LONDON — The U.K.'s new Labour government on Wednesday outlined a raft of proposed legislation, including the nationalization of rail operators and the creation of a publicly-owned clean power company. In a speech delivered by King Charles III on behalf of the administration, the government said it is "committed to a clean energy transition that will lower bills for consumers over time," adding that it would establish Great British Energy, headquartered in Scotland, to help accelerate investment in renewable energy such as offshore wind. The speech listed a broad range of proposals, many of which have already been announced. A pledge of economic growth was yet again front and center in the speech, described in the opening lines as a "fundamental mission" which would help the country move on from the cost of living crisis.

The forthcoming visit to Australia will be the 75-year-old British monarch’s first trip to a Commonwealth realm since he ascended the throne. In addition to the United Kingdom, Charles is also head of state in 14 realms including Australia, New Zealand and Canada, though his role is largely ceremonial. “Their majesties’ state visit to Samoa will celebrate the strong bilateral relationship between the Pacific Island nation and the UK,” the palace added. CNN —A museum in Australia has come clean: The Picasso paintings hanging in its women’s restroom were forged by one of its own curators. The Ladies Lounge first made headlines in 2020 as a female-only space displaying what were presented as original Picassos once owned by Kaechele’s great-grandmother. Enclosed in green silk curtains, the Ladies Room was opened for female visitors in 2020. I liked that a misogynist would dominate the walls of the Ladies Lounge. CNN —Two lion brothers, including one with an amputated leg, were spotted making a record-breaking night swim through treacherous waters in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park. Researchers believe that the nearly mile-long (1.6-kilometer) crossing of the crocodile-infested Kazinga Channel is the longest documented swim by lions. They were likely in search of females after losing dangerous fights to another group of male lions — and to avoid humans while doing so, according to the researchers. But for "House of the Dragon" to fully commit to its devastating dragon war, fought between a woman with a rightful claim to the throne and her usurper younger half-brother, Rhaenys needed to die. Ollie Upton/HBOBut despite her acquiescence, the wrong of denying Rhaenys the throne hangs like a pall over "House of the Dragon," and Rhaenyra especially.
