After an emotive and at times impassioned debate, Britain’s lawmakers on Friday voted to allow assisted dying for terminally ill patients in England and Wales under strict conditions, opening the way to one of the most profound social changes in the country in decades. By 330 votes to 275, members of Parliament gave their support to a bill that would permit doctors to help some terminally ill patients to end their lives. Friday’s vote was not the final say on the matter for Parliament, as it will now be scrutinized in parliamentary committees and amendments to the bill may be put forward. The new legislation would apply to a narrow group: Applicants would have to be over 18, diagnosed with a terminal illness and have been given no more than six months to live. Two doctors and a judge would be required to give their approval, and the fatal drugs would have to be self-administered.

CNN —Nick Cannon has spoken out about his recent diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder, saying “I need help.”The “Masked Singer” host revealed in a podcast earlier this month that he had been “clinically diagnosed” with the mental health condition. Now he has said he is accepting of the label and using it to try to improve himself. “To be able to say I’m an example for others, but also be healing during the self-process works too.”People with narcissistic personality disorder have “an unreasonably high sense of their own importance,” which leads them to seek excess attention, according to the Mayo Clinic. In the episode, which first aired on November 8, he told psychologist Cheyenne Bryant that he had been clinically diagnosed with the condition. And in that there’s markers.”Cannon said he identified with all of the so-called markers, besides lack of empathy and rage.

CNN —In a single post, the president-elect told the world what the end of the Ukraine war might look like. Kellogg, Trump’s 80-year-old former national security advisor, has laid out his peace plan in some detail, writing for the America First policy institute in April. Kellogg says more weapons should have been given before the Russian invasion, and immediately afterwards, to enable Ukraine to win. But that’s when the plan – which CNN has reported that Trump’s soon-to-be national security adviser is considering - stops being to Ukraine’s liking. The plan notes the United States manufactures 14,000 155 artillery rounds a month, which Ukraine can use up in just 48 hours.

It’s misinformation about autism and mass injury that doctors and public health officials have disproven over and over again. Less attention has focused on the CDC, a public health agency Kennedy has long vilified in speeches and writings. In his 2017 speech, Kennedy criticized ACIP as a group of self-interested actors who base decisions on financial gain instead of public health. “The people who are on ACIP are not public health advocates,” he said. “We would know the answer to that question if we were given access to the vaccine safety database, but they’ve hidden it,” Kennedy said.

CNN —When photographer Elizabeth Kahane’s husband asked where in New York they should live following their engagement in 1998, she had a very specific requirement for their marital home: A view of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Its street-facing windows offered the perfect vantage point to watch — and photograph — the procession, which travels down through midtown Manhattan to Macy’s department store on Thanksgiving morning. The photographer has captured the spectacle almost every year since, missing the parade just twice in over a quarter of a century. Thomas the Tank Engine, the Kool-Aid Man and Boss Baby are just some of the dozens of other outsized characters Kahane has pictured floating slowly past her home — often at eye-level. Some shots were taken from inside the apartment, with kids seen enjoying the surreal view of parade characters — from Sonic the Hedgehog to Pikachu, gleefully riding a Poké Ball-inspired sled — looming outside.

pixelfit | E+ | Getty ImagesAsking for a promotion can feel daunting and negotiation can be tricky — but learning how to navigate the process is important. People often approach negotiations with the wrong mindset, said Horacio Falcão, INSEAD professor, negotiation expert, author, serial entrepreneur, and designer of INSEAD's "The Negotiation Course for the World," a free course on negotiations launched in November. "For you to become a better negotiator, to some extent, you have to become a better person," he said. Here are three common mistakes to avoid when negotiating for a promotion, according to Falcão. Moving too fastThe first thing to know about asking for a promotion is that "you should not have been waiting for the yearly review to [ask for the promotion]," said Falcão.

At some point the hormones would quiet, the fascination would diminish, and I would return to my prior self. How do I reconcile this reality with the ambivalence with which I once approached motherhood? An increasing number of adults say that they are unlikely to become parents, leading to much hand-wringing over declining birthrates. For my generation — and, I’d argue, especially for women in my generation — the decision of whether to have a child has become highly fraught. It’s tied up in an understanding of all that went into making motherhood a choice that we get to make.

Each time, when the West finally accepted Ukraine’s requests, Russia’s most catastrophic threats did not materialize. Although Putin said the attack was “a response from our side” to the Biden administration’s decision on longer-range weapons, Russia has not needed a pretext for such strikes in the past. By providing Ukraine with ATACMS but only allowing it to strike parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia, “we sent Russia the message: ‘You know what? The decision to fire slightly longer-range Western weapons is a difference of degree, not of kind. By law, Russia considers these territories its own, and warned of dire consequences if Ukraine targeted them with Western weaponry.

Silicon Valley, long considered a progressive stronghold, has begun to shift toward Donald Trump, according to new voting data analyzed by Business Insider. These numbers show that Trump and Republicans are still a long way off from gaining any real majorities in Silicon Valley. While Elon Musk is based in Texas these days, many of his companies, including Tesla, are still very active in Silicon Valley. Trump, with Musk in support, has promised to cut regulations, which could help Silicon Valley startups grow more quickly. The trend toward Trump in the Silicon Valley electorate mirrors statewide and national trends.

A judge on Wednesday found New York City in contempt for failing to staunch violence and brutality at its jails, a scathing ruling that puts the troubled Rikers Island jail complex on the verge of a federal takeover. It would not involve a takeover by the Justice Department, nor would the city’s jails become part of the federal Bureau of Prisons. Nineteen people died in custody at Rikers Island in 2022. There has been “no substantial reduction in the risk of harm currently facing those who live and work in the Rikers Island jails,” the judge wrote. Under a plan approved by the city council in 2019, New York City is legally required to shutter Rikers Island and replace it with four smaller and more modern jails by 2027.
