Cervantes called the shooting a “tragedy” that was “preventable.”Jessinya Mina. Mina’s boyfriend, Andrew Sanchez, 18, spoke to investigators and said he was responsible for the 9 mm gun being found by the 2 ½-year-old toddler. Sanchez was booked into jail on charges of child endangerment and criminal storage of a firearm, both felonies, police said in a statement. WASHINGTON — In legacy mode, outgoing President Joe Biden’s White House is warning the Republicans who are about to take power against repealing his biggest achievements. During his 2024 campaign, Trump said, “We will rescind all unspent funds under the misnamed Inflation Reduction Act.”Republicans won a 53-seat Senate majority and a slim House majority of 220-215 in the 2024 elections. Other Republicans say there are plenty of other places for the GOP to find cuts to finance their multi-trillion-dollar effort. Murphy said he also favors slashing Affordable Care Act subsidies under the Inflation Reduction Act, which the Biden administration has used to limit insurance premiums for many in the middle class. “I think a lot of it needs to go away.”Asked whether the slim margins could hinder House Republicans when it comes to passing the major party-line measures, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., said it’s a familiar dynamic for them.

WASHINGTON — FBI Director Christopher Wray plans to resign at the end of the Biden administration, as President-elect Donald Trump takes office, Wray told bureau employees on Wednesday. "I mean, it would sort of seem pretty obvious that if Kash gets in, he’s going to be taking somebody’s place, right?" Trump said, responding to a question about whether he would fire Wray if he didn't resign on his own. Even when those circumstances existed, though, agents had to get approval from superiors in order to plan an arrest in a sensitive location. The idea that Trump might allow ICE agents to arrest anywhere, even inside schools and houses of worship, without the current limitations began circulating in Project 2025, a list of policy proposals distributed by the Heritage Foundation prior to the election. Some church leaders say they have faced harassment for providing sanctuary space to migrants and are already having conversations about the impacts of a policy change on sensitive locations. The church leader asked that NBC News not use their name because of safety concerns for their congregation. One former DHS official said change the sensitive locations policy might be welcome news for some agents who have felt stymied by restrictions on where they can operate and felt the policy was “abused” by wanted individuals in the past.

Tasked with coordinating Trump’s core campaign promise of a mass deportation, Homan has used the appearances to begin detailing how the efforts might take shape and how the administration will move its plan forward. Homan has not been as direct as Trump has about how he sees the military’s role in the operation he will oversee. Tom Homan, who does not have to face Senate confirmation, has been going on Fox News and other conservative outlets to talk about Trump's plans on immigration. Funding mass deportationA major outstanding question, however, remains how the incoming Trump administration would fund a deportation scheme at that large a scale. “For those governors and mayors who are saying they’re going to stop Tom Homan, they’re going to stop President Trump: Shame on you,” Homan said on Fox News on Nov. 20.

JetBlue Airways plans to add domestic first-class seats in 2026 on airplanes that don’t have its top-tier Mint class, the latest initiative to win over higher-paying customers and get back to profitability. A humpback whale has stunned scientists with a journey that spanned three oceans and more than 8,000 miles, setting the record for the longest known migration between breeding grounds. “Changing climatic and ocean conditions could be driving these migrations to new breeding grounds. Some whale migration routes are known to exceed 5,000 miles between feeding and breeding grounds, and humpback whales in particular have some of the longest migrations of any mammal. The research provided “photographic evidence that confirmed humpback whales switch between breeding grounds,” he said in a telephone interview Wednesday. The organization claims that a humpback whale’s tail is so unique that there is a “97% to 99%” success rate for matching photos submitted for the species.

So to say Michigan Democrats were shocked by the mayor's decision to go independent is a bit of understatement. In my experience, most independent candidates who previously ran and won as Democrats or Republicans but then switch do so out of some political necessity. For the less politically engaged, a category that includes many key swing voters, this is a very appealing elevator pitch. But not every state party will be as desperate as Kansas Democrats were in accepting a party-switcher as its party savior. Ultimately, the national environment has never looked more enticing for independent candidates to disrupt the two-party duopoly.

Instead, price growth may actually be stuck at its current rate — not super fast, but not slow enough to ease concerns among economic policymakers that consumers won’t continue to experience an uncomfortable pace of price growth. That stalled progress would be worrisome for the Federal Reserve, which had hoped to continue to bring down interest rates as the new year began in tandem with slower price growth. Now, analysts are saying it’s highly likely the Fed will pause its rate-reduction plans in January. More generally, the economy, to a great degree, remains propped up by upper-middle-class and high-net-worth individuals who are more resistant to — and, by way of their spending, can sometimes accelerate — price growth. What’s more, it’s not even clear that interest rates in the rest of the economy are substantially responding to the rate cuts the Fed has enacted.

A bankruptcy judge on Tuesday rejected a bid by The Onion’s parent company to buy Alex Jones’ far-right media empire, including the website Infowars, ruling that the auction process was unfair. A rival bidder associated with Jones, First United American Cos., offered $3.5 million in cash, or twice as much cash as The Onion’s parent company. So if you have $10,000 in gains and $12,000 in losses, you won’t owe any capital gains tax on the $10,000, and you will be able to deduct $2,000 from your regular income. A traditional IRA can be funded with before-tax dollars (thereby reducing the money you have to pay income tax on for 2024). If you give them to a grandchild, their capital gains basis is the value of the shares the day they receive them. Whereas if you first sold the shares directly you’d owe capital gains tax on the $8,000 gain, leaving you with anywhere from 15% to 37% less in cash to give them, depending on whether the gain was short- or long-term and depending on your tax bracket. It is money that is exempt from income tax, as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes.
