A smartphone with a displayed Intel logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. Programmable chips sit between Intel's general purpose chips and chips that are designed for a single task and used in everything from encrypting data to 5G wireless telecommunications equipment. Intel said Sandra Rivera, an Intel veteran, will oversee the new unit, which will keep using Intel's factory to make its chips. Programmable chips are used in defense applications such as fighter jets. The deal follows Intel's earlier moves to sell its memory chip unit to SK Hynix and take public part of its Mobileye self-driving car chip unit.

Hong Kong CNN —Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo says the US government has no evidence that Huawei can produce smartphones with advanced chips “at scale,” as it continues to investigate how the sanctioned Chinese manufacturer made an apparent breakthrough with its latest flagship device. On Tuesday, Raimondo told US lawmakers that she was “upset” by news of the launch of Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro during her visit to China last month. “The only good news, if there is any, is we don’t have any evidence that they can manufacture 7-nanometer [chips] at scale,” she told a US House of Representatives hearing. That surprised many because SMIC, a partially state-owned Chinese company, has also been subject to US export restrictions for years. The following year, the US government expanded on those curbs by seeking to cut Huawei off from chip suppliers that use US technology.

A "recovery narrative" has been playing out in a corner of the semiconductor market this year, according to Morgan Stanley. They benefit from NAND recovery on cash flows, and a "strong competitive position" in high bandwidth memory, said the bank. Meanwhile, the potential for NAND improvement in the U.S. seems "most positive" for Western Digital, which isn't discounting a material recovery in NAND profits, Morgan Stanley said. Improving conditions Morgan Stanley said it's become more optimistic on the memory sector given that pricing and inventory conditions are improving further. Overall, Morgan Stanley expects a shortage building up in the fourth quarter and an upturn in 2024 — before peaking in 2025.

Hong Kong/Seoul CNN —SK Hynix, a South Korean chipmaker, is investigating how two of its memory chips mysteriously ended up inside the Mate 60 Pro, a controversial smartphone launched by Huawei last week. “The significance of the development is that there are restrictions on what SK Hynix can ship to China,” G Dan Hutcheson, vice chair of TechInsights, told CNN. The big question is whether any laws were violated.”A Hynix spokesperson told CNN Friday that it was aware of its chips being used in the Huawei phone and had started investigating the issue. “SK Hynix is strictly abiding by the US government’s export restrictions,” the company said. Industry insiders said it was possible that Huawei had purchased the memory chips from the secondary market and not directly from the manufacturer.

REUTERS/Piroschka van de Wouw/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsAMSTERDAM, Sept 5 (Reuters) - ASML (ASML.AS) will ship the first pilot tool in its next product line this year as planned, the semiconductor equipment maker's CEO Peter Wennink said, despite some supplier hold-ups. Under pressure from the United States, the Dutch government does not grant ASML licences to export EUV tools to Chinese chipmakers. Like in a camera, the High NA, or high numerical aperture tool, will gather light from a wider angle for up to 70% better resolution, although the ASML tool uses a system of mirrors rather than a lens. Separately, Wennink confirmed that ASML will have more sales in dollar terms from its previous generation "DUV" machines than EUV machines in 2023. ASML is forecasting 30% sales growth this year due in part to strong demand from Chinese customers for the older machines.

Analysts at an Asian brokerage and investment group have picked four semiconductor stocks to play the "booming demand" for high-performance chips. "This old semiconductor migration locomotive still has steam in it yet, even amid the current industry downcycle, thanks to booming demand for high-performance chips," CLST analysts Jason Tsang and Cathy Hsu said in a research note dated Aug. 23. Semiconductors are used in products like tablets and smartphones, and the Covid-19 pandemic led to high demand for such goods, resulting in a shortage of some types of chips. Analysts expect it to take market share from fellow chip manufacturer KLA. "In addition to expanding shipment volumes, demand improvement, content growth, and value add should together drive a boom in the semiconductor equipment market," the analysts wrote.

Aug 2 (Reuters) - From consumer goods giant Unilever (ULVR.L) to automaker Nissan (7201.T) and machinery maker Caterpillar (CAT.N), global firms have warned of slowing earnings in China as the world's second-largest economy loses its post-pandemic bounce. A continued rebound has been limited to a handful of sectors such as dining and luxury goods, driving double-digit China sales growth for the likes of Starbucks (SBUX.O) and LVMH (LVMH.PA). Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) cut its full-year sales target last week due to a sales dip in China, its top market. "Unfortunately, our (China) sales outlook is now falling far below our production capacity," Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said last week. July 31 (Reuters) - Memory chipmaker Western Digital Corp (WDC.O) forecast a bigger-than-expected loss in the first quarter and revenue below Wall Street targets on Monday as weak demand, mainly for its cloud business, forces it to cut production. Cloud companies will take another "couple of quarters" to clear out excess inventory, finance chief Wissam Jabre said in June. Western Digital forecast its adjusted loss per share to be in the range of $2.10 to $1.80, compared to an estimated loss of $1.40 per share. It also forecast revenue for the same period below estimates. Rival Seagate Technology (STX.O) also forecast downbeat revenue for its first quarter last week, on weakness in major market China and lower tech spending.

"Demand is recovering very gradually," Woohyun Kim, chief financial officer at SK Hynix, said on an earnings call this week. "The recent improvement in PC shipments has been mainly led by promotions and low-end models, meaning it provided limited impact on chip demand recovery," he said, adding that shipment forecasts for PCs and smartphones this year have been downgraded from earlier predictions. Chipmakers are also increasing production of the high-end chips used to support AI related chips. SK Hynix said demand for AI server memory had more than doubled in the second quarter compared to the first quarter. The company leads the market in high bandwidth memory (HBM) DRAM used in generative AI.

SK Hynix reported its earnings for the second quarter of 2023 on Wednesday. South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix posted a second-quarter operating loss of 2.88 trillion Korean won ($2.24 billion) on Wednesday as demand for memory chips remained sluggish. SK Hynix said the weak memory chip market is on the road to recovery amid robust artificial intelligence demand, which resulted in a smaller second-quarter operating loss. The quarterly losses were narrower than the 3.4 trillion Korean won in the previous quarter which ended in March, and compared to a 4.2 trillion won profit from a year ago. That's compared with expectations for a 2.7 trillion won operating loss, according to Refinitiv estimates, weighted toward analysts that are more consistently accurate.
