How to focus with a short attention span
  + stars: | 2023-01-11 | by ( Sandee Lamotte | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
In her book “Attention Span: A Groundbreaking Way to Restore Balance, Happiness and Productivity,” Mark explains how decades of research have tracked the decline of the ability to focus. “In 2004, we measured the average attention on a screen to be 2½ minutes,” Mark said. “In fact, our research shows it takes 25 minutes, 26 seconds, before we go back to the original working sphere or project,” Mark said. “And then you go back and pick up the original interrupted project,” Mark said. For over 25 minutes, you’re actually working on other things.”(At least I can tell my boss that when I miss my deadline.)

How Ana Botín can defeat the Santander sceptics
  + stars: | 2022-12-21 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Dec 21 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Investors aren’t buying what Ana Botín is selling. That’s striking because analysts expect Santander to earn a respectable 11% return on tangible equity (ROTE) over the next 12 months. One way to express the dissonance between those numbers is to infer the return investors require to hold the bank’s shares. To shed that discount, Botín must prove Santander is the best owner of its component bits. The group generated an annualised return on tangible equity of almost 14% in the first nine months of 2022.

Rather than invaders exploring the land they’ve invaded, the second “Avatar” film is about the encounter of two different indigenous societies. Hyundai and Kia now have dozens of suppliers in Alabama, according to the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, a business group. The agency, they said, hired underage workers while they worked there. “It was my first job in the United States and this is not what you would expect to see here.”Six other former workers told Reuters they, too, saw underage workers at Ajin’s two factories in Cusseta. Herrera said he raised concerns about the underage workers with managers at SMART, but was brushed off. The officials, wearing shirts that bore Hyundai logos, inspected the assembly line even as underage workers labored there, Herrera said.
Bank of Ireland follows AIB in raising interest income guidance
  + stars: | 2022-11-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
DUBLIN, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Bank of Ireland (BIRG.I) on Wednesday followed main rival AIB (AIBG.I) in upgrading its net interest income guidance for 2022, reflecting the faster pace of European Central Bank interest rate increases. Ireland's largest bank by assets said in a trading update that it expects net interest income to increase by around 6% to 7% year-on-year compared to its previous guidance that it would be modestly higher than 2021. AIB, the country's largest mortgage lender, forecast last month that its net interest income would increase by more than 15% compared to the 10% expected previously. AIB is the only Irish bank so far to increase non-tracker mortgage interest rates since the ECB began to hike rates at its fastest pace on record. Bank of Ireland's 3% interest income growth year-to-date was driven by the bank no longer being charged negative rates by the ECB for excess deposits.
The country's fourth-largest bank in terms of total assets reported a net profit of 317 million euros ($319.06 million) for the July-September period. Analysts polled by Reuters expected a net profit of 221 million euros. At a group level, third-quarter net interest income rose 10% from a year earlier to 965 million euros, compared with analysts' forecast of 917 million euros, and it also rose 7.4% against the previous quarter. Against that background, Sabadell revised the bank's net interest income guidance up to a double-digit growth for 2022 from a previous mid-single digit growth forecast on the back of higher interest rates. Total costs fell 30% in the third quarter against the same quarter a year ago though were 1% higher compared to the previous quarter.
Those are comments from one investment advisor despite lenders on the continent posting bumper third-quarter results this week. Barclays on Wednesday reported net profits of £1.5 billion ($1.73 billion), while Deutsche Bank revealed a net income of 1.12 billion euros ($1.11 billion). Deutsche Bank's net interest margin grew to 1.5% in the quarter, up from 1.4% in the prior quarter and from 1.2% in the year-ago period. But this income source for banks is unlikely to be long-lived as European capitals debate imposing a "windfall tax" on banks' profits. Hickmore said that senior debt from European banks is more attractive now as they are immune to many risks banks face.

European banks’ perfect moment will prove fleeting
  + stars: | 2022-10-26 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Oct 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Europe’s big banks are enjoying a perfect moment. That dream scenario allowed Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), Barclays (BARC.L) and Banco Santander (SAN.MC) to report chunky profits in third-quarter results released on Wednesday. Barclays’ revenue from trading fixed-income securities, currencies, and commodities in the first nine months of 2022 was 63% higher year-on-year. Deutsche, Barclays and Santander have slashed their group-wide stock of loan-loss provisions since 2020, and in the latter two cases they’re even below pre-pandemic levels. Deutsche Bank and Barclays were down 0.5% and 0.9% respectively.
A sign hangs above an entrance to a branch of Barclays Plc bank in the City of London, U.K.LONDON — Barclays on Wednesday reported an unexpected rise in third-quarter earnings on the back of strong trading revenues, despite a continued drag from a costly U.S. trading error. "We delivered another quarter of strong returns, and achieved income growth in each of our three businesses, with a 17% increase in Group income to £6.4 billion," Barclays CEO C.S. Common equity tier one capital (CET1) ratio was 13.8%, compared to 15.4% at the end of the third quarter of 2021 and 13.6% in the previous quarter. Group income including the impact from the over-issuance of securities hit £6 billion, up from £5.5 billion for the same period last year. Barclays shares will begin Wednesday's trading session down almost 20% on the year.

The private preschool landscape in New York City is arguably the most competitive in the nation. Education consultants Wendy Levey and Cindy Chanin selected the 12 most prestigious in the city. New York City has arguably one of the most competitive landscapes for private preschools in the nation. Why parents fight for a spot knowing the odds often comes down to reputation — maybe celebrities or well-known business leaders bring their kids there, or, possibly more importantly, the preschool's notorious for landing its graduates spots at the most prestigious private schools in the city. Levey and Chanin selected 12 preschools in Manhattan and Brooklyn that, in their experience, are the most prestigious programs around.
Bank of Cyprus bid makes case for lender buyouts
  + stars: | 2022-09-22 | by ( Liam Proud | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Lone Star’s roughly 700 million euro offer for Bank of Cyprus (BOCH.CY) shows that the sector may have reached such a level in Europe. Chief Executive Panicos Nicolaou churned out a respectable 7.3% return on tangible equity (ROTE) in the first half of 2022, excluding one-off charges. That helps explain why the bank has rebuffed three offers from U.S. fund Lone Star, the last of which valued it at almost 0.4 times tangible equity. Even if Bank of Cyprus hits that lower number, a fair valuation might be closer to 0.8 times tangible equity, or around 1.3 billion euros – double Lone Star’s offer. In making the case for bank buyouts, Lone Star may be doing the whole sector a favour.
Today, we're kicking things off with my colleague Eugene Kim's look at a (secret) new team at Amazon. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is trying to fix the company's crumbling engineering culture. According to leaked documents, Amazon formed the "Amazon Software Builder Experience" group to "focus on improving the experience of software builders across Amazon." Some Amazon engineers have expressed that they're "overwhelmed" by mundane software upgrade work, manual testing and deployment, and hard-to-use developer tools. The Meta CEO announced on Instagram: "Happy to share that Max and August are getting a new baby sister next year!"

There are also factors connected to job happiness that we have little control over, such as your boss. But we don’t usually decide who our boss is, and they can suddenly change (for good or bad). And — in my own, less scientific, more DIY way — here are exercises I’ve been practicing to get into better work happiness shape. And the third lists things you’d like to be able to do in your job that you currently don’t — even if they have nothing to do with what you’re paid to do. Beyond whatever the job itself accomplishes, there is also meaning and purpose with what you do with your wages.
