King Charles III shook hands and chatted with onlookers after attending an Easter service at Windsor Castle on Sunday in his most significant public outing since being diagnosed with cancer last month. "Keep going strong," one member of the crowd shouted as Charles and Queen Camilla walked by. The king has continued fulfilling his state duties, such as reviewing government papers and meeting with the prime minister. The service itself was smaller than usual as Kate, the Princess of Wales, is also being treated for cancer and has paused public duties. "He knows that being seen by the public and having public goodwill is really what's at the core of a successful monarchy,'' royal commentator Jennie Bond told the BBC.

Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?

It took a toilet paper shortage for some to come around to the 18th-century invention. A common reason why bidets aren’t used in the US is that during World War 2, American soldiers saw brothels utilizing bidets. Big Toilet PaperWhen the great toilet paper shortage hit in 2020, many Americans realized there could be another way to clean themselves. Using toilet paper had seemed, somehow, American, with toilet paper jokes a staple in bathroom humor and “TP-ing” a stereotypical rite of passage for teens. With the toilet paper mania, she decided to kill two birds with one stone and splurge on a Tushy.

CNN —Catherine, Princess of Wales, has revealed she has cancer and is undergoing preventative chemotherapy after weeks of speculation over her health and absence from the public eye. She has become all the more important to the British royals since Harry and Meghan quit as senior royals, Prince Andrew became engulfed in scandal, and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. It was there that she met Prince William, then the 19-year-old son of Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and Princess Diana. Around 1,900 guests attended the ceremony while the British public were granted an extra public holiday to mark the occasion. However, she apologized earlier this month after Kensington Palace released an edited photo the princess took to mark Mother’s Day.

This photo released by Kensington Palace shows Kate, Princess of Wales, with her children, Prince Louis, left, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. In a constitutional monarchy where kings and queens wield little actual, but plenty of soft power, visibility is everything. Perhaps the biggest clue: How on earth had William managed to capture all three children smiling at the same time? The palace meanwhile failing to issue a comment for long hours while the nation dove head first down the rabbit hole. More than 12 hours later, Kate finally responded: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she said on social media.

CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin is widely expected to sail to re-election in a nationwide vote that begins on March 15, securing a fifth term in office and a full third decade as Russia’s paramount leader. As Kremlin chairman, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin would become the country's leader temporarily if Putin were to die or be incarcerated while in office. In 2008, Putin reached the end of his second presidential term, and stepped aside for a handpicked placeholder, Dmitry Medvedev. Some Russian political observers speculate that the real competition to succeed Putin is not likely until the 2030s, when Putin reaches his sixth term. Even the former president Medvedev, who lost the number two slot in 2020 when he stepped down in a government shakeup, may still have aspirations.

LONDON (AP) — The first official photo of Kate, the Princess of Wales, since she underwent abdominal surgery nearly two months ago, was pulled from circulation by The Associated Press and several other news organizations because the image appeared to have been manipulated. Kensington Palace had issued the image Sunday as speculation swirled on social media about the whereabouts of the oft-photographed princess who hadn’t been seen in public since December. But efforts to tamp down rumors and supposition may have backfired after royal observers noticed inconsistencies in the photo's details. The story quickly became a top news story in Britain and the photo had almost 50 million views on the X social media platform by the end of the day. “At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image,” the AP said in its advisory.

Editor’s Note: This is a version of CNN’s Royal News, a weekly dispatch bringing you the inside track on Britain’s royal family. William, a source told CNN, had called the Greek royal family to let them know of his last-minute change of plans. Many saw the prince’s recent return to royal duties as a signal that the prognosis in the Wales household was improving quickly. If the role of monarchy is presence, continuity and unity, it was a stark visual seeing the royal family enter the chapel without several key senior faces among them. It’s worth emphasizing that the royal source told CNN that Kate “continues to be doing well” in her recovery.

Though the movie's ending takes some liberties from Herbert's book, it should leave audiences begging for a third movie. In the movie's thrilling conclusion, Paul drinks the Water of Life, which is supposed to bring death to any man who consumes it. Sure, they might stay together if Villeneuve gets to make "Dune 3," but it could be a while before that happens. AdvertisementIn late 2023, he said at a press conference in South Korea that the screenplay for the third movie, which would be based on Herbert's book "Dune Messiah," was "almost finished." Puccini’s “Turandot,” a verismo opera set in a fabled version of ancient China, makes for an odd love story. Its unlikable romantic leads go largely unfazed by the death and dismemberment they instigate; when they finally share true love’s kiss, they’re standing atop a figurative pile of corpses. On Wednesday at the Metropolitan Opera, the conductor Oksana Lyniv made a strong debut, emphasizing the murderous, life-or-death stakes instead of the fairy-tale Orientalism that has made it a cultural lightning rod in recent years. The reckoning around “Turandot” creates a problem for the Met, because the company’s long-running production, a lavish spectacle introduced by the director Franco Zeffirelli in 1987, is a hit. The gold-and-ecru throne room of Act II still dazzles, and eye-popping exoticism runs rampant, with acrobats, ribbon dancers, curled-roof pavilions and a dragon puppet.

The most surprising thing about the disclosure that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer after less than two years on the throne is the fact that it’s been disclosed at all. Cancer is common; candor about the British royal family’s health, not so much. Over the centuries, like many royal families, it has gone to great lengths to hide the condition of the sovereign’s body. Healthy king, healthy country. The idea of a physically disabled heir was unthinkable, especially in a country where the aristocracy defined itself by its military prowess.
