(AP) — New Jersey's red-hot internet gambling market set another record in September with Atlantic City's casinos and their technical and online partners winning over $208 million. “The ongoing success of internet gaming helped push Atlantic City’s total gaming revenue to its highest figure for the month of September in over a decade,” said James Plousis, chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. “For the third consecutive month, total gaming revenue surpassed $500 million. Especially when you hear words like “tariffs.”But, given the economy’s central importance in the 2024 race, it’s worth hammering on an Econ 101 fact: Tariffs are a tax on Americans. Very simply: When the US government decides to put a tariff (read: tax) on, say, Chinese goods, the actual money going to the US Treasury comes from the American company doing the importing. “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff,” Trump said at one point. A storm system in the Atlantic could potentially strengthen into a tropical depression as it heads towards the Caribbean later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center — the latest storm in what is already an "above-normal" hurricane season. A tropical depression is a storm with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted an “above-normal” hurricane season this year, with eight to 13 hurricanes and 17 to 25 named storms. The 2024 hurricane season has already produced nine hurricanes, including four major hurricanes, and 13 named storms, NBC Miami reported. About seven weeks are still left in the 2024 hurricane season.

At least five deaths have been confirmed in St. Lucie County on the state’s Atlantic coast, where tornadoes touched down. CNN —Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday night, making landfall as a powerful Category 3 storm. The intense hurricane spawned tornadoes, dumped rain across much of the state, left millions without power and claimed at least 12 lives, including five people in St. Lucie County. Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year — which has only happened during five other hurricane seasons since 1871. Many areas in Florida are also recovering from the aftermath of a Milton-spurred torrent “supercharged” tornadoes, according to National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan. Milton was the fifth hurricane to make landfall in the United States this year, joining Category 1 Beryl, Category 1 Debby, Category 2 Francine and Category 4 Helene.

Hurricane Milton has exploded into a monster storm as it soaks up its natural fuel, warm water, in the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center had warned that Milton was likely to strengthen into a major hurricane, defined by minimum sustained winds of 111 mph, and its status was confirmed at 8 a.m. Monday. Up to 8 inches of rain was forecast, with storm surges of up to 15 feet possible for coastal cities, they said. The latest hurricane is a rare product of the southwest Gulf of Mexico, rather than the Caribbean or the Atlantic. Milton started as Tropical Depression 14, in the Gulf’s Bay of Campeche, sheltered behind the western coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.
