The FBI recently told Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be the bureau’s next director, that he was the target of an Iranian cyberattack, two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News. The exact timing of the cyberattack is unclear, but it was before Trump named Patel as his choice to be the next head of the FBI, the officials said. It’s unclear whether they actually accessed the communications and, if so, how much data was viewed or stolen, the sources said. Current FBI Director Christopher Wray, whose 10-year term doesn’t expire until 2027, would have to resign or be fired for Patel to take over the position, which requires Senate confirmation. Three Iranian operatives were charged in September with hacking Trump’s presidential campaign as part of what the Justice Department said at the time was an effort to undermine the U.S. election.

For everyday consumers, the simplest way to send encrypted messages or make encrypted calls is to use communications apps like Signal or WhatsApp that have implemented end-to-end encryption between other Signal and WhatsApp users. Both apps also allow users to make encrypted phone calls with other users through the internet. If iMessage users text other iMessage users or Google Messages users text other Google Messages users, those chats are automatically encrypted with the Signal protocol. For phone calls, Google and Apple offer encryption if the calls are made through their internet-connected calling apps — Google Fi and FaceTime. In some circumstances, affecting members of both the Trump and Harris campaigns, as well as the office of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y., they were able to listen to phone calls.

Oscar Andrade says every day is an opportunity to rescue migrants in the Arizona desert, where temperatures exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit this year. For Andrade, the number of sets of migrant remains is a cause for worry. According to the researchers’ data, the largest discrepancies in numbers occurred in 2021 and 2020, when Pima County recorded 225 and 206 migrant deaths, respectively, compared with Border Patrol data, which totaled 78 and 43. Border Patrol changes and their impactMartinez and his team of researchers noted that the discrepancies in the numbers of migrant deaths between coroners' offices and Border Patrol began to increase in 2013 and have not stopped growing. Under a border security initiative that ended in 2012, Border Patrol was responsible for trying to find as many deaths as possible in border counties.

Neuberger’s remarks came as senior US intelligence officials gave a classified briefing to senators Wednesday on the Chinese hacking campaign. Verizon and AT&T are among the major telecom carriers targeted by the hackers, CNN previously reported. The FBI began investigating the Chinese hacking activity in late spring or early summer this year, a senior FBI official said in the most detailed update yet from the bureau on the espionage campaign. The hackers also “copied certain information that was subject to US law enforcement requests pursuant to court orders,” the senior FBI official said. But the portal within telecom providers that allows law enforcement agencies to conduct court-ordered wiretaps was not the primary focus of the hackers, the official said.
