"There is an active shooter in Lewiston," Maine state police said previously on the social media platform X. The Sun Journal, citing a Lewiston police spokesperson, reported shootings at three separate businesses: the Sparetime Recreation bowling alley, Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant, and a Walmart distribution center. The number of annual homicides in the state has fluctuated between 16 and 29 since 2012, according to Maine State Police.

Representative Jared Golden of Maine, a centrist Democrat, called for a ban on assault weapons Thursday afternoon, reversing a long-held stance after 18 people were killed in a mass shooting in Lewiston. Mr. Golden, a Marine Corps veteran, has repeatedly broken with his party to oppose legislation that would ban assault weapons, a policy that Democrats have repeatedly tried and failed to revive in the nearly two decades since it lapsed. That position, Mr. Golden said on Thursday, reflected in part “a false confidence that our community was above this, and that we could be in full control, among many other misjudgments.”“The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure,” Mr. Golden said. Standing by him at a news conference, Senator Susan Collins, a centrist Republican, declined to back a ban on assault weapons. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, one of the most liberal lawmakers in the House, called Mr. Golden’s comments “powerful, brave and moving” on social media.

Gaetz, a far-right House Republican who viewed Speaker Kevin McCarthy as too willing to compromise with Democrats, started a process three weeks ago to unseat him. Not only did that effort work, but House Republicans emerged from their recent chaos yesterday to elect Mike Johnson as the new speaker. “Because now we have both a man and a plan.”Johnson had little national profile until he emerged as the leading candidate for speaker on Tuesday night. Unlike the three failed speaker candidates who came before him, Johnson has few enemies among House Republicans. His hallmark in Congress, our colleague Annie Karni wrote in a profile of Johnson, “has been combining his hard-line views with a gentle personal style.”

After 11 interest rate hikes, Federal Reserve officials appear divided on next steps. Jerome Powell and other central bankers have signaled another rate hike could be on the table. Since the Federal Open Market Committee's September meeting, several central bankers have signaled that interest rates could still go higher. Atlanta Fed President, Raphael Bostic, October 20: "I really do try to keep people focused on what inflation is, still at 3.7%. Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome Powell, October 19: "Financial conditions have tightened significantly in recent months, and longer-term bond yields have been an important driving factor in this tightening.

Elected officials in Maine reacting to initial reports of the shooting in Lewiston expressed concern about the violence that had visited their community and shared words of sympathy with the friends and relatives of those caught in the shooting. A spokesman for Senator Angus King said that President Biden had reached out to the senator and pledged any federal assistance needed for the state. Janet Mills of Maine said on X that she had been “briefed on the active shooter situation” and urged residents to follow the directions of law enforcement. President Biden was briefed “on what’s known so far about the mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, and will continue to receive updates,” the White House said in a statement. Emma Jones, a spokesperson for the Fed, declined to comment on why many Fed officials, who in the past moved swiftly to acknowledge the war in Ukraine, weren’t addressing the war in Israel. There are some Fed officials who are starting to talk about it, though — albeit only when asked questions. Fed officials see little immediate threat to the US economyAtlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic was the first to speak about the war, at the American Bankers Association’s annual conference last Tuesday. That’s probably why more Fed officials were quicker to acknowledge the war in Ukraine, Dorn said. “I don’t think the Fed wants to look like they’re taking sides,” Dorn added — but said Fed officials could easily talk about it without looking partial.

Asset manager BlackRock (BLK.N), health insurer UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N) and regional lender PNC Financial (PNC.N) are also slated to report earnings. After the data, the S&P 500 spent the morning zig-zagging between red and green. U.S. benchmark 10-year yields rose after the inflation data and rose further to hit a session high after the auction. The rise in yields particularly pressured rate-sensitive sectors such as utilities (.SPLRCU) and real estate (.SPLRCR), often viewed as bond proxies. Homebuilding stocks fell after the data and came under more pressure after the afternoon increase in bond yields. Traders now expect a stronger chance the Fed will end up delivering another interest-rate hike this year, and keep rates higher for longer next year.

Collins appeared to view higher borrowing costs as buying the Fed some space to take in incoming data. If the rise in yields persists, “it likely reduces the need for further monetary policy tightening in the near term,” Collins said. It showed progress on underlying price pressures but the overall reading rose by 3.7% versus a year ago, the same gain as August. “Today’s CPI release is a reminder that restoring price stability will take time,” and it remains a question whether inflation is moving sustainably on a path back to the target, the official said. Collins added that the core service prices stripped of housing factors have yet to make much progress toward lower levels.

For now, the consistent and - for equity investors - very welcome refrain from Fed officials that caution is warranted before further rate rises has drowned out any concerns about data. But just how quickly markets turned at the start of the week shows how quickly they could turn again. Despite the dovish trimmings, the core Fed message remains that rates will rise as far as they have to in order to rein in inflation. Fed regional bank heads Lorie Logan, Susan Collins and Raphael Bostic have the chance to air their views in remarks at separate events today. It's a big day for British data as well, with GDP and industrial production due first thing.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose trailblazing career embodied the rise of women in politics, the movement for gun safety and, finally, a determination to keep serving her California constituents despite illness and advancing age, has died. In the past two years, it was apparent Feinstein was having memory issues, and sometimes appeared befuddled on Capitol Hill. Tributes from lawmakers in both parties flowed Friday morning, as somber Senate lawmakers mourned the loss of their colleague. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat and House speaker emeritus, sat in the Senate gallery, listening to the tearful tributes with Feinstein's daughter, Katherine. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska Republican, lauded "the beauty of Dianne Feinstein" and chastised those who pressured Feinstein to step down, not appreciating the sacrifices the ailing California lawmaker made to serve her state.

"I expect rates may have to stay higher, and for longer, than previous projections had suggested," said Collins. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari are scheduled to make remarks later on Friday as the Fed's "blackout" period on post-meeting policy comments lifted. The central bank's decision to hold its benchmark overnight interest rate steady this week was unanimous. Collins does not currently have a vote on rate policy under a Fed system that rotates votes among the 12 reserve bank presidents year by year. New projections issued at the end of a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday showed 12 of 19 Fed officials expect one additional quarter point rate increase this year.

U.S. stock futures , , were slightly firmer ahead of the opening bell on Wall Street, signalling a pause after sharp losses on Thursday amid uncertainty over interest rates going into 2024. Benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields hit a 16-year high of 4.508%, later trading at 4.48%, while 30-year yields hit their highest in a dozen years. The Fed revised downwards its unemployment rate forecast for next year, and if the U.S. economic data continued to improve, it would put "upside risk" on interest rates, making the need for a soft landing all the greater, Osman added. Ten-year Japanese government bond futures rallied though cash yields were little changed and near decade highs at 0.745%. Gold firmed 0.3% to $1,925 an ounce despite pressure from the stronger dollar and bond yields.

Two Federal Reserve policymakers expressed support Friday for keeping interest rates elevated as the battle against too-high inflation continues. In separate speeches, Governor Michelle Bowman and Boston Fed President Susan Collins said there's still the possibility that the Fed will have to raise rates further if economic data doesn't cooperate. The commentary comes two days after the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee decided not to raise rates following its two-day meeting. While choosing not to raise rates, officials indicated they still see one more increase coming this year, then potentially two cuts in 2024, assuming moves of 0.25 percentage point at a time. "There are some promising signs that inflation is moderating and the economy rebalancing," Collins said.

On Sunday, Axios reported that the Senate won't be enforcing its dress code any longer. In response, 70-year-old Sen. Susan Collins joked that she'd wear a bikini on the Senate floor. She said the lack of a dress code "debases the institution." "I plan to wear a bikini tomorrow to the Senate floor and Chris Coons is gonna wear shorts because there's no dress code anymore," Collins said before adding that doing "away with the dress code, to me, debases the institution." GOP firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted on Sunday that she thought the change in dress code was made simply "to appease Fetterman," which she said "is disgraceful."

The Senate has relaxed its dress code, allowing senators to wear any attire in the chamber. Ted Cruz, who sometimes walks to votes in workout clothes, was less angry about the change than others. But he's not alone: Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is also known to wear workout clothes from time to time, especially around unexpected afternoon votes. "I plan to wear a bikini tomorrow to the Senate floor," Republican Sen. Susan Collins joked to reporters, saying the change "debases the institution." And on Twitter, Cruz has made light of the changes, assuring his followers that he will not be wearing a speedo on the Senate floor.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday that staff for the chamber’s Sergeant-at-Arms — the Senate's official clothes police — will no longer enforce a dress code on the Senate floor. “Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor.
