Founders of women's health startups feel doubly invested in this election, one of the closest presidential races of the century. They said another Trump victory creates uncertainty for reproductive health startups, from period trackers to online abortion clinics to embryo banks. For startup Julie, the legal status of emergency contraception is the "million dollar question of this election," said Amanda E/J Morrison. Trump's waffling on reproductive rights has put founders of women's health startups on notice. For some founders of women's health startups, this election is more than a political contest; it has ramifications for their livelihoods.

The Biden administration is proposing a rule that would provide women with private insurance access to over-the-counter birth control pills and other contraceptives at no cost, the White House said on Monday. “This rule, once finalized, will expand contraception coverage for 52 million women of reproductive age with private health insurance,” White House Gender Policy Council Director Jennifer Klein said during a briefing. “For the first time ever, women would be able to obtain over-the-counter contraception without a prescription at no additional cost, and health plans would have to cover even more prescribed contraceptives without cost sharing,” she said. Perrigo Co.’s Opill is currently the only daily birth control pill approved for sale without a prescription by the Food and Drug Administration, but the proposed rule covers other forms of over-the-counter contraceptives, including emergency contraception such as morning after pill Plan B, spermicides, birth control sponges, and condoms. The rule will also require that health plans cover all FDA-approved contraceptive drugs and some devices, including IUDs, without cost sharing in many cases.

CNBC spoke to Foster about the economics of abortion access and the financial impacts of the end of Roe v. Wade. Diana Greene Foster: One good thing about The Turnaway Study is that our demographics closely resemble national demographics on who gets abortions. [They're also] more likely to have evictions, have a larger amount of debt if they're denied an abortion. The number of public records, such as bankruptcies, evictions and court judgements, significantly increased for those denied abortions, by 81%. So, it isn't the case that everyone who wants an abortion is now carrying a pregnancy to term.

Harris looks to ‘paint a picture’ for undecided votersSuburban moderates are far from the only group Harris’ campaign is targeting in the race’s closing days. As the Harris campaign tries to make inroads with men, podcasts like Joe Rogan’s are still under consideration, a source familiar with the matter said. “No matter your party, no matter who you voted for last time, there is a place for you in this campaign,” Harris said last week. She appealed to moderate voters and women in their 2024 primary — including many of the same voters Harris’ campaign is targeting in the race’s late stages. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris (L) holds a moderated conversation with Former US Rep. Liz Cheney, Republican of Wyoming, at People's Light performing arts theater Malvern, Pennsylvania, on October 21, 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney participated in a series of moderated conversations on Monday across the "Blue Wall" battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Harris campaign is courting disaffected Republicans, who may be on the fence about voting for Trump. The campaign kicked off a "Republicans for Harris" group in August and has since amplified the voices of a small, but growing, number of prominent Republicans who have come out in support of the Democratic vice president. According to Cheney, patriotic Republicans have "a duty and obligation to do what we know is right for the country."

With voters citing the economy and inflation, abortion, immigration and democracy as top issues in this election, the survey tested a series of policy proposals on those topics, offering clues about which policies could move voters. The survey did not identify which party or candidate is associated with the proposal. While economic policies could move voters toward a candidate, the survey also finds that election denialism could turn them off. Voters across swing groups, including suburban women, independents, moderates and seniors, say they are less likely to support a candidate who denies the election results. The NBC News poll of 1,000 registered voters, 898 of whom were reached by cellphone, was conducted Oct. 4-8.

But now, as Trump lines up against DeSantis in a battle over a high-profile ballot initiative to legalize marijuana in Florida, the governor’s old ally, Jeff Roe, is working against him. The relationship, however, soured after DeSantis’ presidential ambitions went up in flames. In June, a Fox News survey found that 66% of Florida voters were for marijuana legalization while just 32% were against it — and that came before Trump said he would support the marijuana initiative. He said a Harris administration "will build on existing programs, increasing federal spending to make health care more affordable for people." Still, Socal said a Trump administration wouldn't have much flexibility to dismantle or scale back the law without change from Congress. The IRA extended enhanced subsidies that made ACA health plans more affordable for millions of households through 2025 — a provision Harris plans to make permanent if elected, her campaign said. A Democratic House or Senate would likely block any of Trump's sweeping changes to Medicaid, according to Altman. The crowd heckled and howled at each of the segments, which ended with a Fox News town hall in which Trump took questions from women. "It does get more unbelievable,” one could be heard saying. Former President Donald Trump declared he was "the father of IVF" during a Fox News town hall that aired Wednesday, while also saying he just recently discovered what the decades-old procedure actually is. When told he was getting a question on in-vitro fertilization, Trump said, "Oh, I want to talk about IVF. "And I said, explain IVF, very IVF, very quickly. Harris told reporters on Wednesday that Trump's "father of IVF" claim was "quite bizarre." What does it really mean to live in a country where abortion is no longer a constitutional right? New laws have forced doctors to delay care in life-threatening situations and made women afraid to seek it, leading to preventable deaths. Or, in the cases of some doctors: How can I help this patient without getting arrested? We asked people at the front lines of abortion access to help us understand how the new laws have filtered into their worlds. They answered our call with texts, audio messages, videos and pictures; some shared their stories anonymously out of fear of reprisal.

Part of the shift is demographic: Over the past few decades, the number of single women in America has skyrocketed. White women are a huge voting bloc, and since 2000, the GOP presidential ticket has won a majority of them. In Galvanize Action’s June poll, when President Joe Biden was still the presumptive Democratic nominee, he and Trump were in a dead heat among white women. “What we hear from [moderate white women] is, even if I would never choose to have an abortion, this is a freedom that women that I love deserve and should be protected,” Payne said. The real swing votersTo the extent that traditional swing voters are persuadable in this election, Sosnik argued they might be people like political independents or Nikki Haley Republicans. But there’s a second group of swing voters Sosnik argued is even more important. For Trump, these are non-college-educated White voters in general, particularly men, who “if they vote, you know they’re going to vote for Trump,” he said.
