☆ Pompeii: Ancient DNA rewrites the stories of people buried by volcanic eruption

CNN —Ancient DNA has revealed surprises about the identities of some people who perished in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii after a volcanic eruption, overturning misconceptions about their genetic relationships, ancestry and sex. Ash and volcanic rock called pumice then covered Pompeii and its residents, preserving scenes of the victims of the city’s destruction like an eerie time capsule. While the Greeks, Etruscans and Samnites attempted to conquer it, Pompeii became a Roman colony, the study authors noted. In 2015, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii began efforts to restore 86 of the 104 casts originally made by Fiorelli. Together, park scientists and the study authors are working on a larger project to better understand the genetic diversity present in Pompeii during the Roman Empire.

The Los Angeles Lakers will send guard Bronny James to their G-League affiliate beginning Saturday, per ESPN. ☆ Southern California wildfires: 27 million people face ‘life-threatening’ fire warning

The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning until 6 p.m. Thursday – which is used to describe “extreme and life-threatening fire behavior.” The warning is expected to affect 27 million people in Southern California and the greater San Francisco Bay area. More than 14,000 people remain under evacuation orders, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. Kapoor added that fires are part of the “Los Angeles reality” and all professors could do was follow guidance from emergency officials and reassure students. The Mountain Fire in Ventura County, California, has damaged or destroyed several homes, officials said. More than 11,000 Southern California Edison customers across five counties had power shut off Wednesday morning.

Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson described the quarter as a "landmark" for the company, citing record deliveries of 2,781 units as well as cost-cutting measures. The company reaffirmed plans to produce roughly 9,000 vehicles this year, which would mark a 6.8% increase compared to 8,428 units in 2023. Lucid said it had $5.16 billion in total liquidity to end the quarter.

The generation is leading the way when it comes to pet ownership — almost a third of US pet owners are millennials. Across the board, more pet owners are splurging on their animals. In its annual surveys, the American Pet Products Association has found that pet owners have reported spending more on things like treats, food, toys, and clothing each year. While some millennial dog owners are forgoing having children, others are using dogs as training for parenthood. Dog owners can't be blamed entirely for the changing behavior.

Pawtucket, Rhode Island AP —For several decades, the cremated remains of more than two dozen American Civil War veterans languished in storage facilities at a funeral home and cemetery in Seattle. The simple copper and cardboard urns gathering dust on shelves only had the name of each of the 28 soldiers – but nothing linking them to the Civil War. While some remains are hidden away in funeral homes, others were found where they fell in battle or by Civil War re-enactors combing old graveyards. The remains of several more Civil War veterans were sent to Maine, Rhode Island and other places where family connections were found. Bruce Frail and his son Ben – both long active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – were on hand for service.
