As an Anglican clergy member, I have prayed for political leaders as a regular feature of my life. Each Sunday, at the church I attend with my family, we have a moment set aside to remember those who have political power. I have prayed publicly for George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Prayers at political conventions feel different. Mixed in with the cascade of praise for the candidate, prayers at these events can take on the feel of a religious veneer for certain policies.

The Secret Service denied some of former President Donald Trump's requests for additional security resources over the past two years, an official with the agency confirmed to NBC News. The Secret Service official said extra security accommodations could not always be made for Trump due to the department's limited resources. "In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News. Last Sunday, he said the assertion that the Secret Service had rebuffed Trump's team's requests for additional security were "absolutely false." In the wake of the attempted assassination of Trump, the Secret Service has been under intense scrutiny.

California gets 54 electoral votes (it has two senators and 52 congressional districts). The winner is the candidate who gets 270 or more electoral votes. If no candidate gets to 270 electoral votes, the House of Representatives picks the winner from among the candidates who got electoral votes. The campaigns will focus more attention on the fewer than one-third of all electoral votes they consider to be up for grabs or winnable by either party. Two states, Maine and Nebraska, apportion some of their electoral votes by congressional district rather than giving all of them to the state winner.

On a website dedicated to Project 2025, the Biden campaign describes the plan as a "blueprint for Trump." However, several former Trump officials have been directly affiliated with Project 2025 and Trump praised the Heritage Foundation in April 2022 in a recently resurfaced video. The soaring number of unlawful entries at the southern border was always going be a central part of the 2024 presidential campaign. On the campaign trail, former President Donald J. Trump has been showcasing a chart showing a rising mountain of migrant encounters at the border under President Biden. Greg Abbott of Texas got big cheers for his vow to continue busing migrants to liberal cities. But amid the heightened rhetoric, the reality on the ground has recently changed. There were 83,000 apprehensions of migrants last month, according to official data, down significantly from 117,000 in May.

One after another, for four days, the testimonies for Donald J. Trump poured out. “God spared his life,” Franklin Graham, the evangelist, proclaimed. “Divine intervention” saved his father from the assassin’s bullet, Eric Trump said. Ben Carson, the former secretary of housing and urban development, said that when he saw his friend “escape death by mere inches” his thoughts “immediately turned to the book of Isaiah, which says, ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper.’”And Mr. Trump himself said at the Republican National Convention, “I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”As many in the audience nodded and cried in the darkness, the message was unmistakable. Even as his speech was criticized by many for its divisive tone and length, for these believers, Mr. Trump appears supernaturally anointed, an embodiment of God’s blessing.

This year’s Republican National Convention was Donald Trump’s third as the party’s nominee, but it was the first that felt like a full expression of a G.O.P. Speakers even made efforts to reach out to unions, Black voters and immigrants — imagining a big-tent Republican Party that could be far more formidable at the ballot box. But if the Democrats were running a strong candidate right now, no Democrat would look at that convention with fear. [You can listen to this episode of “The Ezra Klein Show” on the NYT Audio App, Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.] In this conversation, moderated by the show’s senior editor, Claire Gordon, we dissect the themes and undercurrents of the convention and what they might signal about a Republican Party in the midst of change.

Trump has long been known for the brash, even vulgar way he sometimes speaks about women. “President Trump championed my journey, empowering me to be who I became today,” Habba said. “The media’s negative portrayal of President Trump and his treatment of women is entirely false,” Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary, said in a statement. “Every attack on President Trump only strengthens our movement,” said Habba, who represented Trump in the Carroll defamation suit. “Sham indictments and baseless allegations will not deter us, because the only crime President Trump has committed is loving America.”

If Biden were to look for inspiration on how to overcome the naysayers, he could find it in Trump. When Democrats win those states, they can win the White House. The six days that carried Donald Trump from the stage in Butler, Pa., to the rostrum at the Republican National Convention seemed at times like the buildup to a moment of total political domination, an apotheosis for the Republican nominee and confusion and defeat for his opponents. The image of Trump rising, alive and fighting and undaunted, under the red, white and blue. The cohesive and enthusiastic Republican convention that followed, complete with the anointing of a youthful vice president and heir apparent, all in contrast to the spectacle of a Democratic Party trying desperately to jettison its senescent standard-bearer. The promises of a conciliatory and unifying acceptance speech, finally delivering the “presidential” Trump that Republicans have strained to see these last eight years. For the first nearly 20 minutes of the speech, as Trump walked the audience through the experience of surviving an assassin’s bullet, the apotheosis seemed to be on track.

Little mention of Biden (by name)Trump said Thursday night that he would use Biden’s name only once. Thursday night, CNN reported that many senior-ranking White House and campaign officials now privately believe that Biden must abandon his campaign for a second term – and soon. The crowds inside the hall in downtown Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention this week reflected the mood of the party: unified, abundant, exhilarated. If the state of the opposition could be summed up by the demonstrations outside the arena, it was quite the opposite: disjointed, sparse, gloomy. Protests through the week in Milwaukee have appeared far smaller and less energetic than those at past national conventions. At the last in-person Republican convention, in 2016, a coalition of protesters rallied in Cleveland for days, angry over the nomination of former President Donald J. Trump. That week was marked by scuffles, standoffs with police and the burning of an American flag outside the convention hall.
