Eleven of the last 12 American presidents have endured an assassination attempt or a plot against their lives. The same is true for 20 of the country’s 45. Most of the recent plots have been foiled early, making the indelible image of Donald Trump fist-pumping in Pennsylvania seem like an atavistic monument or an ominous portent or perhaps both. And though we may describe the stochastic terror of the past decade in terms of ugly bumper stickers and reckless speeches, there has been real violence, not just incitement. “No political party, movement, ideology or manner of thinking has had an absolute monopoly on this violence, and it really hasn’t mattered whether the surrounding political atmosphere was aggressive or docile,” Dayen wrote.

CNN —The US Secret Service was “solely responsible” for the implementation and execution of security at the site of Saturday’s rally for former President Donald Trump’s campaign, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told CNN in an interview Tuesday evening. “At that particular site, we divided up areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is totally responsible for the design and implementation and the execution of the site,” she told CNN. Tragedy strikes and traders (or trading algorithms) sniff out a way to make money off of it. Stocks also went on a tear as Covid-19 killed millions and gutted economies across the globe. “The market’s up today, but the market’s up every day,” Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, tells me. Whether or not the political bump lasts, some traders did seize on the moment to double down on so-called Trump trades. In short, when the yield curve gets steeper, that’s a sign bond traders are nervous.

But political violence hasn’t stopped since then. The nation is also still processing the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. In one of the most poignant reactions, Giffords said in a statement, “Political violence is terrifying. Read previewNASA said it has no plans right now to send one of Elon Musk's spacecrafts to rescue two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station. Speaking in a joint NASA-Boeing press briefing on Wednesday, NASA official Steve Stich said there had been "no discussion" about sending a SpaceX Dragon to pick up NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, stranded on the ISS aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. The prospect of the astronauts being rescued by SpaceX would be humiliating for Boeing, which is competing with Elon Musk's rocket company to transport astronauts to the ISS. The aviation giant has lagged behind SpaceX, which completed its first crewed mission to the ISS with its Dragon capsule in 2020. Boeing and NASA did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.

With NASA astronauts docked at the International Space Station far longer than planned, the agency's leadership on Wednesday acknowledged potential alternatives to Boeing's Starliner for returning the crew to Earth. Still, the Boeing's spacecraft remains the primary option for returning crew, officials said. Starliner has now been in space 36 days and counting as the agency and Boeing perform additional testing in New Mexico before clearing the spacecraft to return. The mission is the first time Starliner is carrying people, flying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. "[But] there's really been no discussion with sending another Dragon to rescue the Starliner crew," Stich added later.

CNN —Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft and its crew have been in space for more than a month — much longer than the weeklong stay initially expected. But the two astronauts piloting this historic test mission mostly spoke favorably about the vehicle that carried them to the International Space Station, marking the inaugural crewed flight of the Boeing-built spacecraft. I mean, truly amazing,” Butch Wilmore, one of two NASA astronauts helming this mission, said in a Wednesday news briefing. The pump’s failure “put us in a position where we’d have to store an awful lot of urine,” said Dana Weigel, manager for NASA’s International Space Station Program, before the flight. SpaceX designed its cargo Dragon spacecraft years before its Crew Dragon capsule, while Boeing somewhat started from scratch with Starliner.

New Jersey businessman and co-owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer, George Norcross walks to Judge Patricia McInerney's courtroom at City Hall in Philadelphia. The New Jersey Democratic power broker charged with racketeering by the state attorney general pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he threatened people whose properties he sought to take over and orchestrated tax incentive legislation to benefit organizations he controlled. "My client emphatically states that he is not guilty," Norcross' attorney Michael Critchley told Judge Peter Warshaw. A longtime kingmaker in southern New Jersey, Norcross often wielded influence through back channels. Boeing's crew flight test represents the first time Starliner is carrying people, flying NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams. Before launching on June 5, Boeing and NASA planned for Starliner to be in space for nine days. As of Friday, the Starliner flight has tallied 24 days and counting. NASA and Boeing say the delay for testing is solely to gather more data about the spacecraft's performance, in particular its thruster system. The Starliner crew flight test represents a final major step before NASA certifies Boeing to fly crew on operational, six-month missions.

Setbacks in orbitSeveral more helium leaks were identified while the craft was en route to the International Space Station along with the thruster issues. That’s why Boeing and NASA teams then chose to leave the Starliner spacecraft safely docked with the space station while they worked to learn as much as possible about those issues. The first Starliner test mission took place without a crew in December 2019. That’s at the core of the mysteries Boeing and NASA are seeking to unravel during the Starliner spacecraft’s extended mission. Extended stays in spaceIt’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months.

Scott Wren, a senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, recently noted that market breadth is abnormally narrow. He found that the five best performers in the S&P 500 accounted for nearly three-fifths of its exceptional 10.6% year-to-date gain through May 31. That fate will soon apply to the S&P 500, Wren warned. Such a sell-off would take the S&P 500 below 5,000 for the first time since April. "And it's tough to be patient when the S&P 500 set a bunch of all-time high records."

Recent headlines suggest that our nation’s business leaders are embracing the presidential candidate Donald Trump. His campaign would have you believe that our nation’s top chief executives are returning to support Mr. Trump for president, touting declarations of support from some prominent financiers like Steve Schwarzman and David Sacks. Mr. Trump continues to suffer from the lowest level of corporate support in the history of the Republican Party. I know this because I have worked with roughly 1,000 chief executives a year, running a school for them, which I started 35 years ago, and I speak with business leaders almost every day. The reality is that the top corporate leaders working today, like many Americans, aren’t entirely comfortable with either Mr. Trump or President Biden.

Once-obscure chipmaker Broadcom has enjoyed a record-setting rally that's pushed its market capitalization inches behind Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate and its portfolio of household names and economic bellwethers. When Broadcom hit an all-time high earlier this week, its market capitalization briefly surpassed drug maker Eli Lilly's. As of Tuesday's close, Broadcom had a market cap of $839 billion, right behind Eli Lilly's $845 billion and Berkshire's $882 billion. Omaha-based Berkshire is currently No.7 in market value, after a cluster of megacap technology giants. Big AI beneficiary Broadcom, meanwhile, is seeing strong demand from customers in need of high-capacity chips that can power complex AI applications.

Spaceflight veterans Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station aboard the Starliner on June 6. It’s not uncommon for astronauts to unexpectedly extend their stay aboard the space station — for days, weeks or even months. But the situation makes for a moment of uncertainty and embarrassment that joins a long list of similar blunders by the Boeing Starliner program, which is already years behind schedule. The Starliner spacecraft on NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test is pictured docked to the Harmony module's forward port on June 13 as the International Space Station orbited 262 miles above Egypt's Mediterranean coast. The first Starliner test mission, flown without crew in late 2019, was riddled with missteps.
