Antarctica was once a pristine preserve, but humans are ruining it. And this past winter, the frozen continent reached record-low sea ice levels. USGS"This region is nearing a threshold of rapid landscape change," researchers noted in 2017. Pauline Askin/ReutersAnd depending on the location, that ice melt could turn up some pretty nasty stuff. What's even more worrisome is that "human impacts are disproportionately concentrated on the most environmentally significant areas of Antarctica," the researchers noted.

Industry experts say even a small increase in crime can have massive, cascading effects that cause retailers to close stores. And stolen items can have an outsized impact on store profitability, considering the razor thin profit margins many large retailers typically operate at. “Increasing store crime is another variable in play right now for retailers,” said Zak Stambor, senior retail & ecommerce analyst with Insider Intelligence. Organized retail crimeAt issue is a particular type of store theft that loss prevention experts classify as “organized retail crime” or ORC. Last month, Dick’s Sporting Goods warned that retail theft was damaging its business and would lead to lower annual profits.

Cassidy Hutchinson said she was asked to make a "hit list" of the Republicans who voted to impeach Trump. Hutchinson said White House chief of staff Mark Meadows asked her to make a chart with their photos. Trump then kept the chart of the 10 House Republicans on the Resolute Desk. The main ingredient used in many popular over-the-counter cold and allergy medications doesn't actually work to get rid of nasal congestion, an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration declared Tuesday. The FDA typically follows the advice of its advisory committees but it is not required to do so. Pulling phenylephrine from the market could also affect retail pharmacy chains, which rake in revenue from selling over-the-counter cold and allergy pills. Retail stores in the U.S. sold 242 million bottles of drugs containing phenylephrine last year, up 30% from 2021, according to data compiled by FDA staff. Yet FDA staff, in briefing documents posted ahead of the meeting this week, concluded that oral formulations of phenylephrine don't work at standard or even higher doses.

A Food and Drug Administration panel said phenylephrine, a commonly used decongestant, doesn't work. Phenylephrine is found in dozens of over-the-counter cold medications to relieve sinus congestion. Phenylephrine versions — sometimes labeled "PE" on the packaging — make up the rest. Several other commonly purchased cold and congestion relief medications also contain phenylephrine, according to The Wall Street Journal. This time, the 16 members of the FDA panel unanimously agreed that current evidence doesn't show a benefit for the drug.

Every cold and flu season, millions of Americans reach for these products, some over decades. The decongestant is in at least 250 products that were worth nearly $1.8 billion in sales last year, according to an agency presentation. Among the products: Sudafed Sinus Congestion, Tylenol Cold & Flu Severe, NyQuil Severe Cold & Flu, Theraflu Severe Cold Relief, Mucinex Sinus Max and others. The ingredient has long been considered safe and effective under an old, outdated agency standard, and the F.D.A. The agency also may give the drug companies a grace period to swap ingredients in products, if required.

With retail investors holding individual stocks for less than a year on average, recent history suggests they could lose money, a Reuters analysis shows. Even institutional investors invited to buy into those 10 IPOs before trading would be down an average of 18%. "For almost all retail investors, buying and holding a low-cost index fund is the best strategy." Arm's debut and an upcoming listing from grocery delivery service Instacart are expected to rejuvenate a lackluster IPO market which has slowed over the past two years due to volatility and economic uncertainty. Instacart will be offering some retail investors a chance to buy into its IPO via underwriter fintech company SoFi, its prospectus said.

I use quotation marks, because merit aid is granted to half the students at public colleges and 84% at private colleges. Today the average merit-aid discount at private colleges is $23,000 — leaving the student to cover the remaining $30,000 or $40,000. At four-year public colleges, tuition now accounts for 52% of operational revenue, versus 48% from state funding. To make college more accessible, we need to make greater public investments — at both the state and federal levels — in higher education. James S. Murphy is a higher education policy analyst at Education Reform Now.

Ben Sasse told The New York Times that professors shouldn't feel stifled by a new Florida law. "You want to actually be teaching debates that allow people to get inside texts and wrestle," he said. Sasse, a former Nebraska senator, took over the reigns of the University of Florida earlier this year. In July, SB 266, which mandates that professors cannot "distort" historical events, became Florida law. "There's nothing that's going to keep a University of Florida professor from teaching that," he told the newspaper.

How Burmese pythons got from Asia to FloridaThe first definitive recording of a Burmese python in the Florida Everglades was in 1979. "Then I just developed this mantra over the years of don't underestimate the Burmese python," he said. Pythons have invaded the Florida Everglades and proven a formidable invasive species that may never be fully eradicated. While state-regulated programs have removed over 13,700 snakes from the Florida Everglades, they're usually the ones found near roads and canal levees. The biggest question researchers need to answer is how many Burmese pythons are actually in Florida at the moment.

Everything will change in 2026, when USF opens a $340 million, 35,000-seat stadium of its own on the eastern edge of the Tampa campus, university officials say. The University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of Miami, which is private, have all won multiple national championships. And UCF has an on-campus stadium known as the “Bounce House.” USF officials say it's a worthwhile investment for them as well. School officials estimate about $20.5 million in revenue will be generated the first year the on-campus stadium is in operation. “This is where the first drops of blood, sweat and tears for USF football were played.

The Classic Learning Test is the college admissions exam that most students have never heard of. An alternative to the SAT and ACT for only a small number of mostly religious colleges, the test is known for its emphasis on the Western canon, with a big dose of Christian thought. But on Friday, Florida’s public university system, which includes the University of Florida and Florida State University, is expected to become the first state system to approve the Classic Learning Test, or CLT, for use in admissions. “We are always seeking ways to improve,” said Ray Rodrigues, the chancellor of the State University System of Florida, noting that the system, which serves a quarter million undergraduates, was the largest in the country to still require an entrance exam. CNN —No matter who wins Tuesday’s US Open quarterfinals match between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, history will be made: For the first time, two Black men will face off in the match. It’s also the first time since 2008 that two Black men play each other at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tiafoe, 25, and Shelton, 20, will face each other at a stadium christened after the Black tennis legend who broke barriers in the game. He was also the first Black American to play on the United States Davis Cup team. Earlier this year, Shelton’s father resigned from coaching at the University of Florida to coach his son in professional tennis.

He did not play any of the significant junior grand slam events that have operated as springboards for many pros. Shelton went to the University of Florida, where the men’s tennis coach happened to be Bryan Shelton, who is well respected in tennis circles for emphasizing a mastery of the game over chasing victories. There was no grand plan to move Ben quickly up the tennis ranks. “You work on something, you work on something, you keep working on it, and then, six months later, you see that you can do it,” the younger Shelton told me this week. Then he began running roughshod in ATP Challenger tournaments, the tennis equivalent of Triple-A baseball.
