The word “homeless” may conjure up images of shelters and living outdoors. But for millions of Americans, homelessness means sharing a home with multiple families or sleeping on a couch. In this audio essay, the New York Times Magazine contributing writer Linda Villarosa shares her reporting on “doubling up” and makes the case for the government to expand the definition of homelessness. (A full transcript of this audio essay will be available within 24 hours of publication in the audio player above.)

But these days, you're more likely to find him training with booty bands than Thor's hammer, his personal trainer told Business Insider. Recently, Hemsworth has become a fan of so-called "booty bands," elastic resistance bands placed around the ankles or thighs to help fire up the glutes. "It's slowing things down a bit and really trying to focus on that muscle-mind connection as well," Zocchi said. Google cofounder Sergey Brin is facing a wrongful-death lawsuit stemming from a plane crash last year that killed two crew members en route to a private island in the South Pacific. The lawsuit also alleges that Brin intentionally delayed the recovery process. The suit identifies Brin, Google, and Bayshore Global Management — Brin's family office — as the "owner/operators" of the aircraft. While the lawsuit does mention various recovery efforts conducted by Brin's team, it alleges frequent and drawn-out delays. Olarte Maclean alleges that Brin's representatives cited weather conditions at the crash site and their interactions with the USCG as excuses.

This upcoming Mars simulator mission won’t require that you be astronaut-ready. During my monthslong space mission, I was able to put everything on autopay on my credit cards or through my credit union. But once you set your expectations about the limited space you’ll have and the protracted period of time you’ll be gone, you’ll probably be fine. Finally, in your year on board the Mars simulator, you will very likely miss some of the things that I missed most. As soon as the spacecraft hatch was opened after landing from my ISS mission, I smelled grass.

Mark Zuckerberg put out an Instagram video reviewing the Apple Vision Pro this week. AdvertisementHaving not personally tested both devices, I am not fully qualified to judge whether Mark Zuckerberg's video review accurately compares Apple's Vision Pro to the Meta Quest 3. Mark Zuckerberg has entered his Posting Era. I don't attempt to think too hard about Mark Zuckerberg's inner life, but I don't get the sense that what we're seeing is a window into his soul. What I see now is something I never thought might happen: Mark Zuckerberg is getting high on his own supply.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares rose in Asia on Thursday after Wall Street stocks recovered much of their sharp losses from a day before. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 climbed 1% to 5,000.62, clawing back more than two-thirds of its loss from Tuesday. It was the single strongest force lifting the S&P 500 index. Most companies in the S&P 500 have been topping analysts’ forecasts for the last three months of 2023. Hopes for stronger growth in 2024 from a solid economy have been another reason the S&P 500 has set 10 records already this year.

Surfing the web in the 1990s and early 2000s was a slower endeavor, and fewer people had access to the technology. Those robust online forums have since been flattened into algorithmic social media feeds or hidden on messaging apps, a shift mourned by several video games with a shared fondness for bygone internet eras. Games like last year’s Videoverse, 2019’s Hypnospace Outlaw and the upcoming Darkweb Streamer use chat interfaces akin to AIM or MSN, as well as fake websites that greet people with MIDI songs and text written in bold fonts. Each experience has its own nostalgic lens but is a snapshot of lost expression, creativity and independence. Chantal Ryan, an anthropologist and the lead developer of Darkweb Streamer, a horror simulation game that merges the perils of modern streaming with the ’90s internet, bemoaned how high-quality independent services were often cannibalized by corporate interests.

Citadel's Impact Fellows program connects new hires waiting out non-competes with non-profits. The voluntary program was piloted last year and is now embedded in the firm's recruiting process. "It gave me structure in my life," said one employee who had to wait 18 months to start his new job. Citadel and Citadel Securities — the $62 billion hedge fund and industry-leading market maker, respectively — are no strangers to new hires having to sit out lengthy non-competes. Hedge funds and trading shops are notorious for garden leaves that can stretch years, and many firms are willing to be patient for top talent.

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Clad in a yellow vest, little Efruz balances himself on the front of the surfboard as waves foam around him and his companion as they skim over the Pacific waters off Peru. Efruz is a 4-year-old Jack Russell terrier and he is a common sight these hot days of the Southern Hemisphere summer. “He loves the sea,” says his owner, Mauro Canella, a surfing instructor at the beach in San Bartolo, a district 50 kilometers (30 miles) from downtown Lima. And they are not the only dog-human duo surfing the waves off San Baartolo. As happens to all surfers, dog and owner occasionally are tumbled into the water when they fail to negotiate a wave.

Rechristened the Mardi Gras, the first Carnival cruise ship sailed out of Miami that March. Cruise ships like the Icon of the Seas will spend the majority of their trip at sea. Eight years later, cruise ships such as the Diamond Princess became early incubators for COVID-19. CNN —Surfing is about to experience a seismic change in 2024 as two of the standard-bearers of the sport are stepping away from the board and waves. Eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore is taking a break from competitive surfing – for a year, at least. Australian Gilmore, widely regarded as the greatest female surfer of all time, announced that she won’t be competing in the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour season, instead focusing on enjoying other things in life. Carissa Moore still plans to compete in Oahu and Tahiti for the Olympics before stepping away from the sport for good. Frank Heffernan thought his daughter Megan was in South Korea where she was working as an English teacher when he heard the news of a devastating terrorist attack on the Indonesian island of Bali on Oct. 12, 2002. She had gone there with friends on a vacation. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her,” said Mr. Heffernan, mopping his eyes with a tissue at his home in Florida. In the random, cruel fashion of terrorism, the bombing killed tourists and workers from 22 nations who happened to be in a commercial district, including 38 Indonesians. Among the dead were Australian and British citizens who were there for a rugby match, Americans passionate about surfing — and Megan and two Korean friends, who were out sightseeing when the bombs exploded.

Cable companies are trying to catch up with the times, though, and now want you to replace your clunky set-top cable boxes with sleek, Apple TV-like streaming devices – gadgets that could save customers money. Xumo is one step in cable companies’ broader strategy to combine live TV with streaming – essentially rebundling streaming services like the old cable bundle. Moving from a cable box to Xumo will save cable customers money. It’s a shift for cable companies that long relied on trying to get households to add as many set-top cable boxes in their homes as possible. It could be a while before the ancient cable box completely disappears, however.

It was the latest difficult episode for New York’s subway system, in many ways the backbone of the city, which has struggled in the early going of 2024. Already this year, there have been two train derailments, one of which injured 26 people and led to significant service disruptions for days. And last week, a teenage boy was killed in what authorities said was a “subway surfing” incident, in which thrill-seekers ride atop cars. Shootings on subway trains are rare and make up a fraction of the city’s overall gun crime. In November, two people were shot on a moving subway car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Pros: Mexico ranked first in InterNations’ 2023 Expat Insider survey and has ranked among the top five countries since 2014. Cons: As is the case in Mexico and other countries with large expat communities, there’s growing backlash against the influx of foreigners, especially Americans, and especially in Lisbon. That popularity among auslanders has contributed to a housing pinch in major cities, especially Berlin, where finding accommodation is one of the most stressful aspects of a move.
