North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to override the Democratic governor's vetoes on two election bills on Tuesday, giving themselves new power over election administration and shortening a key voting deadline ahead of the 2024 election. Currently, all election boards in the state are controlled by the governor's party, with nominations made by state parties and appointments made by the governor. "The legislative takeover of state and local elections boards could doom our state's elections to gridlock and severely limit early voting," Cooper said when he vetoed the bill. (AP) — The New York attorney general's office on Thursday sent a cease-and-desist letter to a group accused of confronting voters at their homes while claiming to be state election officials and falsely accusing people of committing voter fraud. The letter orders the group NY Citizens Audit to immediately stop any voter intimidation efforts and turn over records on its training of and communications with its door-to-door canvassers. “These allegations, if true, could constitute unlawful voter deception under New York state law and unlawful voter intimidation under both state and federal law,” reads the letter, which was obtained by the Associated Press. The attorney general's office said it has not seen evidence that anyone who was approached has committed voter fraud. Ron DeSantis for defending Florida's new public school standards that teach that some Black people benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills. "But this is one more part of a fact pattern of Ron DeSantis being mean and hateful." A few of DeSantis' Republican opponents, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and former New Jersey Gov. Doug Burgum, another 2024 GOP contender, told NBC News "it's an absurd idea" to think that slavery benefited Black people.
