Angel Mitchell was in knots Friday morning at the eastern Tennessee hospital where her 83-year-old mother had been admitted days earlier for pneumonia. People evacuate Unicoi County Hospital due to unusually high and rising water from the Nolichucky River. Mitchell said her mother was fastened to a gurney and hoisted up, then taken to another hospital. During that last hour, a panic attack set in as she thought about her mother. Mitchell said she's grateful everyone at the hospital survived, but on Monday, her mother received another devastating diagnosis — that she has colon cancer.

Jon-Adrian Velazquez spent close to 27 years caught in the criminal justice system — nearly all of it behind bars in New York's Sing Sing prison, convicted of a murder he insisted he did not commit. ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Everybody sheltering at A-B Tech had a story to tell Monday about surviving Hurricane Helene. Three days after a massive storm swamped this landlocked city, the shelter at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, known locally as A-B Tech, was at capacity with 149 people, including many families, facing an uncertain future together. “This was shocking to everybody,” said James Yulon Ferguson, 52, whose trailer in the nearby community of Swannanoa is now underwater. Ferguson said he had received the warning that Helene was headed toward Asheville, but he “didn’t think it was going to be that bad.”At first, he decided to stay put. But then the storm got a whole lot worse.

Two years after an Alabama prisoner was spared when staff members struggled to execute him by lethal injection, officials plan to try again Thursday — using the rare method of nitrogen gas. He filed a federal lawsuit in March seeking to halt his execution, citing the state's past execution failures and concerns that the method of nitrogen hypoxia would add pain and prolong death. "The resolution of this case confirms that Alabama's nitrogen hypoxia system is reliable and humane," Marshall said in a previous statement. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Battleground state election officials from both parties are pushing back against a falsehood that has proven pervasive ahead of the 2024 reaction: that noncitizens are voting in widespread numbers. The comments came as former President Donald Trump and his GOP allies have talked up efforts to crack down on noncitizens voting, which is already illegal. Maricopa County has sued seeking clarity on whether those voters can vote in state and local elections this fall. Republicans at the national and state level have fueled unfounded noncitizen voting claims in the run-up to this year's presidential election. Election officials said Thursday they were taking steps to debunk conspiracy theories ahead of the 2024 election.

The NAACP plans to spend $20 million encouraging Black Americans, a critical voting bloc in the presidential race, to turn out to vote across 12 states this fall. The NAACP’s campaign is not geared toward benefiting specific candidates, but rather is designed to broadly mobilize and educate Black voters ahead of the 2024 election. The group plans to engage more than 14.5 million Black voters. While Black voters traditionally overwhelmingly support Democrats, the margin of victory and turnout levels among the group can make a major difference. By comparison, exit polls across those same states showed President Joe Biden won 89% of Black voters, compared with 9% for Trump.

A Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian missile facility early Wednesday threw up towering fireballs visible from space and thundering detonations that triggered earthquake monitors. Officials on both sides said it was the result of a large Ukrainian drone attack on Toropets, a town in the Tver region around 230 miles from the Russian capital. Russian state media has previously reported that the military was building an arsenal for storing missiles and other explosives there. Russia’s air defense systems destroyed some 54 drones launched overnight against five western Russian regions, Russian state news agencies said, citing a report from Moscow’s defense ministry. Kyiv has increasingly been hitting back with drone attacks on what it says are military targets on Russian soil.
