Election officials in pivotal battleground states including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona have all tried – and largely failed – to fact-check Musk in real time. Election officials say they are simply outmatched up against Musk’s followers and the X algorithm. “Election officials, they have a very hard job – their job is to be election officials not to be Tweeters,” said Renée DiResta, an expert in disinformation and an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Election officials in Pennsylvania are similarly attempting to fact-check Musk’s false claims on X but acknowledge those efforts are unlikely to stymie the spread of election lies. In Georgia, election officials see little point in trying to engage with Musk directly, instead turning to the method they relied on in 2020 to beat back misinformation: Regular press conferences with election officials rebutting the latest election falsehoods.

Because, look: In terms of negotiating your salary, the right time is yesterday. Asking for a raise is one of the single most important things a woman can do to increase her total earning power over the course of her career. There are many things to negotiate for that can have value for you, and your employer, as you develop your career. These things may be of more tangible value to you tomorrow than a salary bump is to you today, because they can increase your earning power in the long run. If I hit these metrics, what kind of career progression and raise should I expect to see?"

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's Llama 4 AI models are training on the biggest GPU cluster in the industry. During Meta's earnings call, he said the cluster is "bigger than 100,000 H100s." A lot of computing power is going into training Meta's forthcoming Llama 4 AI models — more than anything currently offered by the competition, according to Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg added in the earnings call Wednesday that Meta's Llama 4 models will have "new modalities, capabilities, stronger reasoning" and be "much faster." Meanwhile, Musk tweeted earlier this week that xAI will soon double its cluster size in the coming months to 200,000 H100 and H200 chips.

Expect the unexpected in Friday’s jobs report

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.

Never before had a team rallied to win the World Series after losing the first three games. These Yankees made history, but not the way they wanted – they are the only team to blow a five-run lead while facing elimination from the World Series. Then came something that’s always trouble: a little roller along first by a guy named Mookie in a World Series game in New York. The Mary Rose was one of the largest warships of the Tudor navy during King Henry VIII’s reign until it sank on July 19, 1545, during a battle against the French. The Mary Rose was one of them, and the flagship became the king’s favorite. The hull of the Mary Rose, supported by a steel cradle attached to a lifting frame, was raised on October 11, 1982. The research team used Raman spectroscopy, a nondestructive method that preserves valuable samples, to study the bones, Shankland said. “Investigating the impact of this on the spine would further our understanding of bone chemistry changes with age, but also with stress from activity.”

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., arrives for the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 25, 2024. Meta has been so quick to build out its massive data center and computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence projects that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is even a bit surprised. In a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta's third-quarter earnings report, Zuckerberg explained to investors how Meta's rising costs for the year are tied to the speed at which employees are able to get data centers, servers and chips for AI up and running. Meta raised the low end of its capital expenditures guidance for 2024 to $38 billion from $37 billion. "That execution makes me somewhat more optimistic that we're going to be able to keep on building this out at a good pace."

CNN —November is just a few days away, but Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji remains snowless, marking the latest date without a snowcap since records began 130 years ago. "We believe we are still in the early stages of the AI growth story," UBS equity strategist Sundeep Gantori wrote in a Monday note to clients, noting the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 as an inflection point for AI adoption. "The company should benefit from healthy user engagement, improving monetization of Reels, and longer-term monetization of Instagram and WhatsApp offer longer-term opportunities," UBS wrote. Moving forward, UBS sees a favorable risk/reward profile for the name, citing steady iPhone growth and strong growth in its services, among others, as catalysts. UBS thinks this early adopter of AI applications is still "well placed" to benefit from use cases that are relevant to the industry. "While we agree that rising competition will result in some subscriber churn, we expect Netflix to continue to report strong growth globally."
