Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

Salesforce set a goal for all employees to achieve "Ranger" status on Trailhead, the company's internal training software, in 2023, BI previously reported. Becoming a Trailhead Ranger requires the accrual of 50,000 points on Trailhead, earned by completing various training modules, quizzes, and challenges. In January, Salesforce employees took to a companywide Slack channel named "airing-of-grievances" to bemoan an upcoming deadline for achieving Ranger status. One employee mentioned a "rumor" that staffers who failed to earn Ranger status would have their bonuses withheld. The downsizing comes after a year of aggressive cost-cutting and mass layoffs that had already reduced the company's workforce by 10%.

Generative AI Neural networks are the heart of the increasingly popular type of AI known as generative artificial intelligence , or gen AI for short. Both traditional AI and gen AI systems rely on data and can be used to automate decision-making tasks. Microsoft's AI virtual assistant Copilot — which went live in November — is perhaps the most prominent generative AI feature among our portfolio companies. Bias Bias is another downside to AI systems — and LLMs in particular — that users need to consider. While GPUs have the upper hand in AI training, CPUs are understood to perform AI inference well.

In today's big story, we're looking at Microsoft notching another big win by briefly reaching a $3 trillion valuation. Generative artificial intelligence won't take jobs from retail workers; instead, it will make them better at their jobs, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff told attendees at the National Retail Federation's annual conference in New York last week. Technology stocks had a banner year in 2023, but Deutsche Bank thinks there could be even more upside ahead. Although these gains may seem hard to match, Deutsche Bank analyst Brad Zelnick and his team expect software stocks to outperform in the new year. Salesforce has moved slowly on AI, RBC Capital Markets managing director Rishi Jaluria told Insider — at least that's what the company's partners and customers told him. One said they were encouraging customers to start first with Einstein, the original AI product Salesforce launched in 2016, before adding new generative-AI services to their bills. The question was the first of many moments during the conference when a Salesforce executive brought up trust and safety when talking about generative AI. Despite that, Salesforce continues to invest in other companies via its venture arm, which includes a $500 million Generative AI fund. Jaluria said that with the exception of Microsoft, he doesn't expect software companies to see meaningful revenue gains from generative AI until at least 2025.

Now, with the Club holding set to report earnings, Jim Cramer wants to hear whether its AI endeavors are really on track to boost its financials. "We want to hear that numbers must be raised next year because of the new business that [Salesforce is] getting now" as a result of AI, Jim said Tuesday. It's been a year since OpenAI's ChatGPT went viral and accelerated investment into generative AI applications, which can create human-like text sentences and images in response to user queries. Since then, Salesforce and other software companies have raced to incorporate generative AI capabilities into their existing products or launch new ones all together. Still, the analysts reiterated their buy-equivalent rating on Salesforce stock and a $250-per-share price target.
