Questions about sexual orientation, gender identity and changes to queries about race and ethnicity are on track to be asked in the most comprehensive survey of American life by 2027, U.S. Census Bureau officials said Thursday. Under the revisions, questions about race and ethnicity that previously were asked separately will be combined into a single question. Questions in English and Spanish about sexual orientation and gender identity started being tested in August with trial questionnaires sent out to several hundred-thousand households. On the sexual orientation test question, respondents can provide a write-in response if they don’t see themselves in the gay or lesbian, straight or bisexual options. The trial questionnaire also is testing “degenderizing” questions about relationships in a household by changing options like “biological son or daughter” to “biological child.”

The recommendation coincides with a new report finding asymptomatic bird flu infection in some workers. Those cases were discovered using blood, or serology, testing and seem to have been transmitted from sick animals, not people. To date, 46 people have been diagnosed with bird flu, also known as H5N1, in the United States this year. Of those 115, eight (7%) had antibodies showing they’d been infected with the bird flu. Until now, workers who had a known exposure to bird flu but didn’t have symptoms haven’t been routinely tested.

Weeks after sticky black balls washed up on the famed beaches of Sydney, Australia, scientists say they have partly solved the mystery behind the “disgusting” blobs. Initially thought to be tar balls, the golf-ball-size debris turned out to be something much different — a combination of decomposed cooking oils, hair and food waste, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) said Wednesday. Balls collected for testing in a laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They said preliminary test results indicated that the blobs were tar balls formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water. Sydney Water confirmed there were no issues at the Bondi or Malabar water facilities, while Transport for NSW Maritime reviewed recent weather patterns but found no clear answers, according to the statement.

CNN —Residents in a small South Carolina town are finding themselves in the middle of a real-life game of Jumanji after 43 monkeys escaped Wednesday from a research facility. The rhesus macaque primates are all still on the loose after escaping from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemassee, town administrator Matthew Garnes said late Thursday morning. In an update shortly before noon, police said Alpha Genesis had eyes on the monkeys and were attempting to entice them with food. The young primates – all female and between 6 to 7 pounds – have never been used for testing and are too young to carry disease, police said. The Alpha Genesis test facility specializes in nonhuman primate research for the biomedical research community.

CNN —The mystery of the black balls that washed up on some of Sydney’s most iconic beaches last month has now been solved – and it’s more disgusting than you could ever imagine. Australian beachgoers were turned away from seven beaches last month after lifeguards spotted thousands of black spheres, prompting closures and clean-up efforts. People visit Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia after authorities closed it to the public on October 16, 2024, following the sighting of mysterious black balls on its shores. My friend and I budgeted $10,000 to launch a pickleball paddle company. Our product, pickleball paddles, would be more expensive to produce. Keeping our business money separate from our personal funds seemed like a smart bookkeeping move — and it made us feel more legit. We're working with a product sourcing company, 330 Trading, which helps eCommerce businesses connect with factories to manufacture their product. Between prototypes and a shipment of 20 of our final product paddles (seven of which went to USAP for testing), we've spent about $1,475.

A Ferrari logo is being installed on a Ferrari car at Ferrari's new 'e-building' facility where the luxury sportscar maker is testing lines before an expected start of car production in early 2025, in Maranello, Italy, June 21, 2024. Ferrari said on Tuesday its core earnings rose 7% in the third quarter, despite a slight decrease in car shipments, as the luxury sports car maker continued to benefit from a richer product offer and increased demand for personalization. Ferrari said in a statement it was now even more confident of hitting its full-year targets. A richer product offer, including stronger pricing power, brought a 60 million euro positive contribution to the quarterly result, the company said in a statement. Chief Executive Benedetto Vigna added the company enjoyed "exceptional order book visibility well into 2026."

Holger Leue/Getty ImagesEven though washing produce may not remove all pesticides, it's one of the best ways to reduce your exposure, de Montagnac said. But the pacing of season seven, which was released on Netflix in October, is just too slow.
