Rhiannon Giddens Is a Songwriter, Too
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Jon Pareles | More About Jon Pareles | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Giddens amassed the songs on “You’re the One” over more than a decade, channeling and mixing favorite styles, mingling homages and hybrids. Its oldest song is “Hen in the Foxhouse,” a cheerful yet pointedly feminist funky blues — with a scat-singing bridge — that she wrote 14 years ago. “In terms of my own songwriting lineage, my lyricist lineage, it’s a through line: Stephen Sondheim, Tom Lehrer, Tin Pan Alley. “She wanted this new album to be brighter and lighter and open and colorful,” Jack Splash said in a phone interview, and she wanted all of her musical influences to come into play. It has a large room where a band of a dozen musicians — merging Giddens’s folky regulars with Jack Splash’s R&B experts — could record together live.

“We’re going to have more rhythm; we’re going to have more confidence.”Joy has been in short supply the last two weeks. The U.S. team came into the World Cup as the favorite to win it, but it is far from living up to its potential. In many ways, it has been the worst showing of the United States ever at this tournament. In this edition of the World Cup, the United States has looked anything but invincible. The teams have met six times at the World Cup, and in every edition since 2007.

Being a regular cast member for four years has given him financial security and made him a star in his native Nigeria, where the show is wildly popular. But Mr. Akinfemi and 10 of his castmates were told this year that the only way the half-hour show was going to get a fifth season was if budgets were cut. How the actors were paid was going to change. Instead, Mr. Akinfemi and his castmates would be reclassified as recurring cast members. “It was a bit surprising, for all of 10 seconds,” Mr. Akinfemi said in an interview before SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, went on strike.

The cost to make a flat white, one of the most popular Australian coffee orders, jumped by nearly one-fifth. The result is smaller profits, a shrinking pool of regular customers and business owners heading for the exit. Before COVID-19, hospitality venues were about one-third of Australian small businesses advertised for sale. It paused in July but warned it may resume hiking if inflation, still running at 7%, fails to slow. "Some of my regulars I used to have will still come and get coffee and say, 'We had to bring lunch.

Joe Biden visited South Carolina on Thursday to tout his economic plan. Biden wants South Carolina to lead off the 2024 primary race, but implementing his plan has been anything but easy. Biden aimed to be the first Democrat since George McGovern to cast sweeping changes to how the Democratic Party elects a president. New Hampshire, the state that prides itself on picking presidents through its first-in-the-nation primary, would be tied for second. In their place, South Carolina would jump from its first-in-the-south primary to leading off the entire calendar.

But the die-hards worry Germany’s political leadership less than people like Ina Radzheit. An insurance agent in a flowered blouse, she squeezed in among platters of schnitzel and frothy beers for her first visit to the AfD, the German initials by which the party is known. She is exasperated by government squabbling over climate plans she fears will cost citizens like her their modest but comfortable way of life. “I can’t say now if I would ever vote for the AfD,” she said. “But I am listening.”As anxieties over Germany’s future rise, so too, it seems, does the AfD.

When I went to my next shift at Olive Garden, I decided to give away free dessertIt was pretty easy to do. There were instances where managers would give away free desserts or bottles of wine to unsatisfied guests so it felt normal. I never told anyone I was giving away free desserts, and no one ever figured it out. It's pretty basic: look good, feel good. Editor's note: Olive Garden had not responded to a request for comment as of time of publication.

In Oakland, Calif., in 1968, Huey P. Newton, the Black Panther leader, was convicted of killing a white police officer. In 1971, after two more trials and nearly two years in prison, he was cleared of all charges. That’s the question at the heart of “This Land Was Made,” the gutsy but murky new play by Tori Sampson at the Vineyard Theater. Most successful is the sitcom element, which could be titled “Trish’s,” an Oakland bar where everybody knows your name. For about 25 minutes, Sampson serves up something warm and piquant at Trish’s: an interplay of zingers, flirtations, spats and politics.

Amanda Claypool got a part-time job at Waffle House for $2.92 an hour. I worked at Waffle House for almost 3 monthsI actually liked working at Waffle House. Either way, Waffle House is only legally required to make sure I earn $7.25 per hour. I used the cash tips I earned from Waffle House — around $500 — to make a payment on my credit card. Even if Waffle House wanted to offer higher wages, I'm not sure they'd be able to raise their menu prices to compensate for it.
How a Maitre d’ at Balthazar Spends His Sundays

Zouheir Louhaichy, the head maître d’ at Balthazar, the perennially popular SoHo brasserie, doesn’t give just any customer his cell number. Those who have it, though, are not shy about reaching out on Sundays, his day off. “I’ll get texts from regulars who are either desperate to get in on short notice or need help with future requests,” he said. Between returning regulars’ texts on Sundays, he trains for triathlons. I love Hawaiian coffee because the beans are sort of a connection to Hawaii, which I love.
CNN —Living la dolce vita in Italy isn’t just about snatching a cheap dwelling in a charming rural village. Making pizza in Italy and satisfying Italian palates is not the simplest of missions. Only one other place to eat is open year-round – a restaurant serving regional dishes but no pizza. Marco MolinariPaying homage to her Germanic origins she makes pizza with sauerkraut, sausages and veal shin, with tomato salad, pizza kebabs, pizza with goat cheese and pizza with salmon – the latter being the most wanted by clients. Summer movie preview 2023

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.
Jamie Lorriman/Pool via REUTERSLONDON, May 4 (Reuters) - Prince William and his wife Kate took a trip by Tube to a London pub on Thursday and told locals that preparations are still being nailed down for his father King Charles III's coronation, the most significant royal event in a generation. King Charles will be crowned at Westminster Abbey on Saturday in a grand ceremony dating back some 1,000 years. "I hope all goes well, fingers crossed," said William, who pulled a pint of "Kingmaker" beer himself inside the 19th Century hostelry. Asked about the upcoming celebrations, Kate, who sipped a pint of beer as she chatted to the guests, said: “It’s going to be a busy time. On Saturday, William, the heir, and Kate will follow King Charles' golden coach in a carriage procession through central London.

Amanda Claypool started working at Waffle House once a week to try and understand the labor shortage. She enjoys working at Waffle House, but says she's glad it isn't the source of her livelihood. When I'm not at Waffle House I'm a freelance writer and strategy consultant. After searching for a couple months, Waffle House gave me a chance, and I started working there once a week. The money isn't much, but what's shocked me the most about serving at Waffle House isn't the pay — it's the cost of employment itself.
Line Dancing Toward Euphoria

On the night of April 17, a crowd of 20- and 30-somethings, many of them queer, packed into Georgia Room, a Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired nightclub at the Freehand Hotel in Manhattan. They were there to drink and dance, but they hadn’t paid $25 each to grind or freestyle. More than 300 people — some in cowboy boots and 10-gallon hats and biceps-exposing denim vests — turned out for the sold-out event. The evening’s draw was Stud Country, a queer line-dancing and two-step class and party that usually takes place in Los Angeles. There, the event draws regulars and curious newcomers every Monday and Thursday to Club Bahia, a Latin joint in Echo Park.

April 14 (Reuters) - The National Basketball Association fined the Dallas Mavericks $750,000 on Friday for resting multiple players during a game last week that had draft implications and while they were not mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. The NBA said Dallas violated the player resting policy and demonstrated through actions and public statements a desire to lose the contest in order to improve their chances of keeping their first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. "The Dallas Mavericks' decision to restrict key players from fully participating in an elimination game last Friday against Chicago undermined the integrity of our sport," NBA Executive Vice President Joe Dumars said in a news release. A lottery to determine the final order for the June 22 draft will be held on May 16. Reporting by Frank Pingue in Toronto Editing by Toby DavisOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

He’s frequently struggled to serve his customers, yet he’s penalized them for mentioning the competition. Musk moved fast and broke nearly everything — the speed and totality with which he’s ruined the site has been almost impressive. More than that, Twitter under Musk appears to have lost the thing that made it impossible to quit: Its centrality. At its cultural peak, from about 2015 to perhaps 2020, what people talked about on Twitter seemed to set the agenda for discussions elsewhere. And now, when something’s going down, Twitter rarely feels like the place where everyone is gathering to watch.
Now, a Tennessee law restricting drag in front of minors is due to come into force on April 1. Several planned drag events were canceled over the winter after protests, and many venues felt forced to make previously family-friendly drag shows into adults-only events. Drag performers and venue owners say they are worried about their livelihoods and their rights of free expression. The Starbucks say there is no such thing as family-friendly drag; drag performers cite Bugs Bunny, Shakespeare's cross-dressing comedies and the Robin Williams film "Mrs. Doubtfire" among counterexamples. Outside of public Pride events, most Tennessee drag performers largely work in clubs and bars that admit only those over 18.
March 14 (Reuters) - Bruised U.S. bank stocks regained some ground on Tuesday, as a sell-off sparked by Silicon Valley Bank's collapse gave way to bargain-hunting by investors hopeful that efforts to shore up confidence would avert a wider financial crisis. The S&P 500 regional banks index (.SPLRCBNKS) rebounded 1.4%, leaving it with a 26% loss over the past five sessions. Investors worry about the health of smaller banks, the prospect of tighter regulation and authorities' preference for protecting depositors before shareholders. "I wanted to feed him and then I saw all the other cats here. "I look for stray cats to make sure they have food. I even know where they live," said Veronika, wearing a woolly hat decorated with a cat's nose and whiskers. After her cat got lost during the attack on her building, Veronika comes every day and feeds stray cats in the same place.
