(AP) — As the United States injects hundreds of billions of dollars into clean energy through its signature climate law, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, criticism is growing louder about where, how and whether new development should be allowed. MIT is offering a first-of-its-kind course that trains students to be mediators in conflicts over clean energy projects. Students get academic credit and hands-on experience addressing real-world dilemmas, while the community and developer get free help resolving conflict. In one recent Friday afternoon class, students debated everything from environmental justice concerns to misinformation to oil companies. He hopes to create a similar national consortium of universities serving communities and projects in their respective regions regarding clean energy.

Striking United Auto Workers (UAW) members from the General Motors Lansing Delta Plant picket in Delta Township, Michigan U.S. September 29, 2023. Dana said the UAW strikes affected some of its largest light truck programs, including Ford Super Duty, Ranger and Bronco as well as Stellantis' Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator. "The longer the UAW strike continues, the greater financial stress there will be across the Tier 2 through Tier 4 supply base," Dana's chief executive James Kamsickas said in a post-earnings call with analysts. Dana expects its full-year sales to be $10.7 billion if UAW strikes through Oct. 31, or $10.2 billion with strikes through Dec. 31. GM and Ford have pulled their full-year forecasts this week to account for impacts from the UAW strikes.

Oct 26 (Reuters) - Ford (F.N) autoworkers were set to head back to work after the United Auto Workers (UAW) union reached a tentative labor deal with the company late Wednesday. Ford was the first of Detroit's Big Three car manufacturers to negotiate a settlement to strikes joined by 45,000 workers since mid-September. The UAW will now turn its attention to talks with General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW told Ford workers now on strike to return to their jobs during the ratification process. That means production of Ford Super Duty pickups, Ford Bronco and Explorer SUVs and Ranger trucks could restart this week.

October 25 - PHILADELPHIA -- The Arizona Diamondbacks won nine games during a six-week span from early July through mid-August. On Tuesday night, the Diamondbacks won their ninth game of October -- and became one of the most unlikely World Series teams of all-time. The Diamondbacks, who overcame two-games-to-none and three-games-to-two deficits in the NLCS, will visit the American League champion Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night. The Phillies, with five players on $100 million deals on their roster, fell one win shy of their second straight NL pennant. The Phillies scored 15 runs in the final five games.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trea Turner had the moment that could have pushed the Phillies toward the World Series waiting for him. Harper, though, lined a 2-1 fastball to center to end the scoring threat, the inning — and Philadelphia's last, best chance to return to the World Series. The Diamondbacks used a walk-off Game 3 single and a tying two-run homer late in a Game 4 win that wiped out an 0-2 NLCS hole. Castellanos struck out — one of 11 in the NLCS — and, after a walk to Brandon Marsh, Thomson let the light-hitting Rojas take his cuts. The Phillies have not won a World Series since 2008.

The story of how that happened, as described by several administration officials, is more complex than a caricature circulating in Washington that Mr. Biden is cautious to a fault, and says no until the pressure is insurmountable. In this case, there was plenty of pressure. In July, Mr. Biden’s aides said, they came to see what one called a “clear use case” for ATACMS. It was the one Mr. Crow had identified, using the ATACMS to target supply lines and air bases that Ukraine could not reach. At a July 14 meeting in the office of Jake Sullivan, the president’s national security adviser, he and Jon Finer, his primary deputy, talked with a small group of officials about developing options.

UAW expands strike, hitting Ford’s largest factory

CNN —The United Auto Workers union surprised Ford with a major escalation of its strike, ordering workers off the job at the company’s largest plant. “We have been crystal clear, and we have waited long enough, but Ford has not gotten the message,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. He said that the union wanted a different offer from Ford from what it had presented before. The UAW has been on strike against not only Ford, but also General Motors and Stellantis, since September 15. By hitting the Kentucky Truck Plant, the union is going after a much more profitable part of Ford’s line-up.

DETROIT – Ford Motor's third-quarter U.S. new vehicle sales increased 7.7% compared with a year earlier, led by higher sales of traditional pickup trucks across its lineup. The Detroit automaker on Wednesday reported a 15.3% increase in truck sales compared with a 5.1% decline in cars and sales of SUVs that were essentially flat. The automaker's sales of electric vehicles were up by 14.8% during the quarter to nearly 21,000 units. Ford hybrid sales, led by the F-150 and Maverick hybrid trucks, posted third-quarter sales of 34,861 vehicles – up 41.4% over a year earlier. UAW President Shawn Fain has transformed the rituals of contract talks with General Motors(GM.N), Ford(F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) into a high-stakes, made-for-media game. GM and Ford said Monday they were indefinitely laying off another 500 workers at four Midwestern plants, citing the impact of the walkouts. Analysts looking ahead to third-quarter financial results this month are starting to reckon the costs of what the UAW calls "Stand up strikes." Wildfires: Stay Safe in a Warming World

Climate change is warming up the spring, lengthening the summer, and drying out soil and vegetation, leading to more frequent, destructive wildfires. If you’re traveling in this environment — especially if you’re planning a trip to the outdoors — how can you stay safe? Heat, drought, low humidity and wind can signal fire danger, so the National Weather Service checks for these conditions year-round and issues red-flag warnings for places that are at high risk. No matter the season, watch for those warnings. What are the conditions?’” That will help you gauge the risk level, and know what to monitor.
