broad privileges to run across a computer system, including into sensitive areas.

We consider economic growth and job growth. We measure the breadth of each state's economy by looking at how many major corporations are headquartered there. Delaware's economy turned in a lackluster performance in 2023 — the only state economy to shrink last year. Mario Tama | Getty ImagesThe Grand Canyon State's surging chip sector is delivering many dividends, including strong job growth and a healthy housing market. But he noted that construction employment grew at a healthy pace last year, evidence that the state economy still has steam left.

Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

When the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, one of its first actions was to bar women and girls from participating in sports publicly. Female athletes in Afghanistan today face similar threats from the Taliban, including physical abuse and raids on their homes. The most recent example is the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow a team representing Afghanistan in the Paris Games. It should let the athletes — most of whom live in exile — compete on the Refugee Olympic Team, which would send a message of hope to refugees around the world. But none of the three women representing Afghanistan — in athletics and cycling — live and train in the country, nor could they visit without risking their lives.

Amtrak Passengers Face Record Delays From Extreme Weather
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Minho Kim | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Later that afternoon, after the temperature peaked at 96 degrees in Newark, Amtrak lost electricity near the New Jersey side of the Hudson River tunnels. The power failure soon shuttered a 150-mile stretch of the busiest rail corridor in the United States for more than three hours. The impact reverberated until the next day, when trains chugged through with hours of residual delays. As the planet rapidly warms, train delays and breakdowns are becoming more frequent as America’s antiquated rail infrastructure struggles to remain functional during prolonged extreme weather events that were not typical when the system was constructed. A New York Times analysis of Amtrak data found that the rail service’s passengers have faced record delays in recent years caused by inclement weather such as heat waves, storms, floods, high winds, low temperatures, tornadoes, lightning and wildfires.

Tokyo CNN —One in 10 young people in Japan – the vast majority women – have been groped on trains and in other public places, a government survey has found, highlighting an often unreported crime that has long plagued the country despite official efforts to fight it. Women accounted for nearly 90% of those who said they were assaulted, according to the survey released this month. “For some reason, I cry more now when I remember it than when it happened,” they told the survey. But some survey respondents urged authorities to do more. “We need to continue to educate people that molestation is a serious crime,” a Japanese government spokesperson told CNN, adding that public groping should always be reported.

The retired legal executive holds three British records in the over-85s category: a mile (8:10.40), 1,500 meters (7:38.41), and 3,000 meters (16:34.42). The NATO official said they had observed “an unprecedented escalation and spread of Russia’s hybrid warfare” over the past six months, which included “physical sabotage” on the supply line of NATO weapons intended for Ukraine. “It is everything from point of production and origin, to storage, to those who are making decisions, to the actual delivery,” the senior NATO official said. Recent high-profile arrests have revealed the ad-hoc, clumsy nature of how the Kremlin’s intelligence operations have evolved since the start of the war in Ukraine. Russia is big enough to have resources to fight a war against Ukraine and also maintain its security operations against European countries… against us. There are people who take part in the war against Ukraine, and then they are rotated to some other region or area.

A string of whistleblowers this year has raised allegations about Boeing factory lapses, including an official federal complaint from a current employee that Boeing hid potentially defective parts from Federal Aviation Administration inspectors, and that some of those parts likely ended up in planes. Most of the parts that were meant to be scrapped were often painted red to signify they were unsuitable for assembly lines, Meyers said. In a statement to CNN, Boeing did not dispute Meyers’ allegations. Meyers describes a pressure-packed environment at the Everett factory, where assembly teams competed with each other to find the parts they needed. Read previewOne day in January 2022, it hit me: I had outgrown my life in Japan. My first few years in Japan were exciting and dreamy, what many would expect when they imagine living in Japan. I visited stunning shrines and temples, sipped oolong-hai cocktails with friends in izakayas, spent hours exploring the streets of Shibuya — back then, Japan felt like my playground. Of course, I'm still new to the Netherlands, and I know my feelings may change with time — as they did in Japan. For now, I've decided that living in the Netherlands is what my dream life looks like.
