Sterling misses out on England selection again
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Martyn Herman | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling was again left out by England manager Gareth Southgate as he named his squad for the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Sterling, who has earned 82 caps for his country and was once a key part of Southgate's forward line, has now missed five successive England squads. Despite Southgate saying the door remains open, time is clearly running out for Sterling to force his way back into the reckoning for the Euro 2024 finals. Manchester City's John Stones misses out because of injury while Chelsea's Reece James is also not included despite recently returning from a lengthy injury lay-off. "I'm super excited about the tournament, we're really gearing towards the next tournament and I think everybody in international football is always living from tournament to tournament.

LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Endless VAR stoppages during Tottenham Hotspur's chaotic 4-1 home defeat by Chelsea on Monday left watching England manager Gareth Southgate bored, he said on Thursday. Southgate was in the stadium and was as bemused as some of the fans at times when lengthy VAR decisions were being made. "Now the flip side of that is I think all the decisions were right in the end. Time taken to make VAR decisions, especially offside incidents, has become a frustration for fans. Manchester United's Marcus Rashford was sent off away to FC Copenhagen on Wednesday, after a VAR check, and Southgate said it was the right call.

Instead, four years on from its Premier League debut, the technology has now seemingly become the main talking point rather than the football itself. Chelsea's win over Tottenham involved a number of huge VAR decisions. Henry Nicholls/AFP/Getty ImagesBeing magnanimous about refereeing decisions isn’t a trait many Premier League managers seemingly possess. “The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better,” the statement read. Whatever the Premier League and PGMOL had in mind for VAR’s development, it surely wasn’t this.

Reviewing refereeing decisions has come a long – and increasingly unloved – way from the VAR (video assistant referee) project first trialed by FIFA in 2016. Two days earlier, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta lashed out at “an absolute disgrace” to allow Newcastle a decisive goal after a triple-layered VAR review. “Significant human error,” the league officials' group acknowledged after Tottenham's 2-1 win that is still title-chasing Liverpool's only loss in the league. Former Australia coach Postecoglou said he is traditional and prefers soccer without VAR, where all accept occasional mistakes and respect the referee. “You can’t tell me referees are in control of games,” Postecoglou said Monday.

CNN —Five goals, as many overturned or disallowed, two red cards, and 21 minutes of stoppage time: those are just some of the numbers behind what was a wild and chaotic English Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Spurs battled hard and deployed a seven-man high line in defense, which appeared to perplex Chelsea until Raheem Sterling got in behind and teed up Jackson to make it 2-1. The best striker in Tottenham history looked up last weekend, 60 yards from goal with the ball at his feet, and liked what he saw. The goalkeeper was far off his line—it was an invitation to shoot. So Harry Kane launched an effort that traveled half the length of the field, looped over the keeper, and instantly in as one of the goals of the season. It was the kind of inspiration that had dazzled Tottenham fans for a decade. The trouble was that Tottenham’s greatest forward no longer plays for Tottenham—Kane was making long-distance magic these days for Bayern Munich.

Newcastle won 3-0 at Old Trafford and Howe was pleased to see a heavily rotated starting lineup repay his faith in them. CNN —England captain Harry Kane has settled into life in the Bundesliga with aplomb and, on Saturday, the forward scored a sensational goal from inside his own half during Bayern Munich’s dismantling of Darmstadt 98, echoing the exploits of former England captain David Beckham nearly 30 years ago. “I just saw the keeper out the corner of my eye in a strange position,” he told Sky Sports afterwards. Bayern Munich won 8-0. Tom Weller/dpa/APThe goal also contributed to Kane’s hat trick on Saturday as Bayern Munich defeated Darmstadt 98 8-0 following an extraordinary game which contained three red cards in the first half – one for Bayern and two for Darmstadt – and eight goals in the second half. Since joining the German club after a 19-year stint at Tottenham Hotspur, Kane has scored 14 goals in 13 games and is currently the second-most prolific goalscorer in the Bundesliga after Serhou Guirassy.

Man Utd show signs of life, but City offer real test

Another not-too-convincing victory at bottom club Sheffield United last weekend was admirable in its own way following the news of club great Bobby Charlton's death before kickoff. City suffered consecutive league defeats before the international break but have answered any doubts with wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and then at Young Boys on Wednesday in the Champions League. Guardiola will need no reminding that City lost at Old Trafford last year, having crushed United 6-3 at home. City also won the FA Cup final against United on their way to matching the Reds' treble of 1999.
