CNN —Rescue teams in Zimbabwe are continuing the search for survivors, three days after a disused gold mine in the country’s Chegutu district collapsed, killing at least 10 illegal miners. The mine, which is located in Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland West province, sits 62 miles west of the Zimbabwean capital, Harare. Artisanal mining is common in Zimbabwe, which is rich in vast deposits of gold and diamonds. Accidents at illegal mining sites are also common in the southern African country. In 2019, the bodies of about two dozen illegal gold miners were pulled out from a flooded mine in a rural settlement in the Mashonaland West province.

Calif. (AP) — Justin Thomas committed to a driver change, tinkered a little with his swing and got immediate results with a 5-under 67 that left him four strokes off the pace Friday in the Fortinet Championship. One of four U.S. Ryder Cup team members at Silverado Resort, Thomas feels much better about his game than he did a short time ago. Two-time defending champion Max Homa, also on the Ryder Cup team, had a 66 to match Thomas at 8 under. U.S. captain Zach Ryder (74) and co-captain Stewart Cink (72) were tied at 1-under 143 and missed the cut in the final tune-up to the Ryder Cup in two weeks. “If I drive it like I did today, I’ll use it for the rest of my career,” Thomas joked.

A developer and an architect explain how they transformed NYC financial district office buildings. But some developers and architects have used the opportunity to lean into a business model they'd been pursuing long before COVID-19: turning empty office buildings into housing. They're currently finishing up their transformation of 160 Water Street, a 1970s office tower in lower Manhattan that will become 586 apartments. Steven Paynter, an expert in office-to-residential conversions at the architecture firm Gensler, thinks converted office buildings will be a trendy, new type of housing. Advertisement Advertisement Watch:The renovated exterior of Franklin Tower, a 24-story former office building in downtown Philadelphia that now contains luxury residences. But renovating old office buildings is no simple task. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn some cases, particularly when it comes to postwar high-rises, it's more economical to tear old office buildings down and replace them with new housing, Hogan said. When Gensler renovated Franklin Tower, a vacant 1970s office building in downtown Philadelphia, it fully reconstructed the facade and windows.

The rise of remote work, high interest rates, and climate regulations all pose problems for office buildings. A new study found that more than 2,000 US office buildings could be converted into up to 400,000 apartments. And new environmental regulations require that buildings meet certain energy efficiency standards that can require costly renovations. Turning office buildings into apartments isn't a new concept, and it's one that New York City has embraced in theory. Of course, office buildings require some retrofitting to be turned from sprawling workplaces to livable apartments.

REUTERS/Alex... Read moreLONDON, May 20 (Reuters) - Russian mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said on Saturday that his Wagner fighters had completed the capture of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut after months of intense fighting, a claim denied by Ukraine. Zelenskiy portrayed "Fortress Bakhmut" as a symbol of defiance which he said was bleeding the Russian military dry. If confirmed, Bakhmut would be Russia's first major capture since July last year and a morale-boosting battlefield win after a string of defeats. The city's capture would be a boost for Russia's most high-profile mercenaries - Wagner - and their publicity-hungry founder Prigozhin.
You would think that the architects who designed Vladimir Putin's palace thought of everything. They failed to hide plans showing two elaborate tunnels running beneath the palace complex — plans that any competent state-security apparatus would fight tooth-and-nail to keep secret. The underground complex beneath Putin's palace consists of two separate tunnels connected by an elevator that descends roughly 50 meters below the surface. Gelendzhik is the town closest to the palace complex, a five-hour drive from the resort city of Sochi. "With the war in Ukraine," Kimmage said, "there's speechmaking, there's propaganda, there's exaggeration — there's this performative aspect that plays to Russia's domestic politics.

That’s in part because those shortcomings have echoed through the years, as subsequent “Star Wars” mythology has contorted itself, sometimes messily, in order to accommodate them. Still, Episode VI ill-served some of the original trilogy’s significant characters, in ways that have been debated across the decades, yielding the kind of arguments that have become one of the “Star Wars” franchise’s most renewable resources. If you see one of these apocalyptic-looking shelf clouds coming toward you, it's important to seek shelter, Wysocki said. The National Weather Service of Chicago said the area was experiencing severe weather threats throughout this morning, with strong winds and rains. Derek Van Dam, a CNN meteorologist, tweeted that the "powerful" shelf cloud brought wind gusts of up to 60 mph to Chicago.
We were all quiet on the two-minute walk to the mine's elevator shaft, lost in our own thoughts. Every single day I think about the fact that I may be going down for the last time. Today is the day my son loses his father. As an underground miner, you can't help but think about stuff like this. Rockwell wonders if he'll make it out of the mine alive during his walk to the elevator shaft.
Cory Rockwell is an underground miner at copper mine Nevada Copper in the town of Yerington. Now, I'm an underground miner — and the job saved my life. Three years later, I moved to a different surface mine, but I really wanted to work underground, so I was applying to underground mines on the side. Years later, I am now a powders guy at underground copper mine Nevada Copper. At Nevada Copper, I'm responsible for dropping explosives into the holes drilled into the ground.
"That safety car again tried to take the victory away from us in Jeddah but not this time," said Perez, who started on pole last year but was caught out by a safety car deployment and ended up fourth. "I was on for victory last year so finally I got it," added the Mexican, who now has five career wins and finished 5.355 seconds clear despite the safety car cutting his early advantage. It took Perez four laps to take charge with the Mexican meeting no resistance as he swept past for the lead, but he could not relax. When the safety car period ended on lap 20, Verstappen was pushing Russell for third and took the place three laps later. Verstappen went second, 5.6 seconds behind Perez, at the half-distance but the gap stayed constant with the Red Bulls in a race of their own.
Yet Russia and Ukraine are still battling for the small city of Bakhmut. After nearly eight months of trench warfare Ukrainian forces are surrounded on three sides, Kyiv's supply lines are fraying, and Moscow is in control of just under half of Bakhmut. Volodymr Zelenskiy, Ukraine's president, has portrayed "Fortress Bakhmut" as a symbol of defiance which is bleeding the Russian military dry. It also claims to be decimating Ukrainian forces. A regional transport and logistics hub, Bakhmut would be useful for Russian forces although that depends on how much of its infrastructure is intact.
