This industry is defying America’s slowing job market
  + stars: | 2024-08-10 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Enter America’s top job creator: The mighty health care industry. Demand for health care workers remains red hot, according to recent government data on job openings. In June, the health care and social assistance industry had the highest seasonally adjusted job openings rate of any industry, at 7.6%, well above the total rate across the job market of 5.5% that month. That has translated into fatter paychecks for health care workers compared to the general private sector. “Virtually every nurse or health care tech in the country has a job,” Girard said.

CNN —Belarus sent military reinforcements to its border with Ukraine Saturday after it said several Ukrainian drones crossed its airspace and were intercepted by the country’s air defenses on Friday, Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin said in a statement. “We suspect these are attack drones,” Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko said during a separate briefing Saturday. Air defense, rocket defense and aviation forces and assets have been built-up,” Khrenin said. On Saturday, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry summoned the Charge d’Affaires of Ukraine and “lodged a strong protest” in connection with the incident, the ministry said in a post on X. Protesters rallied outside Bulgaria’s parliament on Thursday to denounce a controversial legal amendment adopted the day before that bans talk of LGBTQ and so-called nontraditional sexual choices in schools. The amendment bans the “promotion, popularization and support of ideas and opinions related to non-traditional sexual orientation or sexual identification other than biological” in schools. Protesters rally outside Bulgaria's parliament on Thursday in Sofia, Bulgaria. Bulgaria has also declined to ratify the Istanbul Convention on preventing violence against women, because of widespread belief it means to promote LGBTQ rights. European rights groups, like the Belgium-based Forbidden Colors, condemned the legislation as an assault on the fundamental rights of LGBTQ individuals, particularly children.

The decorated Kenyan runner hopes to change that in Paris over the coming days, entering the women’s marathon race as one of the favorites for the title. This will be Obiri’s fourth Games, making her a veteran in the women’s marathon field. Her introduction to marathon running, it’s fair to say, has been a learning curve. “When I go to the race, they [my coaches] told me that the marathon, it’s about being patient, waiting until the last minute,” said Obiri. Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa, the current world record holder, is also a strong contender for the gold medal.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign is disappearing — both on the trail and in the polls. Kennedy’s public poll numbers are dropping, from around 9% or 10% in national surveys before Biden dropped out, to about half that level now. The Kennedy campaign did not respond to questions for this article. The Kennedy and Trump campaigns have not commented or provided any details about whether Trump made Kennedy a specific offer. Kennedy posted a video on Aug. 2 announcing an endorsement from Russell Brand, the actor and comedian who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

CNN —Ukrainian forces are pushing further into the Kursk region of Russia, in a cross-border incursion that surprised even American officials, multiple US and Ukrainian officials tell CNN. Ukrainian forces are comprised of a mix of Ukrainian regular and special operations units, unlike previous Ukrainian operations inside Russia that often involved undercover units and local sympathizers. Russia claimed on Thursday to have halted a Ukrainian incursion into its territory, but later said that some battles are ongoing in the Kursk region. Neither the Ukrainian military nor the government in Kyiv has publicly commented on the operation. A Russian military blogger Rybar reported on Wednesday that the Ukrainian military had established control over a gas transit station near the border.

The federal court ruling that Google had abused its monopoly in online search threatens to disrupt one of the most valuable businesses in modern history, and Big Tech more broadly. Expect Google to fight back, which could drag this out for some time. What happened: Judge Amit Mehta of U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia sided with the Justice Department and several states that had accused Google of illegally cementing its search dominance. In large part that was by paying billions each year to companies including Apple and Samsung to make Google the default search engine on their devices. Those agreements hurt competition, Mehta found, allowing Google to trample competitors.

A federal U.S. judge ruled Monday that Google has illegally held a monopoly in two market areas: search and text advertising. The landmark case from the government, filed in 2020, alleged that Google has kept its share of the general search market by creating strong barriers to entry and a feedback loop that sustained its dominance. General search services, according to the court, applies to Google’s core search engine, where it traditionally competed with Yahoo. General search text advertising refers to the text ads that run alongside search results. However, the ruling found that general search advertising is not a market so there can be no monopoly control.

Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time. Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips. Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."

Prepare for a new high-volatility market regime
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( Katie Stockton | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +8 min
A spike in the VIX of this magnitude has not occurred since 2020, when the COVID-19 related decline in the S & P 500 was maturing. We believe another high-volatility regime is upon us, with the prolonged low-volatility regime that preceded it coming to an abrupt halt. If our long-term trend following measures were to deteriorate behind the S & P 500, we would be more inclined to reduce exposure. A rebound in the S & P 500 (i.e., a VIX pullback) can be used to hedge partial exposure from a top-down perspective. In its fiscal third-quarter earnings report to investors in late June, pharmacy chain Walgreens announced plans to close a "significant" number of its 8,600 U.S. stores. "Pharmacy chains used to really be the heart of communities," said GlobalData retail managing director Neil Saunders. Walgreens leans heavily on its back-of-store pharmacy revenue to make up for weakness in retail, an arena which itself has struggled with shrinking margins. "CVS has sized this at about a billion dollars a year, and CVS and Walgreens have kind of similar-sized pharmacies." Greg Abbott officially set the special election to replace the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, for Nov. 5, 2024, the same day as the general election. The special election will only determine who will serve out the rest of Jackson Lee’s term, through January. There will be no primary for the general election, since Jackson Lee won that in March. Edwards mounted a primary challenge against Jackson Lee earlier this year, which Jackson Lee won by over 20 percentage points in March. Any other candidates who wish to run in the special election must declare their candidacy by August 22, the governor's official proclamation said.
