US stocks traded mixed as investors looked ahead to the central bank's meeting minutes. Traders are anticipating a quarter-point rate cut in November. Monetary policy is in focus after an unexpectedly hot job report in September, fueling doubt over whether the Fed will issue another jumbo rate cut this year. "The tone of the Fed minutes should not change expectations of further rate cuts—the Fed is still scrambling to catch up with inflation slowing in the US, and started cutting rates late. AdvertisementAccording to Pantheon Macroeconomics, the Fed is more likely to begin cutting rates in 25-basis-point increments rather than issuing another 50-basis-point rate cut.

To lower costs, 1 in 3 homeowners are willing to hire a contractor with holes in their resume. About 33% of surveyed homeowners say they'd consider hiring a contractor with a questionable reputation to save money, according to a new report by Clever Real Estate, a housing data site. Generally, homeowners say reputation is the most important factor when hiring a contractor (25%), followed by experience (23%), cost (19%), personal recommendations (13%), availability (11%) and estimated project timeline (10%). As homeowners juggle insurance claims and recovery efforts from back-to-back storm aftermaths, one thing to keep in mind is who to hire as a contractor. Ask for reviews and references "The first thing you want to do is check [the contractor's] reputation," said Hicks.

New York CNN —Shari Redstone, the chair of CBS parent company Paramount Global, said Wednesday that CBS leadership made a “bad mistake” with their handling of “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil’s contentious interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates. In stark opposition to what CBS editorial leadership told staff on Monday, Redstone said she did not think Dokoupil had violated the network’s editorial standards when he grilled Coates over the content of his new book. I think he handled himself and showed the world and modeled what civil discourse is. On Wednesday, Redstone said the network’s executives made a “bad mistake” in how they handled the ensuing controversy over the interview. Several correspondents and producers had expressed concern with Dokoupil’s conduct in numerous instances, beyond the Coates interview.

But Pennsylvania stands apart as the state that top strategists for both Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump have circled as the likeliest to tip the election. There are struggling industrial towns where Mr. Trump needs to maximize his vote, and smaller cities booming with Latino immigrants where Ms. Harris aims to make gains. Mr. Trump won the county in 2016 by 19 percentage points, only four years after Mr. Obama carried it narrowly. One X factor is the regional impact of the assassination attempt on Mr. Trump in Butler County. “You guys don’t know what the hell it is,” Mr. Trump said of the tax break.

Harris advisers often publicly dismiss the polls, acknowledging that the race is close and will remain so leading up to Election Day. Others want to focus on mobilizing men and men of color to turn out – a demographic that remains a point of concern among Harris campaign officials. And I am running like the underdog because I am the underdog in this race,” Harris told donors at a fundraiser in late September. “When Black voters are getting inundated by anti-Harris mail, anti-Harris ads, the face-to-face conversations matter even more,” the operative said. Harris campaign surrogates have told CNN that there is also still a lot to do to shore up support among Latinos in the final weeks before Election Day.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a “Latter-Day Saints for Trump” coalition less than a month before Election Day, as the campaign looks to shore up support among a key voting bloc in which defections could be particularly damaging in key western battlegrounds. “President Trump has consistently stood by our side in defending both, ensuring that Latter-day Saints and people of all faiths can worship freely and live according to our beliefs,” Lee said. Latter-day Saints voters’ steadfast support for GOP candidates has long helped keep Utah and Idaho — the states with the largest share of LDS voters — impenetrably red on election nights. The former president plans to hold a roundtable with Latter-day Saints leaders on Sunday in Arizona, according to a campaign aide. The Harris campaign hosts a “Latter Day Saints for Harris-Walz coalition on its website and launched an advisory committee in Arizona last month.

Viewers tuning into NFL and college football games in recent weeks have been bombarded with two Trump ads — running nationally and locally in swing states — that take issue with Vice President Kamala Harris’ past support for taxpayer-funded gender-affirming treatments. “So we’ll talk about it for them.”The Harris campaign declined to comment on the record. The two trans ads are Trump’s two most-seen commercials during professional and college football games, according to AdImpact, a firm that tracks political commercials and ad spending. Trump campaign officials say the ads will make it harder for Harris to make up ground with men, where polls show her trailing Trump. A Trump campaign official said the campaign's internal polling showed the ad was resonating with Black men — a demographic the campaign is courting.

BOSTON — Luis Tiant, the charismatic Cuban with a horseshoe mustache and mesmerizing windup who pitched the Red Sox to the brink of a World Series championship and himself to the doorstep of the Hall of Fame, has died. Major League Baseball announced his death in a post on X on Tuesday, and the Red Sox confirmed that he died at his home in Maine. He had 187 complete games and 47 shutouts in a 19-year career spent mostly with Cleveland and Boston. His death comes one week after that of all-time baseball hits leader Pete Rose, whose Cincinnati Reds faced Tiant’s Red Sox in the 1975 World Series — still considered one of the greatest in baseball history. After his retirement, Tiant was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame but never made the national shrine in Cooperstown, New York, receiving a high of 30.9% of the votes in 1988, his first year on the ballot.

On Nov. 5, the Decision Desk will project 610 races across all 50 states, from the presidential election to statewide and congressional contests. Early on election night, the Decision Desk uses exit poll data to determine whether it can project uncompetitive races. When a party has gained a majority of 218 seats in the House, the Decision Desk will project control for that party. Other sources for election vote data include state and county vote computer feeds and websites, when they are available. Exit poll results are independently analyzed in real time, and NBC News calls all races as soon as the Decision Desk is fully confident in the winner.
