The American plane maker has been under intense pressure since early January, when a panel blew off a brand-new Alaska Airlines 737 Max midflight. Photos You Should See View All 60 ImagesTHE CRASHESThe bulk of criticism and investigations swirling around Boeing today center on the company's Max jets. Boeing agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle a Justice Department investigation, admitting that employees misled regulators about the safety of the 737 Max. Last year, Boeing reported a problem with fittings on Max jets where the fuselage meets the vertical section of the tail. Also under investigation is what prompted the emergency landing in Wichita, Kansas, of a Denver-bound United Airlines flight in December.

Tire makers are at the mercy of of raw material prices. And about half of customers are largely indifferent to the brand of tires they buy. But industry analysts say EVs provide tire makers with the biggest growth opportunity they have seen in decades. AlixPartners estimates that tires on EVs require 20 percent more frequent replacement and can cost 50 percent more.

Why EVs are causing a tire boom
  + stars: | 2024-03-19 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
With their heavy weight and quick acceleration, EVs tend to burn through tires about 20% faster than internal combustion vehicles do, according to AlixPartners. Other technical challenges include dampening tire noise, which is a lot more noticeable in the cabin of an otherwise silent EV, and improving an EV's range. Michelin research shows tire selection can impact an EV's range by 10% to 15%. Currently only about half of buyers do, according to Northcoast Research estimates. "If EV does kind of evolve and proliferate through the car population like some think, it may bring about what I call the gold rush for tire manufacturers," said John Healy, an analyst with Northcoast Research.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby on Monday sought to reassure customers about the carrier's safety after a series of flight problems in recent weeks. In another, a missing panel from the plane was discovered after the older Boeing 737 landed in Oregon on Friday. "Safety is our highest priority and is at the center of everything we do," Kirby said in an email to customers. "Unfortunately, in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety." The string of recent mishaps occurred during heightened scrutiny of the aviation industry after a door plug panel blew off of an Alaska Airlines ' nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9 on Jan. 5.

An engine fire sparked by plastic packaging wrap, a tire lost shortly after takeoff and a plane veering off the runway: These are among the eight incidents that have occurred over the past two weeks on flights operated by United Airlines. While no injuries — or worse — have been reported, the mishaps have generated headlines and stoked rising anxiety about aviation safety among federal officials and passengers alike. All of the incidents happened in the United States, and five involved airplanes made by Boeing, a manufacturer already under intense scrutiny. In January, a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner in mid-flight, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing. United, one of the world’s largest airlines, flies aircraft manufactured mainly by Boeing and Airbus.

Read previewFrom a missing panel to a tire falling off midair, United Airlines has experienced multiple high-profile safety incidents over the past few weeks. Instead, some aviation experts have pointed to a possible trend in United's maintenance safety systems. Regarding the missing panel, he said, "that smacks of a maintenance problem of United Airlines." Former Delta Air Lines chief pilot, Alan Price, noted safety redundancies in some events played out as they were designed to. Kirby said safety enhancements like an extra day of pilot training and a "centralized training curriculum" for new-hire mechanics, which were planned before the recent safety events, are actively being deployed.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti CNN —A container carrying essential items for newborn babies and their mothers – including resuscitators and other critical supplies – was looted in Port-au-Prince on Saturday, aid agency UNICEF said in a statement, as gang violence and a humanitarian crisis worsen in the Haitian capital. In addition to maternity and neonatal supplies, the looted container also held “early childhood development and education and water equipment,” UNICEF said. The theft of the supplies “occurs at a critical moment when children need them the most,” said UNICEF representative Bruno Maes in Haiti. Three out of four women and children in the Port-au-Prince area do not have access to basic public health and nutrition, according to UNICEF. Meanwhile, the first flights of a UN air bridge between Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic have been completed, UN sources told CNN.

CNN —A United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Mexico City was diverted to Los Angeles Friday after an issue with the plane’s hydraulic system, the airline said. It was the carrier’s fourth emergency in a week, including a tire falling off one flight and an engine catching fire on another. The Airbus 320, carrying 105 passengers and five crew members, landed safely and everyone disembarked at a gate, according to United and the Federal Aviation Administration. Customers were flown to Mexico City International Airport on a different aircraft, according to the airline. The Airbus 320 is equipped with three hydraulic systems for “redundancy purposes” and preliminary information showed the issue affected only one of those systems, according to United.

Whenever Dennis Wilson wants to take a drive in his new SUV, he has to set aside an extra 15 minutes. That’s about how long it takes to remove the car’s steering wheel club, undo four tire locks and lower a yellow bollard before backing out of his driveway. His Honda CR-V is also fitted with two alarm systems, a vehicle tracking device and, for good measure, four Apple AirTags. Its remote-access key fob rests in a Faraday bag, to jam illicit unlocking signals. As a final touch, he mounted two motion-sensitive floodlights on his house and aimed them at the driveway in his modest neighborhood in Toronto.

The Tesla Cybertruck is impressive and worrying

Cornish, a professor at Ohio State University who studies rubber alternatives, isn't the only one pouring energy into alternative crops like that desert shrub, guayule, or the rubber dandelions that bloom with yellow petals in the greenhouse where Cornish works. And in Nebraska and other parts of the central U.S., green grasses of sorghum spring up, waving with reddish clusters of grains. Instead, they're crops that many companies, philanthropic organizations and national and international entities tout as promising alternatives to fight climate change. Most rubber processing happens overseas, and the U.S. isn't prepared to process rubber domestically. That's why specialty markets will be critical if these crops have any hope of taking off here, Cornish said.
