That's from the nonprofit parent's 990 filing with the Internal Revenue Service, a form that has to be filled out by organizations wishing to maintain their tax-exempt status. Thad Calabrese, a professor of public and nonprofit financial management at New York University, said OpenAI's current status is confusing, and is unlike anything he has seen in the nonprofit world. He said OpenAI could give up its nonprofit status, and he cited the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, which in 1994 allowed associated nonprofit medical insurance plans to switch into for-profit entities. An OpenAI spokesperson didn't respond to a question about whether the organization is considering giving up its nonprofit status. Unlike OpenAI, Mozilla never raised money from venture and corporate investors, who expect returns on their investments.

Three weeks after OpenAI's board briefly pushed out CEO Sam Altman without providing a specific reason for its decision, former director Reid Hoffman says he's still puzzled by what took place and why. He stepped down from OpenAI's board in March and said he hasn't spoken with any of the board members, though he said he did communicate with Altman. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella offered to hire Altman, OpenAI president Greg Brockman and their colleagues in a new advanced AI research group. My favorite “Twilight Zone” episode is the one where aliens land and, in a sign of their peaceful intentions, give world leaders a book. Government cryptographers work to translate the alien language. They decipher the title — “To Serve Man” — and that’s reassuring, so interplanetary shuttles are set up. But as the cryptographers proceed, they realize — too late — that it’s a cookbook. It was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit to serve man, to keep an eye on galloping A.I.

Sam Altman said he was reluctant about returning to OpenAI, but that feeling was "not for long." He told The Verge he first had to get over his "ego and emotions" after being ousted as CEO. Altman said his immediate reaction was one of being "hurt and angry" and that "this sucks." Altman said the feeling was "not for long," though, and first he had to "get over the ego and emotions" to discuss the possibility of resuming his role. A failed coup at OpenAI saw Sam Altman return as CEO and stronger than ever. The botched coup of OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has seemingly reinforced his power. Even more astonishingly, Altman lacks the one obvious lever of power that keeps founder-CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg in power: controlling shares in his company. "He's really, really, really good at both being understood, but also understanding and asking thoughtful questions." They acted in their best interest," one OpenAI staffer posted on Blind, a social network site where employees can post anonymously.

Ilya Sutskever was nowhere to be found Tuesday night at the impromptu party OpenAI staff threw to celebrate the return of Sam Altman as CEO. Sutskever was directly involved in Altman's abrupt removal as CEO last Friday by OpenAI's board, of which Sutskever was a member. With Altman now back leading the company, a new smaller board in place, and additional members imminent, staff are unsure if Sutskever will return at all. Another person familiar with both men thinks it is possible Sutskever could return and mend fences, however unlikely. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and another co-founder who quit in solidarity with Altman, is less magnanimous, the person said.
