CNN —A week into Ukraine’s surprise cross-border incursion into Russia, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Moscow does not have the situation under control. The incursion – the first time foreign troops entered Russian territory since World War II – is a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. The first reports of Ukrainian troops crossing into Russia’s Kurs region, just north of the Ukrainian border, started to emerge late last Tuesday. On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee said that the appeal shouldn’t have been allowed, meaning she will have to return her third-place prize. In 2017, the Russian Olympic Committee said that none of the 18 athletes stripped of their medals because of doping violations had returned the physical awards. After Chiles’ bronze bumped Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu off the podium, the country’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said he’d refuse to attend the closing ceremony in protest. “Given these circumstances, we are committed to pursuing an appeal to help Jordan Chiles receive the recognition she deserves,” the U.S. committee said.

And the biggest prize for Russia was the return of Vadim Krasikov, a convicted hitman whose release had been publicly sought by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Anna Chapman, one of 10 Russian sleeper agents deported from the US in a 2010 prisoner swap, was also feted on her return to Russia. Britain blamed the poisoning on Russia; Russia has consistently denied involvement, although Putin referred to Skripal as a “scumbag” and a “traitor,” his contempt suggesting that Skripal had gotten his just desserts. The release of Russians in the swap means that Russia’s political climate is no less repressive.

CNN —An ancient Christian monastery in Gaza has been added to the List of World Heritage in Danger because of the ongoing conflict in the region. Mohammed Abed/AFP/Getty ImagesThe Monastery of St. Hilarion, known locally as Tell Umm Amer, was simultaneously added to the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger, according to an announcement by UNESCO on its website on Friday. “This decision recognizes both the site’s value and the need to protect it from danger,” the organization explained online. The monastery was founded by St. Hilarion and was home to the first monastic community in the Holy Land, according to UNESCO.
