What the Hollywood Writers’ Deal Means

Hollywood writers reached a deal to end their strikeThe Writers Guild of America, which represents more than 11,000 screenwriters, could begin finalizing a deal on a new contract with entertainment companies as soon as tomorrow. The 146-day strike all but ended after the two sides reached a tentative deal on Sunday night. SAG-AFTRA and the studios have not spoken in more than two months, and no talks are scheduled. But the prospective writers’ deal should provide a blueprint for the actors, since many of their demands are similar. The tentative deal came after several senior company leaders joined the talks directly — among them Robert Iger, Disney’s chief executive; Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-chief executive; and David Zaslav, who runs Warner Bros.

Rival media companies Warner Bros Discovery (WBD.O) and Paramount Global (PARA.O) gained 2.3% and 2%, respectively. Companies like Charter say rising distribution fees are forcing cable companies to increase prices, causing consumers to leave. In the new graphic novel “Roaming,” Dani and Zoe, best friends from a suburb of Toronto, meet up in Manhattan over spring break. Before long, they’re savoring their first slice of New York pizza (“huge, like a place mat!”) and getting hassled for cash by a creepy Times Square busker dressed as Elmo. Jillian and Mariko Tamaki, the cousins who wrote and illustrated the book, drew from their own memories of traveling for the first time to New York City. Mariko, 47, who grew up in Toronto, recalled being spooked by the subways, among other things. Jillian, who was raised in Calgary, remembered how electric the air felt in Times Square, and how the light was like nothing she’d ever seen.

An American Airlines plane takes off from the Miami International Airport on May 02, 2023 in Miami, Florida. American Airlines pilots approved a sweetened labor deal, making the carrier the second major U.S. airline to seal a new contract with its highest-paid work group. An earlier deal between American and the union fell apart after rival United Airlines and that carrier's union reached a richer, preliminary deal. American's pilots voted more than 72% in favor of the new contract, and there was a 95% turnout, according to the Allied Pilots Association. Delta Air Lines pilots ratified a new agreement earlier this year.

The judicial overhaul and the uncertainty, disruption and risks that come with it, are forcing him to shift Tipalti’s money and talent overseas, he says. The company keeps all its funds outside Israel, apart from three months’ payroll as required by its bank, he says. At the same time, money going into Israel’s 7,000 startups is plunging, says Ari Strasberg, SNC’s Vice President of Strategy. According to SNC, tech startups raised $15.5 billion in 2022, the equivalent to just under 3% of the country’s GDP. Protesters still hope the government will reverse course, or that its judicial overhaul bills will be struck down by the Supreme Court.

In “The Slip,” Prudence Peiffer’s tenderly researched group biography, six visual artists in different seasons of life and seeking different aesthetic ideals met Barr’s challenge with an unlikely spirit of concert. Beside him is his art school friend Jack Youngerman, painter of shaggy color fields in organic, almost floral forms. Grown bored in postwar Paris, the Jersey boy and the Kentuckian relocated to the abandoned sail-making lofts of Coenties Slip, an old manufacturing block in the toe of Manhattan. From 1956 to around 1964, an artist colony and some truly epochal art took shape there. That scene has long fascinated critics but never been the subject of a researched narrative history until now.

American Airlines pilots' union said Thursday that they agreed to a sweetened offer for a new labor contract, less than two weeks after a richer deal at rival United Airlines derailed voting at American. "We appreciate the Allied Pilots Association for its collaborative work to reach an updated agreement on a four-year contract for American's pilots," American said in a statement. American's pilots would start voting on the new deal in August. The deal is the latest in the transportation industry where workers are seeking, and getting, higher wages. A shortage of pilots has emboldened unions to seek bigger raises and other improvements after the pandemic stalled negotiations.

The Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents over 15,000 American Airlines pilots, did not specify the value of the revised deal. The American Airlines revised deal also provides pilots full back pay for this year. In line with United's deal, pay increases for American Airlines' pilots will now take place on January 1 instead of May 2 as provided in the original deal. An American Airlines spokesperson described the revised deal as a contract that its pilots deserve. Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) is now the only major U.S. carrier that is without a new pilot contract deal.

New York CNN —American Airlines (AAL) agreed to raise its pilot contract offer by more than a billion dollars to bring it on par with the tentative agreement competitor United Airlines reached with its pilots last week. The total offer reaches about $9 billion dollars in incremental compensation and benefits, CEO Robert Isom said in a call with pilots Friday. Isom said the United agreement “changed the landscape” and had wages that were higher than Delta’s original negotiations. Last week, United Airlines pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, reached a deal in principle with the airline, giving the pilots up to a 40% raise. Last week, APA President Ed Sicher said in a statement it is “dead obvious” their union’s existing tentative agreement is “woefully deficient by comparison” to the tentative agreement reached by its competitor airline’s pilots.

The new offer includes 21% pay bonuses and pay on par with United and Delta, the Allied Pilots Association, their union, said Friday.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, from American Airlines company, taking off from Barcelona airport, in Barcelona on 24th February 2023. American Airlines on Thursday raised its earnings outlook for 2023 after a strong start to the peak travel season, the latest airline to reap the rewards from the continued boom in demand. That updated 2023 profit guidance falls in line with Wall Street expectations of $3.10, according to Refinitiv consensus estimates. For the third quarter, American expects to earn an adjusted 85 cents to 95 cents per share, in line with estimates. CHICAGO, July 20 (Reuters) - A rush among travelers to make up for lost time during the pandemic is producing bumper airline earnings. United Airlines (UAL.O) and Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) have also raised their earnings estimates as consumers cut spending on goods in favor of experiences. "It's indicative of our belief that the economy is strong, demand is strong," American CEO Robert Isom said on an earnings call. Strong demand has bolstered airfares, allowing carriers to offset higher costs. They point to frequent upgrades to airline earnings forecasts as an evidence of strong travel spending.

"The strike is not something we wanted," said Sarandos, whose company is negotiating jointly with competing movie studios like Disney and Paramount whose parent companies also own streaming services. Some big-media companies that own streaming services, like Paramount and Disney, have seen their shares drop even in the renewed bull market of the past year. LightShed Partners analyst Rich Greenfield says Netflix made $6.5 billion last year excluding interest, taxes, and non-cash charges, while rival streaming services at Paramount, Disney and NBC lost more than $8 billion. That's a relatively small number for an industry with revenues topping $70 billion, $31.6 billion of it last year at Netflix. Paramount Global's Paramount+ service lost $1.8 billion last year, but saw losses shrink in the first quarter.

July 20 (Reuters) - Shares of American Airlines (AAL.O) fell on Thursday as its outlook for the second half of the year disappointed investors even as the company lifted its full-year profit forecast and posted higher-than-expected quarterly earnings. American forecast adjusted profit of $3.00 to $3.75 per share for 2023 compared with its prior outlook of $2.50 to $3.50 per share. But some analysts said the outlook suggested a slowdown in the company's earnings in the second half compared with the first six months of the year. American's revenue forecast also suggested airline ticket prices for domestic travel have peaked, fueling worries about the company's ability to offset cost pressure. Adjusted earnings for the second quarter came in at $1.92 per share, above analysts' consensus earnings estimate of $1.59, according to a Refinitiv survey.

Netflix’s focus on streaming has also helped it dodge some of the other problems bedeviling its peers, including weaker-than-expected box office results for expensive blockbusters. (That was also evident in China, which some in Hollywood had hoped could make up for underperformance at home.) While the company will save on content spending in 2023, it will have to pay for American productions at some point. “This strike is not an outcome that we wanted,” Ted Sarandos, the company’s co-C.E.O., told analysts yesterday. Leland also takes on questions about being blind that many of us might never ask, or might not know whom to ask. Do blind guys want to know if the woman they’re speaking to is pretty? He made the decision after a blind woman told him that he should learn now, rather than when his sight was gone for good, an experience that for many can be an emotional tornado. The writing process, he said, kept him going despite his declining vision and accompanying worries about the future. But given the fact that he was writing about blindness, “losing vision almost felt productive.

How Manga Was Translated for America

Since manga was first introduced to the U.S. in the 1980s, American companies have wrestled with how to adapt the genre for their readers. The history of manga translation in the U.S. has been one of fits and starts, as publishers grappled with questions about how to present it to fans outside of Japan. Striking the right balance is tricky, said Frederik L. Schodt, one of the early translators of manga and the author of “Manga! : The World of Japanese Comics,” a groundbreaking work in the field of manga studies. “Readers in English should be able to enjoy the story without thinking about it being a translation,” he said.
