Daniel Ceng/Anadolu via Getty ImagesThis caught the hedge fund players by surprise: they had assumed EU sanctions were unlikely because of the depth of China-Europe trade, which reached $815 billion annually in 2023. The hedge fund "agreed that any room for avoiding a total divestment from China and the South China Sea was now completely lost, and market re-entry was probably many years away." The hedge fund responded by choosing to invest heavily in semiconductors manufactured in regions not affected by the war. "This would provide potential opportunities for new players to emerge in the Global South, particularly if loans can be collateralized," Knightsbridge noted.

At the end of [the] 1980s, Japanese companies accounted for like 51% of the global semiconductor market. So by doing this ... one thing undercut Japanese semiconductor chip makers' competitiveness in the global market. Another thing [is] that [it] forced open [the] Japanese semiconductor market to foreign players, and this creates opportunity for the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan. And Japanese companies are trying to both develop their own capacity but also attract phone companies to establish fabs there. So by collaborating with international companies, Japanese companies can leverage their existing technology and manufacturing techniques to expand their global share as well.

PARIS — Lighting the Olympic cauldron symbolically opened these Games — and, as much as possible, might have also taken a torch to some awful pandemic memories. The past two Games were staged in bubbles in and around Beijing and Tokyo as Covid was still a factor. And while some athletes have tested positive for Covid during the Paris Games, they have not upended competition. (NBC News is a division of NBCUniversal, which owns the U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2032.) French fans have been wildly cheering for their athletes and team throughout these Games — so much so, that even Americans have taken notice.

Taiwan competes at the Olympics as “Chinese Taipei” as the result of a political compromise – but not under its own name, flag or anthem. Reuters reported that its journalists saw the spectator shouting while being removed mid-match. The banner he was carrying was green, a color used by the island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, as well as those who advocate for Taiwanese independence and greater autonomy. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “strongly condemns the crude and despicable means of malicious individuals ruthlessly snatching the ‘Go Taiwan’ slogan.”“This violent act is not only uneducated, but also seriously violates the civilized spirit represented by the Olympic Games. It also violates the rule of law and infringes on freedom of speech,” the ministry said in a statement.

The second of the two female boxers whose gender identities have recently been scrutinized won her first fight at the Paris Olympics on Friday. Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan defeated Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan in the 57 kg round of 16 match by unanimous decision and advanced to the quarterfinals. Her victory follows Thursday’s win by Algeria’s Imane Khelif, whose gender identity has also come into question in recent days, prompting a social media firestorm. But he was surprised to learn last week that there was another person running for president then, and in 2024, who counted herself an Asian American: Kamala Harris. But Ms. Harris, whose mother emigrated from India and whose father emigrated from Jamaica, is less known as an Indian American and Asian American. Asked to name a famous Asian American, only 2 percent of Americans said Kamala Harris, according to a recent survey by The Asian American Foundation. Ms. Harris does not shy away from talking about her Indian heritage and Asian American identity.

China said Taiwanese workers in the mainland have nothing to fear if they "don't break the law." The comment comes as Beijing sparked alarm in June by floating the death penalty for 'diehard' separatists. About 163,000 Taiwanese worked in the mainland in 2021, per a local report, and the number is declining. The comment comes as Beijing issued legal guidelines on June 21 suggesting the death penalty or prison for "Taiwan independence diehards." The declaration sparked alarm in Taiwan, where officials started restricting tours to China and warning people against traveling to the mainland.
