General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co, BMW and Volkswagen's Audi unit also are producing EVs in Mexico, or plan to. "There are still a number of issues that need resolving in Mexico before there's a massive influx of electric cars," said Mario Hernandez, KPMG's lead manufacturing partner in Mexico. Hernandez said drawbacks included a lack of subsidies for buyers, high costs for installing charging devices at homes and a shortage of public charging stations, vital for longer journeys. Mexico has about 1,100 charging stations nationwide, mostly in the capital and other major cities, according to AMIA. Pedro Corral, director of operations for EV charging stations platform Evergo, drives his all-electric i3 BMW around Mexico City.
The new chargers appear to solve a common Supercharger complaint for non-Tesla EV owners: cable length. The electric-car maker said it plans to open the V4 Supercharger station to non-Tesla's "soon." On Wednesday, the electric-car maker announced it had opened its V4 Superchargers in Harderwijk in the Netherlands. Though, Bink told Insider he wasn't able to experience a faster charge rate because he had a 2018 model. Bink was one of several Tesla owners to take to social media to post pictures and videos of the new charging site.
The reliable and extensive Supercharger network used to be only for Tesla owners. Some Tesla owners worry the move could lead to long waits at charging stations. He believes the Tesla charging experience is so far ahead of the competition that non-Tesla owners will arrive in droves. Other Tesla owners Insider spoke with don't foresee major issues and cheer a move that could accelerate EV adoption. Experts said Tesla Superchargers could get more crowded, but there probably won't be major issues.
Ditching autism care for software

He raised $200 million to transform autism care. Now, he's ditching patients to sell healthcare software. Yury Yakubchyk, the cofounder and CEO of Elemy, raised more than $200 million to provide better autism therapy for kids. Instead of delivering care itself, instead of delivering care itself, the company wants to sell software to clinicians running their own businesses. It's all fake work," Rabois said.
Tesla opened up some of its exclusive Supercharging stations to rival electric vehicles. But the cords are designed for Teslas, meaning that owners of some other cars need to use two spaces. Early this month, Tesla opened a handful of its roughly 1,700 US charging stations to non-Tesla vehicles. (Tesla designed its own charging connector, while the rest of the industry uses a different standard.) Tesla owners sometimes experience long lines at charging stations, particularly during popular travel times.
Marques Brownlee took his Rivian R1T to a Supercharger that had just been opened to non-Teslas. He said non-Tesla EVs sometimes took up multiple parking spots due to their charging port locations. The YouTuber said the charging station makes his Rivian a better car, but cuts into Tesla's advantage. Youtuber Marques Brownlee took his Rivian R1T to a Tesla Supercharger in rural New York last week and he said on Twitter that the visit "descended into chaos" when other non-Tesla drivers showed up as well. The billionaire agreed to begin opening up some of the electric-car maker's Superchargers to non-Tesla owners earlier this year.
Explainer-Biden's EV highway takes shape

Reservations for its Ocean SUV rose in the fourth quarter. Fisker also said it had about 65,000 reservations for its Ocean SUV, up from 62,000 at the end of October. We're going to have a profit this year, which is very unusual for a startup EV company," CEO Henrik Fisker said on Fox Business on Monday. Referring to rival Tesla, Fisker told Fox Business the company run by Elon Musk has 7,000 chargers in the US. It's going to be super-easy for you to charge your Fisker Ocean," Fisker said.

Tesla Inc. has unnerved some of its customers with a decision to open up parts of its exclusive Supercharger network to other electric vehicles, with some fretting about future wait times to recharge their cars. John Sergeant, a Tesla owner in Seattle, said Superchargers in his city are already overrun with demand and that opening up the network to others will compound the problem.

Tesla already has a U.S. network of more than 17,700 fast chargers at over 1,650 locations. Tesla Inc. will open part of its proprietary Supercharger network to other kinds of vehicles for the first time, the White House said Wednesday. The move qualifies the company for a share of billions of federal dollars on offer to build a national network of electric-vehicle chargers. Tesla plans to open at least 3,500 new and existing 250 kilowatt chargers to drivers of all kinds of EVs by the end of next year, the White House said. Fast chargers can repower cars in about 30 minutes, but those available to any kind of EV are in short supply across U.S. highways, where their presence is considered key to boosting EV adoption as auto makers convert fleets to electric.
Feb 15 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday praised the plan by Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) Chief Executive Elon Musk to open part of its electric vehicle charging network, saying the move is a "big deal" and will "make a big difference." The tweet is a sign of improving relationships between Biden and Musk, who previously complained about being ignored. "In building our EV charging network, we have to ensure that as many chargers work for as many drivers as possible," Biden said in a tweet. "To that end, @elonmusk will open a big part of @Tesla's network up to all drivers. That's a big deal, and it'll make a big difference."
The White House seeks to give consumers unfettered access to a growing coast-to-coast network of EV charging stations, including Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) SuperChargers. KEVIN DEMPSEY, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE AMERICAN IRON AND STEEL INSTITUTE"The domestic steel industry is prepared to play a strong role in the expansion of our national EV charging infrastructure. "It was a surprise to us that they would require assembly immediately given that domestic manufacturing for high-power charging infrastructure is starting basically from scratch. BRENDAN JONES, PRESIDENT AT CHARGING STATION OPERATOR BLINK CHARGING"These rules are absolutely in line with Blink's expectations. EV MAKER FISKER"Fisker supports a strategy that allows all charging providers to expand the charging network across the US as fast as possible.
But to boost EV adoption, not all chargers need to be on highways, experts say. The goal is to put 500,000 public EV chargers on US roads by 2030, up from about 130,000 currently. EV chargers need to meet people where they're at. Studies suggest that a lack of reliable and functional EV charging is one of the biggest factors standing in the way of consumer EV adoption. Of note, however, is that a majority of EV charging can technically be done at home.
As part of this effort, White House officials said, they locked a commitment from Tesla to open thousands of its chargers to electric vehicles made by other manufacturers. Tesla has intended to open up its charging network in the US for years. But in one omission that will raise questions from staunch environmentalists, the new federally funded EV chargers will not necessarily be powered by clean energy sources. According to environmental impact research by Project Drawdown, compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, emissions drop by 50% when an electric vehicle's power is drawn from the conventional grid. During the briefing, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized that the President's goal is to get to a "fully clean electric grid" by 2035.
EV CHARGING COMPANIES: Many, including Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Electrify America, ChargePoint(CHPT.N) and EVGo (EVGO.O), will accelerate the rollout of chargers due to the federal funding. U.S. EV AUTO SECTOR: The rollout of more charging stations will encourage EV adoption in the United States. INTERSTATE HIGHWAY REST STOPS: They could see an influx of investment as companies establish charging stations along heavily traveled routes. TESLA: Under the new charging standards, the White House said EV market leader Tesla (TSLA.O) has agreed to open part of its U.S. charging network to EVs made by rivals. EV CHARGING COMPANIES: While the charging companies get financial support in their expansion efforts, only a handful of the dozen who commented to the Biden administration ahead of Wednesday's announcement said that they could meet the "Buy American" standards under the proposed timelines.
The Biden administration said Tesla will open at least 7,500 chargers to all EVs by the end of 2024. EV drivers must use the Tesla app or website to use the charging stations, the White House said. EV drivers will need to use the Tesla app or website to take advantage of Superchargers, the administration said. Tesla also agreed to more than double its US network of Superchargers, which are made in Buffalo, New York, it added. The White House said it aimed to create a "convenient, reliable and Made-in-America electric vehicle charging network so that the great American road trip can be electrified."
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) will open part of its U.S. charging network to electric vehicles (EVs) made by rivals as part of a $7.5 billion federal program to electrify the nation's highways to cut carbon emissions, the Biden administration said on Wednesday. There are also nearly 10,000 "destination" chargers with Tesla plugs that can recharge a vehicle overnight. Opening up access to Tesla's network would be a quick win for an ambitious federal program to build 500,000 EV chargers by 2030, up from 130,000 currently. Administration officials did not say whether a contract has been signed, but federal officials will control disbursement of about a third of the $7.5 billion federal program. Chris Harto, a senior policy analyst at Consumer Reports, said, "There is no doubt the $7.5 billion in federal charging investment threatens Tesla's competitive advantage.
It seeks to give consumers unfettered access to a growing coast-to-coast network of EV charging stations, including Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) SuperChargers. Tesla, the nation's largest EV maker and charging company, plans to adopt the CCS standard and expand beyond its proprietary connectors, the administration said. The United States and its allies Mexico and the European Union (EU) have clashed over protectionist policies implemented by Biden. The United States and the EU set up a task force last year to look at American laws that Europeans fear will discriminate against foreign electric car makers. EV chargers require iron and steel for some of their most crucial parts, including the internal structural frame, heating and cooling fans and the power transformer.

We talked to more than a dozen Tesla owners to find out what they like most about their cars — and what they think needs improvement. Since electric cars don't experience the same acceleration lag as gas vehicles, Teslas jolt forward the instant you put your foot down. A dearth of chargers on U.S. roads has slowed the growth of EV sales and the positive environmental impact, advocates say. In January of last year, Tesla wrote the Federal Highway Administration, offering the Biden administration suggestions on how to shape the charging program. In Ohio, the company responded to a recent request that companies submit charging proposals, state officials told Reuters. The Department of Transportation next week will detail final requirements that all electric vehicle chargers must meet to be eligible for funding under the $7.5 billion effort to electrify highways and interstates across the nation.
