A state judge in Florida has given former President Donald J. Trump a legal victory, refusing to toss a libel lawsuit filed by Mr. Trump over a statement made by the board of the Pulitzer Prizes on coverage of the 2016 Trump campaign’s connections to Russia. The ruling on Saturday by Robert Pegg, a senior judge on a circuit court in Florida, means that Mr. Trump’s case will proceed, opening the door to a discovery phase that may allow Mr. Trump’s lawyers to question Pulitzer officials, who issue the most prestigious prizes in journalism. After the prize was awarded, a special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, investigating the Russian interference allegations, said he could find no evidence that Mr. Trump or his aides had coordinated with the interference effort. Mr. Trump and others who disputed the reporting had urged the Pulitzer Prize Board to revoke the award, but in its 2022 statement, the Pulitzer Prize board said two independent reviews had found nothing to discredit the articles. The reviews found that “no passages or headlines, contentions or assertions in any of the winning submissions were discredited by facts that emerged subsequent to the conferral of the prizes,” the board said in the statement.

CNN —Like its titular tornados, “Twisters” blasts through a lot in its 122-minute runtime. Generally, scientists are the least certain about the connection between tornadoes and climate change as it’s unclear how warming temperatures are changing storms themselves or the outbreaks. Cathy, a local farmer, gripes that storms and floods are becoming more frequent, and the price of wheat more expensive, while stopping short of citing climate change. However, for a film populated by scientists and clued-in citizens to not mention climate change is a little like the twisters themselves: there’s a hole at the center. !”“Making a ‘Twisters’ movie in Tornado Alley during storm season, tornado season, it’s kind of perfect.

Driving for Uber and Lyft has helped bring in some money, but not enough to offset expenses. "What I can tell you is I barely work," Sharp said. "In May I worked two days, in April I worked four days, in March I worked two days, in February I worked two days, in January I worked one day." "I'm not embarrassed about that, but when I’m willing to work — and bust my ass — why is it that I can’t get a living wage?" Ironically, fast-food jobs are now quite difficult to obtain, Sharp said, not least because their hourly wages are higher than in many other industries thanks to California's new $20 minimum wage for workers in the sector.

The lawsuit, filed by Stephanie Armour, alleges that she was fraudulently targeted for dismissal starting in April 2024 despite excelling in her job. CNN —Steve Fishman was still in his teens when he came face-to-face with a serial killer. But as Fishman would learn later, the man harbored a dark secret: His name was Robert Frederick Carr III, and he was a serial killer who preyed on young hitchhikers. Although her father died in a Florida prison in 2007, Donna continues to struggle with her family’s dark past. In an exclusive interview with CNN, Donna tearfully described an adolescence filled with bullying and jokes about having a serial killer dad. “And that’s when I started to withdraw.”Serial killer Robert Carr’s daughter, Donna, in an undated photo he'd kept with him in prison.

Soma Golden Behr, a longtime senior editor at The New York Times who was a centrifuge of story ideas — they flew out of her in all directions — and whose journalistic passions were poverty, race and class, which led to reporting that won Pulitzer Prizes, died on Sunday in Manhattan. She was 84. Her death, in the palliative care unit of Mount Sinai Hospital, came after breast cancer had spread to other organs, her husband, William A. Behr, said. Ms. Golden Behr, whose economics degree from Radcliffe led to a lifetime interest in issues around inequality, was instrumental in overseeing several major series for The Times that examined class and racial divides. Each enlisted squads of reporters and photographers for intensive, sometimes yearlong assignments.

Second Stage Theater, one of the four nonprofit organizations with Broadway houses, on Thursday named a new artistic director as the sector braces for a wave of leadership turnover. Founded in 1979 and distinguished by its commitment to presenting work by living American writers, Second Stage said that its board had chosen Evan Cabnet as its next artistic director. Cabnet is currently the artistic director of LCT3, Lincoln Center Theater’s program for emerging writers, directors and designers. Second Stage owns Broadway’s smallest house, the 600-seat Hayes Theater. The organization currently has 47 staffers and an annual budget of $27 million; this season it is planning to stage two Broadway shows, two Off Broadway shows and a Next Stage Festival for early-career work.

CNN —Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” a diss track of fellow rapper Drake, has already been declared the “song of the summer” by some listeners who have been playing it on repeat. The song was released as part of a recent rap battle between Lamar and Drake that saw the two hip-hop artists releasing diss tracks at a frantic pace in April. He was joined on stage by multiple West Coast stars, including legendary rapper/producer Dr. Dre and Los Angeles Clippers player Russell Westbrook. Lamar held the show at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum. As of Thursday morning, Drake had not yet responded on social media or with new music.

CNN —Two Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists at The Washington Post went on the record late Wednesday, calling for leadership change at the storied newspaper as questions swirl over the integrity of its new publisher and chief executive, Will Lewis. “Will Lewis needs to step down for the good of The Post and the public,” Higham replied in a comment on Maraniss’ post. “He has lost the newsroom and will never win it back.”Spokespersons for Bezos and The Post did not immediately comment. Inside The Post’s newsroom, morale has plunged as staffers express alarm over Lewis’ conduct and worries over the future direction of the newspaper under his leadership. “Bezos must recruit an accomplished, experienced editor whom journalists admire and trust.”

New York CNN —Jeff Bezos has a decision to make — and it is one that will determine the future course of one of the nation’s most prestigious news organizations. Or he can side with his Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, which is repudiating their new leader in clear and unmistakable terms. And The Post reported Sunday that a “thief” who used deceptive tactics to obtain private material had ties with Winnett. The stories landed like a one-two punch in The Post newsroom, raising even more alarm and upping the panic level at the newspaper to new heights. When Bezos first appointed Lewis, staffers at The Post understood that he needed to appoint a publisher and chief executive who would shake things up in the newsroom.

When The Washington Post staff gathered in the newsroom in early May to celebrate winning three Pulitzer Prizes, one person was conspicuously absent: Will Lewis, the company’s publisher and chief executive. That’s because Mr. Lewis was in New York meeting with Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon and owner of The Post, who was in the city to attend the Met Gala, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. The pair had been discussing a reorganization aimed at helping The Post turn around its business. That included creating a “third newsroom” inside The Post to focus on new editorial products, an idea blessed by Mr. Bezos, according to one of those people and another familiar with the talks. Mr. Lewis’s decision this month to go ahead with that plan has shaken The Post.

Slow-moving lawsuits intended to drain newsrooms of their limited financial resources and editorial bandwidth. Threats of jail time for journalists who expose political corruption and refuse to give up their sources and turn over their notes. If you think these things sound outlandish in America, take a close look at what’s happening here in Mississippi. Breaching the confidentiality of sources violates one of the most sacred trusts — and breaks one of the most vital tools — in investigative journalism. Even if we were to prevail in our defense of this suit, we will probably have lost in many other ways.

Sales at its stores open at least a year increased 3.8% in the quarter from the same time last year. Which means that Americans are still spending, but selectively, and that “value shopping” means different things to different people. “A sizable segment of them are focused on value, however, that doesn’t directly correlate to a low price. Ron Edmonds, a photographer for The Associated Press who won a Pulitzer Prize for a dramatic series of pictures of the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan and the takedown of the gunman outside a Washington hotel in 1981, died on Friday in Falls Church, Va. His wife, Grace Feliciano Edmonds, said he died in a hospital from pneumonia linked to a bacterial infection. It was only Mr. Edmonds’s second day on the White House beat when he was assigned to cover a speech by President Reagan to an A.F.L.-C.I.O. group at the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981. After rushing to leave the hotel ahead of the president, Mr. Edmonds positioned himself on the other side of the presidential limousine, expecting that Reagan would do little more than wave to onlookers before returning to the White House.

On the day of the eclipse back in April, walking through Boston Commons on a fine spring afternoon as every expectant face turned upward, I thought again of Annie Dillard’s wondrously dislocating essay “Total Eclipse,” which I have reread more times than I can count. “My hands were silver,” she wrote. “All the distant hills’ grasses were finespun metal that the wind laid down.”Then I read “This Is How a Robin Drinks: Essays on Urban Nature,” the forthcoming book by the Nashville naturalist Joanna Brichetto, which begins with an epigraph from “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,” the book that won Ms. Dillard a Pulitzer Prize when she was 29 years old: “Some unwonted, taught pride diverts us from our original intent, which is to explore the neighborhood, view the landscape, to discover at least where it is that we have been so startlingly set down, if we can’t learn why.”And then, as if I were a dullard the universe can’t trust to take a hint, the writer Jennifer Justice mentioned in her wonderful Substack newsletter that 2024 is the 50th anniversary of the publication of “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,” a book that changed me when I was 18 as thoroughly as the eclipse changed Annie Dillard. On the same day, if you can believe it, the novelist Barbara Kingsolver singled out “Tinker Creek” in an Earth Day recollection for The Washington Post: “Her writing helped me see nature not as a collection of things to know or possess, but a world of conjoined lives, holy and complete, with or without me.”

The photo and footage of the so-called “tank man” became the defining image of the Tiananmen Square crackdown whose 35th anniversary passed on Tuesday. People hold candles at a vigil in Hong Kong to mark the Tiananmen Square anniversary on June 4, 2017. Jeff Widener/AP“I’m biking towards the Beijing Hotel and there’s just debris and charred buses on the ground,” he said. Everyone's life is different — yet most people still utter one of four common phrases on their deathbeds, according to Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee. Each of the phrases offers an important lessons for leading a fulfilling and successful life, Mukherjee said during a commencement speech at the University of Pennsylvania last week. The phrases are:I want to tell you that I love you. You're living in a world where love and forgiveness have become meaningless, outdated platitudes ... Just make sure you actually mean words like "love" and "forgiveness" when you use them, said Mukherjee.

Former President Donald J. Trump can proceed with a lawsuit against Mary L. Trump, his estranged niece, over her role as a source for a New York Times investigation into Mr. Trump’s finances, a New York State appeals court said on Thursday. The ruling, from the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court, was a victory for Mr. Trump, though it did not address the substance of his claim: that his niece should be held liable for breaching a confidentiality agreement when she provided financial documents to a team of Times journalists. Those documents became the basis of a series of news articles examining what The Times called Mr. Trump’s history of tax avoidance and “outright fraud.” The series received a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting in 2019. Mr. Trump sued The Times in 2021 over the articles, accusing the news organization of improperly inducing his niece to provide the documents. Last year, a New York judge dismissed Mr. Trump’s claims against The Times and its journalists; the judge also ordered the former president to pay the newspaper’s legal fees.

In a letter to BuzzFeed’s board, a copy of which Ramaswamy posted online, the MAGA hardliner and former Republican presidential candidate recommended laying off large swaths of the company’s existing staff. He encouraged BuzzFeed’s board to transform the outlet into a creator-driven platform, suggesting it hire personalities akin to fellow radicals Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson. “Address your audience directly and candidly admit: We failed in our obligation to tell you the truth,” Ramaswamy encouraged BuzzFeed. But it was apparent that he does not view the right-wing entrepreneur’s ideas for the future of BuzzFeed as compelling. “I’m very skeptical it makes business sense to turn BuzzFeed into a creator platform for inflammatory political pundits.

Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy announced last week he had been buying up shares in BuzzFeed. Which led to the obvious question: Why is Vivek Ramaswamy buying up shares in BuzzFeed? Related storiesHe's laid it out in a letter to BuzzFeed's board, but if you're in a hurry I can summarize it for you: Ramaswamy wants BuzzFeed to pull an Elon Musk. Another option would be for Ramaswamy to play this out a while longer and watch BuzzFeed shares shoot up based on his saber-rattling. BuzzFeed shares closed at $3 today, up 20% from May 22, when Ramaswamy first disclosed his stake.
