A few years ago, desperate to avoid being acquired by a hedge fund, staff members of The Baltimore Sun made public pleas for a local entrepreneur to buy their publication. That request was recently realized: A Maryland businessman, David D. Smith, bought the storied newspaper, returning the 186-year-old newspaper to local hands for the first time in nearly 40 years. But Mr. Smith may not be quite what The Sun’s journalists were hoping for. Mr. Smith is the executive chairman of the conservative Sinclair Broadcast Group, one of the country’s largest local television station operators with nearly 200 stations, including Fox45 in Baltimore. Sinclair has been a reliable ally for former President Donald J. Trump; Mr. Smith reportedly told Mr. Trump in 2016, “We are here to deliver your message.” In 2018, the company required its stations to film promos echoing some of Mr. Trump’s attacks on the news media.

A local buyer taking over a struggling newspaper in the 21st century is normally cause for some celebration. “Have no fear of me,” Smith told the Sun newsroom on Tuesday, according to someone who was there and relayed the statement on condition of anonymity because it was a private meeting. Smith told the newspaper he had one partner: Armstrong Williams, a commentator who hosts a show on Sinclair’s affiliates. The video of the adult film actress in question is altered to make it appear as if she announced her intention to run for president from a YouTube livestream uploaded in 2020.

I’ve seen some incredible sunrises over the years, but this was something else: It was an experience that stole my heart. The entire experience at Tiger Hill lasts for about 30 to 45 minutes. For me the entire spectrum of colors during the Tiger Hill sunrise created a magical and surreal experience, with the play of light and shadow against the Himalayan peaks. The one big disappointment — both on Tiger Hill and elsewhere in Darjeeling — was the mess. The fast radio burst is one of the most distant and energetic ever observed. Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are intense, millisecond-long bursts of radio waves with unknown origins. Many FRBs release super bright radio waves lasting only a few milliseconds at most before disappearing, which makes fast radio bursts difficult to observe. “J-P showed that the (farther) away a fast radio burst is, the more diffuse gas it reveals between the galaxies. Astronomers said they hope that future radio telescopes, currently under construction in South Africa and Australia, will enable the detection of thousands more fast radio bursts at greater distances.

Sky-gazers across North America are in for a treat in 2024 when a total solar eclipse will pass over Mexico, the United States and Canada. That’s likely because a total solar eclipse won’t be visible across the contiguous US again until August 2044. The total solar eclipse will be visible in parts of Mexico, Canada and more than 10 US states, while a crescent-shaped partial solar eclipse is expected to appear in 49 states — weather permitting. During the 2017 total solar eclipse, a young woman was diagnosed with solar retinopathy, retinal damage from exposure to solar radiation, in both eyes after viewing the eclipse with what doctors believed were eclipse glasses not held to the safety standard. If you bought eclipse glasses to see the “ring of fire,” save your eclipse glasses and viewers for the total solar eclipse in April by storing them at room temperature in an envelope or their original packaging to avoid scratches.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A newly discovered comet is swinging through our cosmic neighborhood for the first time in more than 400 years. Stargazers across the Northern Hemisphere should catch a glimpse as soon as possible — either this week or early next — because it will be another 400 years before the wandering ice ball returns. The comet, which is kilometer-sized (1/2-mile), will sweep safely past Earth on Sept. 12, passing within 78 million miles (125 million kilometers). The comet will come closest to the sun — closer than Mercury is — on about Sept. 17 before departing the solar system. “The comet looks amazing right now, with a long, highly structured tail, a joy to image with a telescope,” he said.

CNN —India launched its first spacecraft dedicated to studying the sun, building on a month of historic successes for the country’s civil space efforts. The spacecraft, called Aditya-L1, launched from Sriharikota, an island off the Bay of Bengal, at 11:50 a.m. Saturday local time (2:20 am ET). The successful liftoff of Aditya-L1 comes less than two weeks after India’s space agency, the Indian Space Research Organization, made history by landing its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the lunar surface. CNN —As rapidly warming global temperatures help push Antarctica’s sea ice to unprecedented lows, it’s threatening the very existence of one of the continent’s most iconic species: emperor penguins. Emperor penguins rely on stable sea ice attached to land for nesting and raising their chicks. For the past few years, scientists have been sounding the alarm about a steep decline in Antarctica’s sea ice. In mid-July, Antarctic sea ice reached the lowest level for this time of year since records began in 1945. Antarctic sea ice also helps regulate the planet’s temperature, reflecting the sun’s incoming energy back to space.

CNN —The Solar Orbiter mission has discovered jets of material rapidly releasing from the sun’s outer atmosphere. An artist's concept shows the Solar Orbiter spacecraft circling the sun. The advanced instruments aboard Solar Orbiter, as well as NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, are helping to unlock the biggest mysteries that remain about the sun. The sun’s magnetic field is so massive that it stretches beyond Pluto, providing a pathway for solar wind to travel directly across the solar system. Solar Orbiter works in tandem with Parker Solar Probe, which is orbiting the sun on a seven-year mission after launching in August 2018.

The findings are “extremely exciting and unexpected, especially since Neptune’s previous period of low cloud activity was not nearly as dramatic and prolonged,” Chavez added. The findings also contradict the idea of the clouds being affected by Neptune’s four seasons, which each last about 40 years. Additionally, Neptune storms rising from the deep atmosphere do influence the planet’s cloud cover — but aren’t related to clouds formed in the upper atmosphere. That variable could interfere with studies looking at correlations between photochemically produced clouds and the solar cycle. More research could also suggest how long the near absence of clouds on Neptune might last.

An episode of the animated series “The Simpsons” depicted fires caused by sunlight reflecting off a chrome statue, not a “directed energy weapon,” as claimed in social media posts linking such weapons to August 2023 wildfires in Hawaii. Posts on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter (here), and Facebook (here), (here) link the clip to the natural disaster on Hawaii’s island of Maui with captions such as “The Simpsons predicting Direct Energy Weapons!?.
