CNN —Two federal judges in south Florida urged District Judge Aileen Cannon to forgo overseeing the criminal prosecution of former President Donald Trump when she was first assigned the classified documents case in 2023, according to a report from The New York Times. Cannon is still overseeing the case, which has seen a multitude of delays and is not yet scheduled to go to trial. Altonaga’s chambers declined to comment on the report to CNN. The Times did not identify the second judge who reportedly contacted Cannon. Critics of the judge say that she has slowed the pace of the case to a near standstill, making a pre-election trial essentially out of reach.

Six years after a gunman killed 17 people at a Parkland, Fla., high school in one of the deadliest school shootings in American history, the site of the attack is being torn down. The demolition of the former freshman building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was scheduled to begin on Friday and was expected to take a few weeks to complete, Broward County school district officials said in a statement. Rather than using explosives, workers plan to tear down the three-story building piece by piece, officials said, starting with the top floor. Steady rain showers were falling for the fourth consecutive day across South Florida on Friday morning, capping a week in which the soggy weather pattern caused major travel disruptions and flooded homes and roadways. The threat of heavy rain was expected to slowly diminish over the next couple of days, according to the National Weather Service, with forecasters still cautioning that lingering showers may cause problems. Renewed areas of flash flooding remained possible into the afternoon across that part of the state.
