BERLIN (AP) — Two cargo ships collided in the North Sea off the coast of Germany on Tuesday and one of them sank, German authorities said. The site of the collision was about 31 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of Langeoog island, which is just off the German mainland. Several rescue ships and aircraft taking part in the search hadn't located the missing crew members by late afternoon. The Verity was 91 meters (299 feet) long and 14 meters (46 feet) wide. The Polesie is 190 meters (623 feet) long and 29 meters (95 feet) wide.

After landing on the moon on December 11, 1972, NASA astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt collected rocks and dust from the lunar surface. A new analysis of that sample detected zircon crystals and dated them to 4.46 billion years old. “When the surface was molten like that, zircon crystals couldn’t form and survive. (AP) — Tropical Storm Ophelia was expected to make landfall on the North Carolina coast early Saturday morning with the potential for damaging winds and dangerous surges of water, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Ophelia was about 70 miles (115 kilometers) south of Cape Lookout, North Carolina, and heading north-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph) late Friday after spinning into tropical storm during the afternoon. A tropical storm warning was issued from Cape Fear, North Carolina, to Fenwick Island, Delaware. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland declared a state of emergency Friday as some schools closed early and several weekend events were canceled. The North Carolina Ferry System on Friday suspended service on all routes until conditions improve, officials said.

CNN —August began with a bright supermoon and will end the same way as another one lights up the night sky this week. ET, the bright glow of Saturn will appear about 5 degrees to the upper right of the moon. Over the course of the evening, Saturn will appear to move clockwise around the moon, according to NASA. The second full moon in one month is also known as a blue moon, like the phrase “once in a blue moon,” according to NASA. This results in a blue moon about every 2.5 years, and the last one occurred in August 2021.
