REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstWASHINGTON, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Two senior Biden administration officials got behind the wheel of new electric vehicles (EV) Wednesday at the Washington, D.C. auto show to urge Americans to consider buying a zero-emission model. They also highlighted that since President Joe Biden took office, companies have announced nearly $130 billion in U.S. EV investment including $56 billion in EV manufacturing and $72 billion in battery production. "It's electric vehicles, it's the guts to the electric vehicle, it's the guts to the battery - the whole supply chain now locating in the United States." Congress has approved billions of dollars in new incentives, low-cost loans and other funding for EV production and $5 billion for charging stations. Some consumers are still confused about whether they will qualify for EV credits.
Between March 2020 and December 2022, average monthly loan payments jumped about 29%, according to Dealertrack data Chesbrough shared. "Not everybody has risen their monthly payments in quite the amount." Alfa Romeo, Mini, Subaru, Jaguar, Audi, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Toyota, and Genesis, made up the 10 brands with the lowest increases in their average monthly loan payments over the same period. Toyota was one of the 10 brands with the lowest increase in their average monthly loan payments since the pandemic began. "We think that there's really not going to be enough demand there at these high prices," Chesbrough said.
Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard has had a frugal lifestyle since his early days as a climber and surfer. This includes eating cat food and taking soda bottles from trash cans to redeem for money. Even now, Chouinard still wears old clothes and drives a rundown Subaru, The NY Times reported. Before founding Patagonia, Chouinard made a living selling climbing equipment from the back of his car. In 1966, Chouinard set up a base for his equipment business, Chouinard Equipment, in a rented tin boiler room of an abandoned packing company slaughterhouse in California.

CNN —Subaru is recalling 271,694 SUVs because some of them could catch fire. The company is advising owners of some 2019 to 2022 model year Subaru Ascent SUVs to park them outside, away from garages or other structures, and not to leave the vehicles unattended with the engine running. If drivers notice smoke or odors coming from the vehicle’s dashboard or footwell area while driving, Subaru advises them to immediately pull over, turn off the vehicle and call Subaru Roadside Assistance. To fix the recalled vehicles, Subaru dealers will inspect the parts and, if needed, replace the ground bolt, ground wire and connectors. The company said it will contact owners of vehicles involved in the recall by mail within the next 60 days.
Car companies expect to make billions charging customers recurring fees for vehicle features. As vehicles become increasingly connected to the internet, car companies aim to rake in billions by having customers pay monthly or annual subscriptions to access certain features. But car companies still haven't figured out exactly what customers are willing to pay for, and what feels like a frustrating upcharge. An April study by Cox Automotive found that 75% of consumers are not willing to subscribe to most vehicle features. Hackers have helped car owners upgrade their vehicles for years, and subscription features could be their next target, Vice reported.

With its batteries fully charged, the new Prius Prime will go at least 50% farther without burning any gasoline as today’s Prius Prime does, according to Toyota. It will be able to produce up to 220 horsepower, 100 horsepower more than today’s Prius Prime. Almost every vehicle in Toyota’s line-up is now available with hybrid power. Along with the Prius, Toyota also unveiled the Toyota BZ Compact SUV concept.

Popular cars like the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Mustang aren't affordable to buy used anymore, according to a new study. For example, a three-year-old Toyota Prius will now run you $32,000. A shortage of new vehicles and other pandemic-related factors have driven car prices through the roof in recent years. "From August of 2019, well before the pandemic lockdowns started, to August of 2022, new car prices increased by almost 29 percent, and three-year-old used car prices increased by 52 percent, but incomes increased by only 13%," said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars. A three-year-old used car needs to cost $25,542 or less to be affordable under iSeeCars' criteria.
TOKYO, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Toyota is considering a sharp increase in production of its first mass-market battery-electric vehicle from 2025, according to three people with knowledge of the developing plans, ramping up output of the vehicle amid a broader strategy rethink. The car is produced at Toyota Motor Corp's Motomachi plant near its headquarters on a shared assembly line with gasoline cars and hybrids. Both the current and potential production numbers include those of the Subaru Corp Solterra, which is made on the same platform. The increase would see Toyota add production at another plant near its headquarters, the Takaoka factory, said the three people, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was not public. The Japanese carmaker Subaru is using Oracle's cloud for its high-performance computing. Discounting is also a common tactic to win over those marquee customers — especially as the use of multiple cloud providers has become more common. Subaru completed the move from its data centers to Oracle's cloud in about six months, anticipating a 30% reduction in its technology costs after moving to the cloud, Takekuma said. Subaru is also using other cloud providers in other parts of the company, including Google Cloud for some of its machine learning and artificial-intelligence capabilities. "So it's absolutely critical that our data transfer, our authentication, all of those pieces, are able to smoothly interface with the other cloud providers'."
The CIA launched its own podcast Thursday, saying it wanted to step out from the shadows to “demystify” its spy work and to help Americans understand the intelligence agency’s role. During Burns’ tenure, the CIA and other intelligence agencies have broken with past practice and declassified intelligence about Russia’s war effort in Ukraine as part of an information war with the Kremlin. Burns also said the agency had placed a priority on China and set up a new center focused on the country. The CIA was trying to devote more resources to that effort and was recruiting more Mandarin speakers, he said. “It’s a tally of the lives of stranded American citizens and Afghan partners, partners who had fought and bled with us over two decades in Afghanistan.
